Offense:
  • Stud-- Davante Adams: Obviously. He could not be stopped.
  • Dud-- Alex Light: Also could not be stopped... just not in the way you'd hope.
Defense:
  • Stud-- Adrian Amos: While not perfect in coverage, he made some big plays against Ertz and that play to prevent Wentz from picking up a first on the ground really sticks in my mind.
  • Dud-- Will Redmond: As long as he is on the field, he's a liability.
Special Teams:
  • Stud-- Mason Crosby: Way to lower the shoulder and prevent a return TD.
  • Dud-- Mason Crosby: Keep the kick-offs in bounds there, gramps.
Coaching:
  • Stud-- Petals: His offense really started to make some hay last night.
  • Dud-- Petals, Menenga, and Pettine: Two short fields off of ST gaffes, a complete inability to stop the run, and some suspect GL play-calling... this was a group effort.
Other Notes:
  • Rodgers MUCH better at getting the ball out and beating the blitz.
  • Light was individually responsible for at least three ruined rush attempts.
  • Graham made a nice TD catch, but if can't make a play at the end of the game then he is very nearly worthless-- being big and catching a ball is basically the only calling card he has left.
  • Martinez is a hard player to work around. He doesn't have cover skills to handle man responsibilities, but he also doesn't have take on skills to deal with blockers. So if you put a safety next to him, the rush defense is toast and if you put a true linebacker next to him, the second level of the defense will get savaged in the passing attack.
  • Redmond really struggled, as did Kevin King at times.

My thoughts:

D is somewhat overrated, but is missing less pieces than our offense. It seems every time we field a high caliber pass/run defense, the other gets atrocious. This is not a top 5 D, but it could be top 10 by the end of the year and that should be enough. We could have had 2 sacks where Wentz miraculously gets away. 1 or 2 players away to be considered complete and stout imo.

HOWEVER many have hope for our O, and this was probably Aarods best outing this year. But it was against 3rd and 4rd stringers at DB. Jones is good, but is he good enough to be a bellcow and consistently take the pressure off Aaron? I extremely doubt it. Also people calling for MLF's head for not going for it on the 1 yard line - I too would have liked to see them try, but in general Jones got hammered by their front, more often behind the LOS than not. We are 2 offensive skill position starters and a capable backup swing tackle (Light got obliterated all game long in absence of Bulaga and you can bet your house that he will miss time in a season) away to even start considering this side of the roster to be sufficient.

About our coach - really wisely called the timeouts while Philly was inside our 10. Should have gone with at least 1 run from the 1 yard line, and should have gone for it on 4&2 in the first half.

Studs: Aaron, DA, King and minidud for Gmo for the 2 consecutive catches (how did he catch the first!?).

Duds: Run D as a whole, Gute for keeping the cupboard so bare at WR, A. Jones.

I'm also giving a minidud to Aaron's "leadership" and many will disagree. But him showing glimpses of negativity after every single failed play has got to stop. His empty stares, his hands in the air in disbelief, his looks at the ref or his cursing of the playcalling are not going to motivate his team. If there was ever a game where this behaviour was warranted, it was probably now because individually he played really good. But even now he wasn't flawless and he has to be wise enough that this behavior is not going to miraculously make his teammates better, and thus is not helping his team at all.

I know that in the postgame press conferences he says that he is frustrated with himself, and that he would like to be better. Yet during game time it's rarely clear that he is frustrated with himself instead of his teammate, non-calls or the playcalling. The only time where he was visibly frustrated with himself last night was probably the pass to Adams in the endzone in the 4th quarter. But believe me Aaron, as good as you are and as much as I adore you, that was not the only time you made a mistake last night. You are moving the ball good against this D, better than you have been doing all season. Keep the positivity, tell Jimmy "Come on Jimmy, you got to have that. It's fine though, we'll get them next play" instead of looking to Jimmy like wtf are you doing and not say anything at all.

Some will say Aaron is great and that being demanding and a competitor is mutually exclusive with staying positive and with that I disagree wholeheartedly. And no, this habit of Aaron is not the primary reason we lost, not by a mile. But imo it is a bigger factor for our O not rolling than people would like to acknowledge.

All and all, Our D was bound to come down at some point, but I was very much encouraged with the number of points we put up. I wouldn't have believe we would be 3-1 is to start the season, and there are still many games to go. I don't like our chances against Dallas and Kansas City this year, but everyone else is beatable! Cheer up guys, we still could be 13-3 to end the season! Here is to hoping, GPG

I was pleased with the way A. Jones caught the ball from out of the backfield last night. Too bad the run blocking was so terrible he was tackled while taking the handoff from Rodgers.

I don't have a problem with #12 showing frustration at times when things aren't going well. At least it shows he cares. And he isn't the first QB to behave this way. I've seen Brady do these things when NE is struggling.

I'm not sure it was an easy PI call, but it could have been called as such. I figure the refs didn't see quite enough interference, though i agree with you, there was definitely contact before the ball got there with the defender wrapping his arms around.

What is maddening is these refs are not consistent with these calls. Does a defender have to tackle a guy before you call DPI? The league is making damn near impossible for a coach to know what PI is so they will now not even bother to challenge.

I imagine all the negative Nellie's are saying," The Defense is a fraud. Rodgers can't do it anymore, etc.

What I saw was a hard fought game against a very good team that has had some bad luck.
Mistakes were made by special teams and we lost our best receiver at an inopportune time.
The Defense had difficulty and the offense has yet to be in rthymn. But it was not a blowout and I'm looking forward to what they will do next time. It will be tough.

I pray that Jammal is ok and D. Adam's is ready to go at the Dallas game.

Has anyone heard any news on Jammal or that Eagles player who left on a stretcher?

MVS has to use his HANDS to snatch that ball instead of waiting for it to reach his body. It was not an easy catch by any means and he very well may have been interfered with, but that's YOUR BALL. His lack of fight and toughness and his inability to make contested catches through contact are concerning.

If the defender is holding your arms its hard to catch the ball with your chest.

I'm a bit surprised at all the negativity towards Jimmy G in regards to this game and this game alone. Maybe its a hangover effect from how bad he has been in the past. Could he have caught the one TD pass? Maybe, but it wasn't a sure thing. He had 61 yards and a TD on 6 catches, I will take that every game from him.
I won’t. Rodgers was forcing the ball to him.... obviously doing everything he could to get Graham involved. Yeah he caught some of them... but he was anything but reliable. That feeble one hand attempt wasn’t his only failure... he just looks sluggish and unsure.

I'm tellin' ya, he had no chance. It was as if the defender, Jones, had just applied a bear hug to him from behind. When the ball got there, his right arm was definitely impeded. Possibly both!

Just found this shot at The Athletic... You know how fast that ball caromed off of MVS? This is a split second after, before the INT. Look at how the defender, Jones, has both of MVS's arms locked. Should have been a PI call. But, NFL officials don't like making correct calls, or even trying to get them right.
That may be completely true... but we need a receiver that is not only quick enough but strong enough to fight for that ball.

He isnt playing against a HS JV backup. I defy any WR from Jerry Rice to Randy Moss to catch a pass while being bear hugged. He would have to break the hug (DB has all the leverage) and extend his arms and catch the ball in about 0.2 seconds.
No he needs to already have his arms up and avoid the hug altogether.

Had he run the ball twice and lost yardage or fumbled, I think people would probably be ripping on him today for trying that?

The Packers were getting stuffed at the LOS all over the field when they tried to run the ball. When the defense is standing in the endzone, they all are much closer to the LOS, making it even harder to pick up just one yard. IMO, given the Packers previous failures running the ball during the game, MLF made the right call not to try and run it in those situations, but he obviously didn't have the right passing plays called or enough skilled players to get it done.
While I agree with that... lining up and running it at least once might just open up a receiver on the next play.

Gee, I thought King was one of the few bright spots on D last night.

I can understand that because he did have a couple nice PBU's, but I would wager that if you went back and watched all his snaps you would see some troubling plays. He got beat pretty badly on a couple of plays where the pass just didn't connect.

between the beer, all the stoppages, and pretty much all action at the other end of the field, I don’t have much of an evaluation for last night.

I didn’t even realize Bulaga was not out there.

We still don’t have a run game, Martinez had a bad night. Balls were coming out faster. JG has too low of percentage for contested catches for me to even want him on the field anymore.

And replay and the attitude and thoughts it seems to foster in fans is not helping the game.

Could be. I honestly think the Rodgers roll out was a designed bootleg and he intended to run it in, which actually would have been a brilliant call, but Philly was ready for it. I don't think people are giving the Eagles players and coaching staff enough credit. They played a hell of a game.

Last night and before last night even, was a good example of needing 3 RB's suited for a game. I guess you could call Vitale that 3rd RB, but he hasn't really done enough to be called anything but a blocker and occasional pass catcher.

Mason Crosby: Keep the kick-offs in bounds there, gramps.

Much like the one before that was returned how many yards, that you sighted him for making the saving tackle on? The coverage on that kick was just horrendous.

I have seen this before, a team makes a big return or two and then the kicker is instructed to do whatever he can to keep the ball away from returner. I don't think Mason intended to kick it out of bounds, but he definitely miss hit a ball, maybe trying to do something different, due to that previous return.

If you are referring to the play where he ended up having to sale it over Graham’s head... I agree. That was one of my frustrations with Graham. If Graham had run to the back of the end zone, it would have opened up a lane at the front for Rodgers to run it in.... or Graham would have been wide open in the back of the end zone if the defender had chosen to come up on Rodgers.

Yes I get what you are saying and I agree to a point, but I think not trying to run it once, at least a QB sneak ala Bart Starr in the ice bowl game was negligent.

You think he mis-hit it but did intend for it to go out of bounds?

I agree. Graham looked old and tired. The quick turnaround seemed to really affect him.

You know it did occur to me though after seeing Mercedes Lewis make that hurdle through defenders and knock them back earlier in that game that we should use him as a RB for goal line situations. And why not?

I'm going to bet he'd be 1000x better than Cordarelle Patterson at it and for sure better than Ty Mont. Since we don't target him enough as a TE and he should have more use than blocking, I say stick him in at RB or FB.
