The Case for Paying Aaron Jones

Should the Packers Extend Jones (assumes he would accept contract comparable to the one mentioned)

I like how you just ignored the whole argument and pretended it didn't exist. Jones is the second best receiving threat on this team. How do you just gloss over that?
That’s like saying you’re the best looking of all the cousins, it’s still not that good looking.

He’s a fine player. He happened to play on a team who’s 2nd WR played like half a season after coming off the practice squad. It’s not a high bar

look, he's a terrific player but he's going to be a $12m/yr player. it's him (and others) or rodgers beyond this season. take your pick.

The Packers shouldn't pay him $12m/yr, I'm not sure any RB contract with that value has worked out.

It would be absolutely crazy to prefer paying a running back $12 million a season over keeping a HOF quarterback.

Yes it would but that's certainly not the choice here. Whether they pay jones 12 m per or not Rodgers is still gonna be the qb in 2021 and very very likely 2022. 2023 is where you might see Rodgers in another uniform.

12m a year or north seems to be the going rate now for a star running back that can rush for over 1000 yards while catching 50 to 80 balls.

Cook, kamara, and mccaffery all got paid jones will too. Whether it's in gb or somewhere else. I'd go out on a limb and say that those 3 are definitely going to work out. All 3 had at least 2 tds yesterday.

My response was to gbgary who has been advocating for the Packers to release Rodgers after this season.

Yet two of their teams lost the game. I highly doubt paying that much money to a running back is a good idea for any team.

not a chance i'm paying him 12M per year. I guess there's no chance i'm paying him 500 a year either, but you get my point.

Right on, didn't know he was advocating that haha...that is insane, zero chance. Maybe if somehow love is that good in practice and somebody offers you like 3 first round picks. But release?

What's being paid to Cook can't be used as the reason they choose to go with cousins as qb. Yeah you're never gonna win a superbowl with cousins but that's not cooks fault.

I'd agree it's not smart to pay a rb that kind of money unless you have your true franchise qb in position. Which is also the problem in carolina.

Also it is definitely important that all 3 of those guys and jones are more flex,to steal a term from ff, than pure rb. They all are expected to contribute like a good 3rd/4th wr in the passing game. I don't mean the same routes, nessicarily, I mean the same results.

Kamara 2017- 81/826/5 2018 81/709/4 2019 81/533/1

Mccaffery 2017 80/651/5 2018 107/867/6 2019 116/1005/4

Cook 2018 40/305/2 2019 53/519/0

Jones 2018 26/206/1 2019 49/474/3

So if you're getting 1000 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving from these guys....12 m doesn't seem as bad. I do understand the argument that running backs are easy to draft or even pick up as an undrafted guy. But I think when you have your unquestioned future hall of fame qb in what's likely his last 3 shots to win you a super bowl. The circumstances and player dictate at least some very serious consideration

I guarantee there's at least one team out there willing to overpay for Jones if he hits free agency next year.
I don't know if it would be overpaying but someone would pay him...yes. That is why you sign him now. I thought MLF did a very good job of mixing up the running attack. Giving Williams playing time. And even the two runs by AJ Dillon mixed it up. Much better than seeing Jones on the field all game. But that does not mean he is not worth it.

This is the key. We have a unique opportunity that we should not squander by draft and rebuild nonsense of TT. If there's a time to go for the SB, this is it. It'd be a waste to rock the boat right now. Perhaps 3 year deal.

it's not just between those two. it's keeping jones and possibly two or three other guys vs rodgers. clark's big hits start in 2022. if they extend/sign others with that same formula they'll need that cap space.
whoever they keep/sign or let go, rodgers cap hit will be at the center of it all in this covid era. some very difficult decisions will be made that fans will be forced to accept. maybe for you, and some others, love will be a total bust and we'll see rodgers wither away with a $36-40m cap hit.

You must not have watched yesterday’s game. Rodgers’ 4 touchdown passes and over 300 yards passing doesn’t happen by jettisoning him. It would be great to keep everyone but that’s not how it works. It really sounds to me like you would like to spread the money around and have a perpetually mediocre team. Great players cost money and despite your opinion Rodgers is one.

Orrrrr, and just hear me out here, they could extend some other players, shift guaranteed money to signing bonus to lower cap hits in certain years, and manufacture cap space like other teams do. Also, maybe, just maybe, Rodgers doesn't whither away since, y'know, he was a better QB 4 years ago than either Brady or Brees have ever been and there's no reason he can't age the same way those two have.

covid-cap is a 4 year deal. pushing money back makes things worse without dumping salary. the inexpensive first-contract players better turn out as good as expensive players they'll be replacing.

Yup. It's how great teams get made.

It seems Love hasn't been good enough in this year's camp to move past Boyle on the depth chart. With him not receiving any meaningful snaps for the rest of this season it would be insane to move on from Rodgers before the start of the 2021 league year.

What's being paid to Cook can't be used as the reason they choose to go with cousins as qb. Yeah you're never gonna win a superbowl with cousins but that's not cooks fault.

My point being that no running back in the league is that much better than his possible replacement to justify paying him $12 million or even more money per year.

It's smarter to use the cap space on different positions on the roster.

I do understand the argument that running backs are easy to draft or even pick up as an undrafted guy. But I think when you have your unquestioned future hall of fame qb in what's likely his last 3 shots to win you a super bowl. The Packers won't have the cap space to make it a smart move to re-sign Jones.

I don't know if it would be overpaying but someone would pay him...yes. That is why you sign him now.

Actually that's why the Packers should let Jones walk away in free agency next offseason.

This is the key. We have a unique opportunity that we should not squander by draft and rebuild nonsense of TT. If there's a time to go for the SB, this is it. It'd be a waste to rock the boat right now. Perhaps 3 year deal.

Gutekunst spending the team's first four picks of this year's draft on backups was a waste of ressources. Letting Jones walk away in free agency would be a smart choice though.

it's not just between those two. it's keeping jones and possibly two or three other guys vs rodgers.

I understand the Packers would save a lot of cap space over the next few years by moving on from Rodgers after this season. But the drop-off in performance doesn't warrant to even think about it, especially after Love wasn't even able to move past Boyle on the depth chart.

covid-cap is a 4 year deal. pushing money back makes things worse without dumping salary. the inexpensive first-contract players better turn out as good as expensive players they'll be replacing.

It's likely the salary cap will increase again from the 2022 season on. Therefore backloading contracts might be necessary to make it work for next season.

I agree the performance of players on their rookie deals is essential for a team's success but Love hasn't done anything to justify having confidence in him.

Always need what I’ve bolded. That’s what separates the elite teams from the rest of the league. Got to be good at developing young players. I hope we have the coaches in place that can do that.

Well, first and foremost the young players have to be talented enough to be developed into good ones.

How on esrth did you come up with that conclusion based on my previous post???
Inference. Your reply inferred that some players drafted aren’t of sufficient talent to be a successful player in this league.

It's definitely correct that some players the Packers have drafted over the past few years aren't good enough to play in the NFL. That happens to every team.

That doesn't mean that I believe the team doesn't have any talent on the roster by any means though.
