Tretter signed with the Browns yesterday as well.

You're right, my mistake hard to keep up with sometimes. That one actually made me scratch my head. According to Spotrac his market value was going to be something ridiculous so I was surprised he signed for what he did.

So Ted only overpays for our own FAs but he's too cheap to sign Lang, Hyde and apparently Cook?

I think Ted is an easy negotiator. Tells people what the offer is and you can take it or leave it with a little wiggle room. If Cook wants more than Ted is willing to give, then go get it dog.

I liked the guy, but he's not a super star. None of us know the money being discussed so it's a bit premature to have a real strong opinion.

I view him as very similar to Perry. Except he doesn't play nearly as premium as a position. And he's a bit older I think? Could be wrong. Anyway, coming in knocks were health, playing thru injury, and not a consistent performer, but could create mismatches because of physical attributes and was capable of big plays. And IMO he was all of that last year the good and bad.

For the great play he made in Dallas, didn't he have 2 or 3 early drops right in the hands against the Falcons? We were pretty explosive when he played, he missed a bunch of the year too.

He has definite value to this team, but what's he looking for?

What I find interesting is that he was quoted as saying how much he loves playing with Aaron, the best QB in the league blah, blah, blah. Now I have no idea what the Packers offered him, but, Do you want to play on a winning team or not?

There all getting out while they can.

Looks like old "smooth operator" needs to ramp up his good old UDFA signings this year even more.

Haven't seen it mentioned lately, so let me interject "it's a business" - and, a matter of degree. If a player has made obscene money for a long time, the ring might be nice. However, one that hasn't might view the ring as the icing and want more of the cake.

Panthers have just as good a chance if not better to win a super bowl as the Packers so I don't think the glamour of playing for ring really registered with him anymore.

Not that the Panthers have no chance but good lord at the "if not better" part

Interesting stat of the day:

124 teams have had multiple 1,000-yard receivers in the same season The Redskins could be the first to lose both in the following offseason.

list of starters that have bolted this season? do you have that list in front of you?

I'm assuming Lang and Cook and Lacy are all gone. All those guys started games. Tretter started games. Hyde started games. Peppers started games.

Regardless, those are six spots that need to be filled. Last time I checked we have 8 draft picks with other needs to be filled as well.

Probably two things. First, Barclay is Barclay - there are levels of 'backup', and his is way down the list. Second, the news came in the middle of discussions of how the Pack could possibly be helped, and this move certainly isn't it.
Everybody needs a backup center. Barclay is it. He worked at it in camp last year, played one full game at the position against the Browns last preseason.

1 year, $1.3 mil, cheap. Hard to argue, especially in the "who else ya got" equation. It answers the question of whether they'd work Murphy at the position. They might still as a tertiary emergency option; that guy's future is in the interior, not at OT.

How many of our starters have to bolt before you start re-assessing this even being a playoff team?
As long as Aaron Rodgers is at QB this team will continue being a playoff-caliber team.;) Doesn't matter if a back-up DB or OC leaves... or a 30 yr. old TE, weight-challenged RB, or former 1st rounder (Peppers, D. Jones).

I wouldn't worry. They have Guion as a "territory emergency" as well at OL as seen in NFC Champ game.

While I believe Rodgers to be the best ever this is far from the mentality we need to win a Super Bowl.

It looks like WRs below the elite level are sliding down the pay scale. A couple of factors:

1) Belichick has demonstrated since Randy Moss' departure that you can score and win while not spending much at the position. The popularity (and pay) of speedy, pass catching TEs derives from the same source. It's a copy cat league, even if entrenched philosophies are slow to catch up.

2) The realization that gaudy WR stats are as much a function of who is throwing the ball as it is the guy catching it. That's certainly not to say they are all created equal, of course. But 1,000 yds. with either a decent QB or a team that throws a lot is like 750 with a team that does neither.

Of course, none of this applies in Green Bay. Going with ball control passing allows accumulating possession receivers who come cheap. The more success the Packers have in ball control passing mode (like throwing to Montgomery a dozen times), keeping a defense that cannot close games off the field, the sooner they abandon it.

There's a commonly stated bromide, which carries some truth: "If you have an elite QB you start at 8-8 and work your way up. Of course you could go 4-12 as in 2005 if one wants to consider Favre and elite QB. NO with Brees? Some bad seasons there since the SB. McCarthy's probably better than that, but not certainly.

Cobb isn't exactly cheap.. And "possession receivers" aren't the greatest at getting open.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say in replay regarding Cobb. That he's an expensive possession receiver? Well, he didn't earn that contract as such; if that's where he is now then he's overpaid.

A possession receiver, if he's decent, by definition gets open in the short field but won't wow anybody with downfield big plays. He'll have good hands and take a hit.

Cases in point:

Amendola: 3 years, $4.75 mil per year

Eddelman: 4 years, $4.25 mil per year

Hogan: 3 years, $4 mil per year

And when they start to get a little old and little expensive and/or a little too much concussed (as with Welker), Belichick says, "enjoy your ring(s) and see you later."

And if downfield receivers get cheep enough as teams start to follow his model, Belichick will just go back to the old "Moss model".

Peppers JUST signed elsewhere. Tretter started to replace a guy and then was injured and the starter came back and he's still here and he's still cheap. Hyde was NOT a starter. He was never better than #3 at any position. Lacy is not gone, Lang is not gone. Where have they signed?

From your list, outside of Lang who still has not dried ink anywhere, the rest is really reaching man. outside of Lacy and if he's still a gluttonous pig, he can play elsewhere.

Uh, Tretter's gone to Cleveland at $16.75 mil over 3 years. I'm sure that's been copiously documented throughout this forum, but I'll leave you to check on that. Cleveland got a pretty decent center at a price that currently ranks him as the 11th. highest paid at the position on a per year basis.

http://overthecap.com/position/center/

This outcome was easily predicted.
