Maybe that was because the defenders often didn't get close enough to even try a tackle, much less miss one?
thats all fair enough cap, but in the games I've watched this season the amount of long yardage gains and 1st down gains that could have been prevented still need working on.
i'm not saying tackling costs us in any particular game or in the playoffs, just IMO we need to improve on it
I absolutely agree the defense didn´t perform at a decent level this season but the numbers support the impression that tackling wasn´t a major issue in 2016.
So what's that say about a team who gave up nearly 30 points a game..in all their games lost. Because I can tell you for sure that you aren't a good tackling team when you do that.
I guess the secondary allowing a ton of uncontested completions was the main reason for the defense struggling.
Keep: most of defense this year except for jones, peppers, gunter and hyde
I can't talk much about personel changes, as apart from the packers I don't really follow the nfl/college etc..
but one thing I keep noticing over and over again is our inability to tackle, time after time I see our secondary just diving at opposition players legs hoping to knock them down, which players can quite easily jump over or just bounce off. our D seem to be unable to wrap up rb's/wr's and bring them down which brings more yardage and 1st downs to our opponents. This in my eyes is a coaching issue, and needs urgently addressed
he has a bad back so bad that they put him on IRWatt missed a game for the first time during his NFL career this season, I hardly would call him injury prone.
I dont think Clay is worth a 1st round neitherI don't have a dog in this fight, but, come on, now you're just digging in your heels. JJ played in all 16 games every year until 2016. Miller's contract, although longer term, would cost the obtaining team about the same as the Pack is scheduled to pay Matthews next year.
We have done a pretty poor job of drafting and playing complete CBs. Hayward Rollins Randall Gunter etc are all overall average CBs. Can probably say something similar about our ILBs for the last 5 years now too
I dont think Clay is worth a 1st round neither
I think most of the GM's that would do that for us have been fired. I guess you never know when stupid and desperate rears it's head though. It would be sweet to get that offer.I dont think Clay is worth a 1st round neither
We are not talking about what jj did in the past, his present he went on IR for having a bad back I wouldnt give up my 1st round for JJ, Von miller i can see getting the 1st round maybe but his salary and hes been in the league going on 7 years already. Far from laughable to me.That's open for debate, but I'll that one to you. But to your previous point, JJ Watt and Von Miller not being worth a 1st round choice is just laughable.

To be fair, Hayward was a middling corner until he signed with another team. Now he's literally an all-pro. That might be a red flag as to the development of talent on the defensive side of the ball.
Gunter is fine as a backup cornerback but he shouldn't have to cover #1 receivers. I would e fine with re-signing Hyde for depth as well.
Once again, Watt hadn't missed a single game during his career before this season. I don't believe the back injury will be an issue for him going forward.
To be fair Hayward is way better suited to play in the Chargers zone scheme compared to what Capers predominantly likes to run.
The Chargers didn't run a zone scheme under Pagano.
People keep bringing up Hayward but what people gotta remember is he was hurt most of the time he played in Green Bay. He lacked elite speed to play outside in Capers system and was best used in the slot. He obviously could of been used last year but there is more to it then just keeping him.
I think its great to see what Hayward has done in San Diego and im happy for him but if you have Shields and supposedly two emerging young guys why pay Hayward big money when at the time he had availability concerns and was seen as a slot corner in system?
The fact is some guys you lose and do better in a new surrounding or a new system. You cant just take Haywards success in San Diego and automatically assume that same success would of happened if he was still in Green Bay.
I'm quite sure in hindsight Hayward would have presented an upgrade over the cornerbacks that ended up playing most of the defensive snaps for the Packers last year.
I didn't watch any San Diego games this season but according to McGinn the Chargers primarily ran a zone scheme this season.
