Bryan Bulaga was the only player not participating in Monday's workout. Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Lucas Patrick and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who sat out the preseason finale vs. the Rams because of injury took part, in the team's first practice of Week 1. In addition Kentrell Brice practiced after injuring a shoulder on Thursday.

Like you said last week, every indication (from the Packers), is that Bulaga's injury isn't too serious and he should play Sunday. What I would love to know is if TT has been busy combing the FA market for depth on the OL. If not, the health of our starting 5 could be critical all season long. While I wouldn't mind seeing the Packers signing Dial to strengthen the DL even more, I would glady not have that happened if it meant bringing in a decent backup for the OL.

I agree that with the signing of Brooks to bolster the depth at outside linebacker I'm most worried about the backups on the offensive line entering the season, especially with Barclay having being put on injured reserve. It would definitely be smart for Thompson to add another veteran there.

While former Viking/49er G Boone would be an intriguing signing, I think his price might be too high for a backup, but he seems like the kind of guy who would want to stick it to the Vikings and a chance to do that and a possible Super Bowl, might be incentive enough for him to sign cheaper. I wouldn't mind seeing them sign John Greco. He can play G, C and RT in a pinch. They need the diversity of someone like that.

According to rumors it seems Boone might be interested in joining the Dolphins. While signing either him or Greco would be intriguing options to add to the depth chart I'm not convinced either of them would be interested in being a backup after having started in the league for several years running.

Or play for backup like money. Boone still receives $3.4M from the Vikings, so he might not be too cash strapped at the moment to need a big contract. I can see him wanting to step right in and start.

You are right though on the idea of signing to be a backup, but at this point, can they fully expect to just step right in on a quality team? Greco at the age of 32, might see being in Green Bay a welcome relief from Cleveland and be willing to contribute whatever he needs to on a winning team.

Both of them might want to wait a little bit before signing as a backup with a contender as all it takes is one injury to another player for either one of them being called to be a starter though.

I see.....so we won't see them in GB until ....after Sunday's game? ;)

This is where TT needs to have learned a lesson from last year at the RB and CB positions. Don't wait until a position is in absolute dire straights to sign someone. Perceive the need, fill it and keep your eyes looking into the future.

Absolutely agreed but unfortunately I'm not convinced there are a lot of quality backup offensive linemen available at the moment.

Or sitting on the Packer roster at the moment. ;)

The loss of Sitton, Lang and Tretter in a 6 month time frame, with only the signing of Evans, has thinned out the OL, something that was considered an area of strength and having decent depth for years.

True, the situation worsened furthermore with Spriggs not developing as expected during the offseason and training camp.

Bulaga didn't practice yesterday and is not meeting with reporters. To me that doesn't sound good to me.

I hope Boone checks the impending Miami weather before making a hasty decision.

Sorry GBkrzygrl.....I inadvertently commented on this earlier, confusing you with another poster who seems to think that only the words of MM and players themselves should be trusted in forming our opinions. So if that was true, we shouldn't worry, Bulaga stated last week he is fine!

I agree with Captain, there isn't any thing out there even close to be called a reliable veteran option. The next best thing I think is finding a promising rookie off a PS. Here is my short list.
Landon Turner, Saints
Kyle Kalis, Redskins
Adam Bisnowaty, Giants
Dorian Johnson, Cardinals.
I watched them all during their college career and honestly think each one has a future in this league.

I'm not familiar with any of them, but my question to you would be.....what can they offer the Packers in 2017? But you could be correct, we may need to start shoring of the depth of the OL for after 2017. Right now though, I am concerned with 2017 OL depth and going with a rookie that is currently sitting on a PS, doesn't sound to me like an immediate upgrade in depth.

In the Rodgers era, the Packers are 8-1 in home openers.

Rodgers in those games:

70.2% completions
22-1 TD/INT
nearly 117 passer rating

Once again, I don't believe there's currently a reliable veteran offensive lineman available interested in joining the Packers to sit on the bench. The most likely scenario to improve the depth would be to take a gamble on an ascending young player capable of playing multiple positions in my opinion.

I get that, but do you seriously believe that one of "those" guys, that as the OP suggested, who is currently sitting on another teams PS, is actually going to step right in this year and help what appears to be a lack of depth?

IMO, the most likely scenario to immediately improve our depth on the OL is to sign someone with NFL experience to back up some of the starters. I will take your word for it that currently THAT player doesn't exist on the FA market, but that also shouldn't rule out TT looking around to swing a trade for that player either.

I hope I am wrong and we may find out as quick as this Sunday if Bulaga can't go, but I think we are in a bit of trouble when one of the current 5 starting OL can't play and god forbid, 2 of them go down.

I don't doubt that when things slow down a bit, TT will be actively looking at other teams PS and FA's to see if he can improve his own depth for the near future, I'm more concerned about the immediate future.
