The opening week of free agency is all about player friendly and team gouging deals. GM's have no leverage in the first week. It's an auction for desperate GM's. Sanity doesn't come calling until later.

Exactly this is actually the week where incompetent GMs overpay like mad, raising the overall level of compensation and force A) more commercial breaks during the games and B) higher ticket prices. The pants ******* on here are more or less celebrating the ongoing ******** of their persons.

Hyde was NOT a starter. He was never better than #3 at any position.

While I agree with the Packers decision to let Hyde walk away in free agency the #3 cornerback is basically a starter in the NFL right now. The team has to replace him with a decent player though as he was the best CB on the team last season.

Woodson and Peppers weren't signed in week 1 of free agency, were they? Was Pickett?

Actually the Packers signed Peppers during the first week of free agency and Pickett wasn't a top notch player. While there are exceptions of elite players lasting longer than the first few days of FA for various reasons I don't consider any of the cornerbacks still available to be a shutdown CB.

Peppers wasn't any good last year. Oh my!!! How will he be replaced?

Peppers performed on a decent level accumulating 7.5 sacks in a limited role. Currently the Packers lack a player capable of making up for his production.

I was trying to reply in a way which the sky wasn't falling but after reading through enough posts about how we're now only a step up from being the Jaguars all because we didn't splurge on on tier one FAs and lost Michael freaking Hyde and a backup offensive linemen..... I'm done..... Wait the Jaguars spent big Bucks on Bouye and worked the trade market.... They actually must want to win unlike us.....

Well, what about comparing the Packers offseason with the best team in the league instead of a bottom feeder though???

It sucks how we never land any big name guys when they are still in the prime of their career , brandon marshall was available how do you not make a run at him ? Desean jackson , alshon jeffrey ? Will rodgers ever have another mvp caliber guy to throw 2 ? the guys i mentioned are starving for a chip and seems like building threw the draft is getting old , please help me its mind boggling why we dont go harder in free agency pick ups or trades .

The Packers don't need to add another high priced wide receiver to the roster.

Great point! But do they have a pick in the first 3 rounds right now?

The Patriots currently have two third round selections (72nd and 96th) in this year's draft. They could add more picks by trading Garoppolo though.

I just saw the Tretter contract numbers, 3yr/16.5m , 10m guaranteed. PFF had him rated as the best center available in FA.

Tip of my hat to a couple of you posters that predicted this. I didn't think he'd command a contract like that.

As of now, it looks like Hyde off sets Bennett. A real possibility we dont get compensation for Peppers. Tretters deal should get us a 5th in 18.
Looks to be similar to Hayward when taking salary inflation into account.

I still dont think Lang will be back. Cook may get us a 5th, 4th at best. If Lacy signs elsewhere, maybe a 7th.

Right now, I'd guess we end up with 3 compensatory picks in 18. Probably something like two 5th's and a 7th.

Geez, the defense is still in need of dire upgrades at cornerback and outside linebacker and you're already talking about compensatory picks in 2018???

In my opinion you have bought way too much into Thompson's MO.

I still dont think we know what the Packers have in Hundley. Really hard to give him any kind of evaluation with even such little pre-season play.

based on his scrambling ability... Garopolo is 3-1 on the superbowl winning roster. Not super impressed like some people seem to be...

Also am i the only one aware that brady is damn near 40? And the pats are selling his replacment??? Speaks for itself to me. People have a lack of common sense now days imo.

Im not sold on Jimmy G either. He did go 3-1 but I still didn't think he was all that stellar and chalked those more up to "team" victories more then anything he did.

If they can manage to ship him out for a high pick they'd be wise to do so. They do appear to be going all in and history is not kind to QBs Brady's age so gething a few high picks back in this comming draft sure will help.

I'm not saying it's going to be this year but I'd bet money by next season we're looking at Brady much like we looked at Manning at 2 years ago. The falls going to come hard and fast so the fact that they're shopping the "supposed" future should speak volumes

Agree. But the way hundley came out and played as a green rookie...... I was very impressed. He looked better than most good qbs, coming out of the gates.

He is big and physical. Some great tools for a coach to work with

Was just making mention of the current free agent scorecard. Sorry to have annoyed you and Yooperpackfan with my observation. Perhaps you should put me on ignore.

Unless you're reminding everyone for the 6 billionth time that the Packers need a #1 corner, OR advocating that TT hand the keys to the organization over to the staff at profootballfocus.com, please kindly refrain from posting.

There's no reason to put too much stock into Hundley's performance in the preseason.

Once again, you ignoring the obvious doesn't make it go away.

In addition I rather trust PFF's breakdown as they have former football players and coaches working for them, grading every single snap from each game instead of listening to a random guy on a message board telling me his analysis is far superior to it.

How could I possibly ignore it? You hardly let a post go by without reminding me and everyone else. It seems that you're under the illusion that all of us repeating the mantra "we need a #1 corner" will actually have an effect on the Packers' roster. We all know. We all want one. Some of us are talking about other things in the meantime.

I don't think it ever looked "crazy," it's just not a pick a lot of us are enthusiastic about given the state of our defense.

Corner needs to be considered the greater need but you never know how the board is going to fall. A stud OL would be better than a middling CB despite not suiting the roster's biggest issues. Not telling you anything you don't already know, I'm sure. Just thinking out loud.

House is signing with a team, but it's not the Packers according to NFL Trade rumors.

https://twitter.com/nfltrade_rumors/status/841000296998395904

That will save the Packers $4M to spend elsewhere. I'm starting to think that TT is staying pat on his current group of young CB's and we might see him sign another FA as well as draft players that will put more pressure on the QB. His hope, his young corners aren't left alone on a island too long to have to defend. Not saying that will work, but sure doesn't look like a top CB is in our near future.

That Forrest Lamp pick is not looking too crazy now. TJ Lang signed withe Lions.

Thompson has never drafted a college guard before the third round during his tenure and hasn't selected one since the 2011 draft. Therefore I don't expect him to spend the team's first round pick on the position.

His hope, his young corners aren't left alone on a island too long to have to defend.

Unfortunately the Packers cornerbacks weren't able to cover opposing receivers for at least two seconds last season. Even with an elite pass rush there's no chance to put any pressure on a quarterback consistently in that short amount of time.

If the Packers go into next season with a rookie or two plus a couple of UDFA's added to the existing suckendary, expect the same results. Doing nothing or repeating failed strategies like relying on UDFA and rookies to replace other failed UDFA's and rookies is not a wise practice when you have the worst pass defense in the nfl.
