I'm concerned about this too. I feel like they may have waited too long to move on from Capers, and are now trying to hire in what could be a rocky situation. One of the attractive things about Green Bay is that they're not very trigger happy when it comes to firing coaches. It's a fairly stable environment, but that advantage seems to be nullified right now.

Word is Fangio would like to be a head coach. When he was asked about a head coaching job, he made some sort of bitter comment about how offensive minded coaches usually get those jobs.

I hope they don't handle this
If I am a potential candidate for the Packers DC job, I would be a bit nervous to take the job for a few reasons. One, Mike McCarthy. His contract is up next year and if he isn't resigned, it might be a one and done year for a DC. Two, Ted Thompson. Same lame duck status as well as a guy who seems to have a penchant to draft with an eye on potential and not necessarily for what a DC or OC might be clamouring for. That last part is strictly a guess on my part, maybe TT consults fully with his coaches on their needs, but it seems like some of the guys he has drafted in the past, don't fit into what Capers is doing.
Unless the Packers go in the tank next year, I would say the only way McCarthy doesn't get renewed is if he doesn't want it. Now that Capers has been fired, I don't see any way that the defense can be any worse lol. Making the scary assumption that Rodgers stays healthy, I would expect the offense to be pretty good next year. Therefore, I think any confident prospective defensive coordinator would see the Packers as a pretty good opportunity.

The timing here is tricky. Ted's contract runs out after the 2019 draft. If he retires at that point, does he extend McCarthy's contract, or does he let the next GM choose his own coach?

I'm optimistic about the offense next year, but there have been stretches in the past few years when the offense has been anemic, even with Rodgers healthy. If the offense doesn't perform well, does Ted defer to the next GM, who might have his own ideas about a head coach?

Anything is possible, but I'm looking at it from the perspective of a potential D coordinator. If you are confident that you can improve the defense of a team with a high powered offense, you should believe that you can create your own job security and that of the others around you.

Chances are good that TT will extend MM this offseason since MMs contract runs out at the end of next season. They will not want to go into next year with a lame duck coach whether TT retires after the 2019 draft or not.

Hire the new DC from within? Really?

The part that scares me about that is " McCarthy should have plenty of options." Seriously? What other options from within a crappy defense is there? Next man up is most likely going to just continue where Capers left off. This is would be a very disappointing way, IMO, to try and improve the defense.

That article is from 2014, it says Ted will run the team through the 2018 season. And I've heard that he stays until the draft is over (in 2019).
Yes it's from 2014..its when he was extended.. I have no reason not to trust this article

Many options..

In house, college, other teams coaches..

Tunnel vision isn't a good thing sometimes

It says Ted runs the team through the 2018 season. Which ends in 2019.
I've heard that he doesn't leave until after the 2019 draft - I guess that's what you're disputing?

Most GM contracts extend until after the draft. It wouldn't be right to ask a new GM to take over the draft. It puts your team at a disadvantage.

My impression was as soon as the last game of 2018 is done, he is done

If Whitt is promoted to DC, I am catching the first bus out of town, of course I would need to first be able to find a bus station, then actually know how to recognize what a bus is and if I am lucky enough, I figure out how to catch that damn bus! Oh hell....I will end up just walking.

I hope you are agreeing with me and saying that hiring within.....would be using tunnel vision? I really don't consider hiring within a great option, simply because I have not noticed one position that I would call well coached.

So MM is considering hiring the Whitt....interesting. The guy who is responsible for the position group that is constantly confused, terrible at tackling, soft and has stone hands could be in charge of the entire D? I don't want anyone in house on that defensive staff next year.
