Duds: Middle of the field Defense. Goodson sucks and unless the Packers figure out how defend that area of the field, teams are going to take more and more advantage of it, Denver did and then moved away from it. Broncos first 2 scoring drives, they absolutely attacked the middle and we had no answers.

I know many of you are fine with what we have at ILB, but just think how much better this defense would be with someone who can actually tackle and cover playing next to Martinez.

Go out and get a guy Gute!

That type of ILB is really really difficult to find though

That's you Patrick Willis, Kuechly, etc type

I would have liked to see if we could have given Clay a shot at that, if he could learn to cover some more

While I acknowledge that, at this point almost anyone would be better than what we have. At times it literally looked like Martinez was trying to cover tackle to tackle. I know everyone is waiting for Burks to come back and maybe he is the answer, but maybe he is not.

I put the D in both categories. Yes, they kept us in it with turnovers when necessary. But that run D has to get fixed. And tackling is horrible at times. That wide open middle reminds me of DC old scheme. That’s not good. This unit gives me hope though for sure.

Duds: Offense (no production) let’s face it, two of those scores were basically gimmes due to a short field.
Return game is non existent.
Rodgers isn’t taking over the game like he’s capable.

Studs: Jones, Williams, Adams, Scott

Studs:
Williams - Took his opportunity and made the most of it.

Smiths - This defense would be nothing close to what it is currently without these two studs. Terrific signings by Gute.

Savage - nice int and some solid tackling.

Duds:
MLF - Taking notes from MM but somehow even worse. Gameplan seemed to involve minimizing Adams and Jones, the two best playmakers on offense. Seriously, 10 targets for MVS, 5 for Adams. 14 touches for Williams, 11 for Jones. Somehow, Keenan Allen gets 10+ targets every game but MLF can't do the same for Adams.

Kevin King - Just a bad day in coverage. He's been lucky that he's faced three awful quarterbacks. Maybe he'll be lucky this week and the Eagles entire receiving corp will still be hurt?

Receivers not named Davante Adams. They're young and will get better but the growing pains are painful.

TEs - It's not their fault MLF insists on playing them so much when they obviously don't deserve it; and Gute didn't help by making these the only options (that Graham contract looking as bad as ppl said it was when he signed it).

No one is fine with what they had today. They have three guys who can all come back from injury and fill that role a lot more capably than Goodson. That's why some don't see the logic in trading for someone.

When is Burks coming back? Green can't come back for quite some time, who is the 3rd guy?

I know you have a lot of confidence in Burks, but I don't. Today solidified my feeling that this Defense is great, with the exception of the Will ILB. I don't care who is being asked to play it right now, today it was absolutely atrocious, even made Martinez look bad on a number of plays. Better offenses are going to absolutely attack the middle of our defense and probably shred it like Flacco and the Denver RB's were early in the game

Who do you sign? That isn't my expertise, but I would start looking at Mason Foster, Josh Bynes or Brandon Marshall. If none of those 3 are better than Goodson, then you go find someone in a trade.

Relying on Burks to fix this is just stupid IMO, even if he does come back, who do you have backing him up if he gets hurt or isn't the answer?

This defense is really close to greatness, time to bring it even closer.

Campbell.

I know you were just answering who the 3rd guy was, but another injured guy we are going to rely on? Campbell is on PUP and didn't practice all Preseason.

Another bad hopeful band-aid in my opinion. I understand rotating a safety into that position on obvious passing downs, but if nobody noticed, the Broncos were shredding that area on 1st down, 2nd and short, etc. I had hoped that Goodson would be the answer, but he has totally looked lost out there.

So unless the Packers are going to continue to play with only one true ILB, Martinez, on every down, I just don't see this getting fixed with the current roster, unless Burks does come back, stays healthy AND actually plays much better than he did last year.

Duds: Middle of the field Defense. ...
been saying that for a month. it's a combo of things. green getting hurt sure didn't help. daniels release. burks is out and is just a guy imo as goodson probably is too. adams out. rookie DT's. other than clark, martinez, and amos, the middle is pretty bare. wentz is going to concentrate on that area too.

Studs: Inarguably the best players on the packers after 3 games in order overall but not for the game (JK Scott, Kenny Clark, Zadarius Smith, Jaire Alexander, Darnell Savage, Preston Smith, Blake Martinez, Adrian Amos) and Jamal Williams
Duds- Aaron Rodgers (missed some routine throws), Aaron Jones (got caught up, was not seeing the field), Bahktari (for the first time ever, he could not contain anyone), Kevin King

The other guy would be Campbell. I don't know when Burks can come back but I would guess sooner rather than later since they didn't IR or PUP him and he was a limited practice participant.

I do not blame you for any aspect of your thought process regarding that spot. It's a problem.

What I am saying is that by the time we are close to the deadline and teams are ready to sell, they will have internal options available.

There is no one to sign right now. Not anyone that can help in that role. At least not that I'm aware of. Such players are coveted. This time of year, the guys out of work are pluggers, not runners.

And as I said, I find it unlikely that a team will be ready to deal away a good cover linebacker until we're closer to the deadline and they admit defeat on the season.

So I think they are going to have to patch it up, get Burks back, and see what he does. If it's week 8, he's been back for 2-3 weeks, and he can't handle it, by all means acquire someone.

Who to acquire? Hard to say because they could look at linebackers and safeties for this role.

Some names that come to mind:

-Karl Joseph, S, Raiders
-Lavonte David, LB, Bucs
-Keanu Neal, S, Falcons
-Jabrill Peppers, S, Giants

You may as well give one to The Raiders as well. I know Minnesota is feeling pretty good, especially after last week.

On another note:

Major dud: Bear fans. I'm looking at their forums right now and they are saying how The Packers aren't a strong team and have benefited with calls, and have faced bad teams. Now, ignore the fact that Minnesota is now 2-1, but one of those "bad teams" was Chicago. So basically what they're saying is that their team is bad. These guys are a riot. XD

I considered that, but I didn't expect the Raiders to win anyway so ... it is what it is there.

As to other fans assessment of King, well I don't think of him as a dud, just a 50/50 player.

For example, last week he gave up a bad play on that Diggs TD, but then redeemed himself with the INT. I'd keep him around as long as his good playa equal or slightly outweigh the bad.

I really would like to see King snap out of it and just all of a sudden "get it" but I am afraid that he has that HaHa stank on him. Is there an exorcist in the house? Voodoo doctor? It's harder to get rid of than a cockroach. Go to the light #20!
