Wait a second, is that an old pic? Isn't that Clay Matthews on the bottom right? They are wearing home jerseys at Lambeau. Okay, ya got me!

Sure we do but do you really not wanting him to throw it deep at all? They didn't do it much last night and it was actually fairly effective a few time. You said you didn't watch the game so maybe you thought they did it a ton. They did not.

One time it was clear Rodgers thought they got a guy to jump so he took a shot. Problem was he was wrong and the guy got back onside.

You make a fair point, I may have been misled by the highlights BUT he has done it for a while now and I get tired of it. The hail mary pass relies on the ability of the receiver as much as the passer, if was always successful I`d be fine with it but I also believe that teams expect it of him.....I respect your opinion honestly but my heart can`t take much more.....

Oh I forgot ...

Studs:
M. Trubisky for not exploiting this ...

1) that's last year.

2) if he passes, that gets picked. Watch it in live motion, the gap isn't as big as it looks there.

While the game was very sloppy I'd give Amos, Davis, Pettine, the Smiths and Graham a solid grade but I'd say our only stud was Scott.

Duds: The oline for shoddy pass protection, our non-existant run game and Tramon Williams for his penalties (his push out on that potential TD was awesome tho, credit to Tramon for staying in football shape all these years).

As many have said, we need to figure out if our defense is this good, or were the Bears just that bad last night. Overall, big W in the Bears house on the celebration of their centennial season. Had to laugh about that! The team has a lot of things to build on, I expect they improve with their run and pass blocking and that Jones starts to find more holes to run through against non-elite competition.

Stud for us: Nagy's play selection

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/09/06/matt-nagy-three-points-is-ridiculous/
Mitch Trubisky threw the ball 45 times and was sacked on five additional drop backs. Throw in a pair of scrambles as well and the Bears intended to pass on 52 separate offensive plays Thursday night compared to just 13 total runs, which amounts to an exact 4-to-1 disparity from a play-calling perspective. While the runs the Bears did try weren’t exactly effective, the game was always within reach to where Chicago could remain far less one-dimensional.

I never understood why they didn't keep running against us. They have several really good RBs and the game was never out of reach. Both teams should have been trying harder to wear down the opposing defense by running at them. The Bears had even more reason to try, even if we were being stingy. Therefore I'll take my hat off to Nagy for helping us win. Our stud

MVS made the biggest offensive play of the entire game...
While true, something was off in those Rodgers-MVS short throws. A couple bounced at his feet, then there was that bizarre throw behind him in the flat in the second half that went for a few yards loss. I didn't see where MVS was running where you wouldn't expect nor a closing route jumper with a "put it where they ain't" throw.

It was never acknowleged how poorly Rodgers threw short touch passes, screens and checkdowns, in his early years, gradually improving to pretty decent. It could be a relapse with rust. It could be some lack of precision in the route. It will bear watching.

Totally understand. I would say I want defenses to expect him to throw deep so it opens up short and medium range passes.

Last night I actually liked the mix Rodgers just missed a couple, the oline struggled and we couldn't run the ball

Amos, Savage, and Greene are such a big improvement over last year's safety group. Unreal. Savage can really jump routes, okay tackler so far. Amos and Greene are very good tacklers.

Fwiw, I took some flack for saying Greene would play over Josh Jones, took some flack for saying he'd play over Ty Summers...well, Jones is gone, and Summers didn't play a single defensive snap. Greene is #good.

Kevin King played a good game as well, btw. Our secondary is pretty capable.

I got that impression also. Despite the dropped INT by King I got a feeling I haven't had in a while that they were very close on more than a couple. It could have had a lot to do with Trubisky but with experience they will come.

These are two instances, were Rodgers “could” have avoided a sack ... - granted on both occassions The pocket is collapsing rapidly, however, there was time to unload in both instances ...

I know Rodgers isn’t used to “**** and dunk”, but still ...

Rodgers is very intelligent, so in my oppinion adapting shouldn’t be that much of an issue ... - and if Rodgers and The first stringers have had more time on The field during The preseason, this might not have been an issue ...

He could have, but it's 3rd and 6 and throw a quick pass for -2 yards? What are the odds a TE beats that fast defense for 8 yards?

One thing on that play, I remember ha Ha coming and getting put back like 4 yards by williams LOL. Though the defense crushed everyone else on ourline that play

For sure their offense made mistakes. But those penalties to 1st and 40 wherr for holding. Which thwy had to do because a OL was being overwhelmed by the Packer pass rush.

Actually in that sequence I think the penalties were for holding, hands to the face, and offensive pass interference, but that does not negate the point of your post.

Exactly. Two third down plays where you have to throw the ball beyond the 1st down marker. Not the two best examples of the bunch to say the least.

Dont really see it in the first one. He already being contacted by the defender. He is making that pass. Maybe he had a split second before it but he easily could have been on a different read. The second one who could have thrown. Not sure it would have resulted in even a positive gain

Just my general thoughts on the game:
  • I fully expected that the offense would struggle and figured on this needing to be a defensive victory, if it was to be a victory at all. However, I didn't imagine how true that would be in both cases.
  • The offense found rhythm when they played with tempo. I would love to see more of that.
  • I will stand by my preseason prediction that this season will stand or fall based on how long it takes the offense to find its way.
  • Trevor Davis came up big last night. I realize he had 8 opportunities to return punts and only came up with one yard, but Chicago has great ST units. He protected the football, which is job one. In a game like that, a turnover or muffed punt would have been the difference in a win or a loss. Additionally, he came in the game cold, went down and made a good catch on a bad ball, and got us out of the shadow of our end-zone.
  • Raven Greene was a solid contributor last night. Circumstances have thrust him into a big role, but the sophomore UDFA rose to the challenge. He essentially was the Packers' 2nd off-ball linebacker.
  • J.K. Scott was a massive success. In that sort of game, you really can say that he was the MVP. After all, the only reason the Bears even got 3 points was field position.
  • The offensive line play, especially of the two guards, was sub-par. I would not be surprised to see Jenkins on the field sooner rather than later.
  • It was good to see all three tight ends make positive contributions.

If there is one week of the NFL season that tends to be an outlier, it's week one. Week two tends to be the great equalizer of week one narratives. After week one, teams have tape and can start to assess how to better match their game plans with their execution, as well as how to attack opposing defenses.

This doesn't mean that the Green Bay stop unit is a mirage. There are solid reasons to believe that they are much improved (their names are Preston, Za'Darius, Darnell, Adrian, among others). And their performance last night was not fluky-- the run defense was stout, the coverage was sticky, and the pressure was consistent. But teams will adjust, and it will be up to Pettine to continue to coach up his unit and keep the expectations high.

Hopefully they welcome in Minnesota only to give them a Viking Funeral.

Listen, Rodgers taking sacks is also a product of him not throwing INTs. When the coverage is solid and the big uglies are closing in, my order of preference is:

1) Throw the ball out of bounds
2) Take a sack
3) Throw an INT

Some forget that by the time you think about Option #1, a DL could have his arm in the air about to strip-sack you. Sometimes taking the sack is the safest, yet frustrating best option.

Both King and Savage were incredibly close to getting INTs. Wow. Great play all around by both players. Jaire and Amos are studs.

Too bad Amos can’t get INTs...

But @dantes, PFF told me that Billy Turner was our 2nd best OL last night!

Yeah, those jagweeds also commented that "The Packers were just lucky they faced off against an offense that was abysmal."

So they watched the Packers defense last night and what did they see? Luck! A bunch of luck! Lol.

The longer PFF is around and commenting on football, the less I care what they have to say. A lot of their content is straight trash.

Holding the ball might be looking for the big play at times. But you also have to consider risk aversion in limiting turnovers. We saw that in spades last season--lots of throwaways, only two picks on over 650 pass snaps, young receivers where trust is not solidified.

When you play with a defense that can't carry a half or hold a lead, while not generating many turnovers themselves, risk aversion should be expected. Rodgers' Pettine shove reminded me of one of those Elaine "get out" Jerry shoves ;) followed by, "It's been a long time since I've seen a [defensive] performance like that." It's like he's been waiting for years to see a defense that could bail him out. If the defense can build on this, show consistent high performance against better offensive competition, Rodgers might be willing to take more risks, getting the ball out faster into tighter separation.

As for the LaFleur philosophy, it's not some ****-and-dunk ball control affair. There's a heavy dose of play action/go downfield in that mix, slow developing "hold the ball" plays. Gotta run the ball better to get that working.

Very much agreed HRE. Not being able to run the ball hindered a lot of how that offense works. Hopefully they get it fixed.

I won't care that much if that's the only pick the guy gets all season. Amos is the kind of "glue" player a defense needs in the middle of the field. Refined instincts. He can play high or low. He backstops mistakes. This was the guy who backstopped Eddie Jackson's route jumping. It should be evident why his nickname in Chicago was "Smash" the way he stood that RB up in the hole on short yardage early in the game. It's kind of amusing to see Cohen step out of bounds instead of making a cutback move when he saw him coming.

He was #1 on my list of FA possibilities. So far, so good.

That play where Clark went low on Patterson, and Amos came in a split second after going high was absolutely gorgeous. Haven't seen that in a while.
