Will the defense hold teams to three points every game? No, but there's absolutely no question that the defense has improved. Exactly how much, we'll find out. But this is far and away a better unit than 2018.

And based on some of their postgame comments, they're sort of playing with a chip on their shoulder.

I 100% want to be able to agree with everyone that has their chests puffed out and declaring that the Packer Defense is vastly improved. Last night, they definitely looked that way, no doubt that defense played one of its better games in years. However, I have to reign that excitement in just a tad, due to the fact that its just one game, the first game of the season, against a Bears offense that didn't exactly look like world beaters.

I don't expect Pettine and the Packers to sit back and rest on their laurels of one game either. Last night was a great start for the Defense, but lets keep it going for 15+ more games and get even better, because we are going to be facing much better offenses than the one we saw last night.

The Good news, I expect our Offense to improve and look much better than they did last night, against one of the best defenses in the NFL.

It's never just the defense or the offense. Of course our offense needs to improve, but we faced the best defense in the league.
Of course our defense played great, but we faced an above average offense amongst the 32.

The good news is that we won a game where we were shamefully beaten last season.

No question is a better team then the one we had a year ago.

Our offense didn't look good either. So does that mean the Bears defense isn't good?

A lot of times defenses make offenses look bad. That happened to both teams last night. Is our defense as good as it looked last night? Probably not. Are they vastly improved over last year? You'd have to be blind to say no.

I understand your hesitation, but the injection of fresh talent, and the fact that they were out there given them the business making play after play is why I'm coming to the conclusion I've come to.

Even using the eye test, there's just so much more talent out there. And again I'll say, the defense was actually respectful down the stretch last year.

I am not going to debate with you as to how either of us should "feel" about the Packers Defense after one game. If you read my post more carefully, you will find that we actually agree. I'm just not ready to declare this defense as "vastly improved" after the first game of the season. This isn't me saying they they haven't vastly improved, its me putting one game in perspective.

Our offense didn't look like world beaters either so does that mean the Bears defense may not be as good as people are saying.:D

Seriously you are right but on the plus side, and a reason to be more excited, its not like it was the same sucky personnel who suddenly came out of the blue and lit things up and we have to worry about it being a fluke. We have lots of new guys on the defense and by most accounts they were expected to be much better than what we had in the recent past. No one knew how good they could be but people were expecting improvement and I think that is what we saw.

I think we can be forgiven a bit for not worrying that they will revert to what they used to be because they didn't used to be anything. We can hope that what we saw is what they are because we have no reason to think otherwise other than simply being cautious.

Edit: OK seriously. I HAVE to learn to read all the posts before I reply. Isn't there a support group for that out there somewhere.

You won't fit in here unless you have some knee jerk reactions and "Season is done. Fire Murphy, Retire Aaron" type threads.

Can't believe the defense actually won us a game. Cannot remember the last time I said that. Thought the Bears were going to tie it up for sure and Rodgers was going to have to make some plays. Never been more happy to be wrong.

Offense looked terrible, but that was expected. New offense with limited reps so far, on the road, against a damn good defense. That will get better with time, no doubt.

I am not going to say this defense is amazing, but I sure think they are going to be better than what we've seen in recent years. And even a moderately improved defense could go a very long way.

Reminded me of when Charles Woodson said the same thing about Cutler.

the experimental, "work-in-progress", O looked like crap all game long. it was the bears' D, and they gave the Packers fits, but rodgers didn't have a good throw all night. too low, too high, behind, ahead, floaters, and a prayer that was caught by graham for a td. held the ball too long, didn't set his feet. the O looked like it hadn't had a snap in anger all preseason. oh...wait!
thank petine and gute for the D that looked very good. penalties were a problem for both teams especially the bears. MLF's decision to run on 3rd down late when they needed a first down thankfully didn't come back to bite them. scott is an all-pro lol. special teams looked great. no running game but again that bear front 7 is very tough.
an unexpected W is always the sweetest. 1-0!!

Honestly that's what I was expecting to happen. The Bears tie it and Rodgers drives them down and Mason knocks through the game winner.

I fully understand the call for tempering expectations and I also realize that it was the Bears offense (gotta get that dig in there as often as we can right?) but this defense just has a different feel to it to me. I know every game won't be this good but for the first time in a while I feel we are not going about it with a bunch of JAGs. I want to say its a whole new attitude but even more than that I think we finally have some players who can back up the attitude.

A lot of people (like the idiots at PFF) will try to take credit away from the defense on the basis of opponent.

But it should be noted that the Bears were a top 10 scoring offense last year, and they were at home.

The NFL Network is about to re-show last night's game. I think I'll go and watch it again. It is always fun to beat the Bears 2 days in a row. :roflmao:

if i venture on, it's the shoutbox for games. Usually i stay away from there, but even with as ugly as the game was at times, the normal death is upon us crew wasn't around. Or at least I didn't see them. Pretty nice over there tonight

I don't go on during the game. It can be quite negative sometimes.

No doubt. I generally stay away from the forum during games and during the immediate aftermath. All the emotional overreaction is annoying.

I bet you're one of those who jumps up and down during games and yells a lot.

Over-emotional weak human.

The American Red Cross is opening a new donation request:

Storm Surge! Tears of sorrow from the south meeting tears of joy from the north. Save Kenosha. Text 10-03 to Hurricane Bearsuck with your donation.
I thought I heard something about that storm. The Gale Force Sayers winds n all. The wind Sears almost blew the tower over. Gave ‘em a good swift kick in the Butkus ;)

He said the game plan was to make Trubisky play quarterback. I didn't really like him saying that, to be honest, no matter how true it is. It seems a bit like rubbing it in, like you said. Too much publicly disrespecting an opponent, too much chalkboard material.

I typically look for some solid fellow in close proximity that I can climb up and shout in jubilation.

I would enjoy doing this with you sometime. Explore these human feelings.
