trading Matthews i'd be ok with, but 2 firsts? and take on an almost 20 million dollar a year man that isn't a QB? He made his money in the Super Bowl no doubt about that, but he is not a 20 million dollar a year effect on the outcome. Nick Perry put up almost the same stats last year in 2 less games on 2/3's the snaps with no secondary behind him. 20 million a year? I better see 15+ sacks before I even think of it.

If Capers isn't fired, then TT and MM need to figure out a way to shake up the ranks with the defensive coaching staff. Yes, this defense may be under talented due to TT's draft and develop mode, but something is telling me these guys aren't prepared and I put that on the coaches.

I agree with you about the coaching. The secondary coach should be fired for sure. Capers' defensive schemes were sorely lacking, especially against good QB's. Capers is a failure and should be canned.

Our secondary was terrible this year. They were never prepared properly and often out of position. That's coaching. Not one of our CB's is worth keeping. Of course, I know we can't get rid of all of them.

God we actually have a cut Gunter crowd. "Oh no he isn't a starter so he needs to be cut"

I truly wished I was suprised
Gunter is a terrible CB and deserves no defense from anyone. I read there are no good CB free agents. If this is true I would like to see TT trade for one. Drafting one is fine, but it's risky and it takes some time for those guys to develop.

I would still love for someone to explain to me which coach has magical powers to make Ladarius Gunter athletically capable of being a team's #1 CB; there were DEFENSIVE ENDS(!!!!) in Gunter's draft class that ran the 40 faster than he did. I'm sorry, but with injuries limiting Randall and Rollins and Shields being out all year, this team was going to struggle against good QBs no matter what. Also, pretty much every defense struggles against good QBs!

I remember our secondary looking pretty bad against MN in the first game.
Randall and Rollins have not developed and that is coaching. None of CB's were coached up worth one cent.
Our defense is a disaster and everyone is responsible starting with TT, MM DC...

To be fair, Hayward was a middling corner until he signed with another team. Now he's literally an all-pro. That might be a red flag as to the development of talent on the defensive side of the ball.

Or scheme. Ppl actually argued with me when I said Hayward could play on the outside. Lol looks like he can play on the outside to me.

So if we could figure this out? How come TT couldn't? He was to dumb to sign or trade for anyone. Look what happened.

Gunter is perfectly fine for a #4 CB. Which is what he was. Sorry that the #4 CB on the roster didn't look good matched up against #1 WRs. In other news Allison isn't as good as Jordy or Adams either. Probably should cut him tommorow.

This is why people call out others for expecting starters to occupy every single freaking roster spot. Because they do. This very statement proves it and the fact that anyone agreed with it is an indictment on the board in general

What's funny is that Gunter actually DID have some good games against starting wideouts. But he absolutely couldn't handle Julio or Dez. Which anyone could have predicted.

I think asking Kazee to start day one would be a mistake. I'm an SDSU alum (which doesn't mean anything except that I've see a lot of Kazee over the years). He's very good. He should develop into a good starter or 3rd corner. But a lot of what he's asked to do in the pros, especially this defense, is different from how he made his living with the Aztecs. He needs to spend a season as a backup.

The cornerback position completely lacked talent. There was nothing that Capers or Whitt could have done to improve their play.

I agree that the CB position lacked any talent, especially in the speed department.

How many years have the Packers had a weak secondary? How many years has Whitt been coaching the secondary. I still hold Whitt responsible for our horrible secondary play.

The Packers pass defense was actually pretty good in 2012, '14 and '15.

If we can draft ILB Zach Cunningham and CB Damontae Kazee they would both Start and make our defense more reliable.

I don't like Zach Cunningham's tape that much at all. He gets washed out of plays and isn't a very strong tackler. He got overhyped to begin with, but he's starting to slip. If somehow he makes it to the third, I wouldn't mind, but I'm not sold using a first or second for him.

when you can run on a defense...there's really no need to pass the ball. In 2012 the run defense was ranked 17, in 2014 they finished 23, and 2015 they finished 21. So the fact that they had an average pass defense in those seasons don't really tell the story. They couldn't really stop the run which is more than likely going to mean few pass attempts against you therefore skewing the number of yards given up against your secondary.

Agree. We don't need another Clay Matthews.

According to Football Outsiders the Packers pass defense ranked 7th in 2012, 11th in '14 and 6th in '15 in DVOA, which is a much better metric than yards allowed.

Which is true...but again, who needs to pass when you can run on a team.

Well, the Packers finished 2012 with the 10th most opposing pass attempts as well as 11th in '14. The team (20th) only ranked in the bottom half of the league in that category in '15.
