Why not? If you picked a guy for your roster, give him the chance to see what he can do. No better time than OTA's and training camp.

I am not sure of the force feed part. You want to run your offense during OTA's. You want to take the plays the defense gives you. Force feeding guys means neglecting how you run your offense. Now if you mean give them a fair amount of snaps then yes

He's not winning games for us on special teams. Eventually there will be a real contributor on offense or defense who also can play special teams and then he will have outlived his usefulness. Don't be surprised if that happens this year.

Doing my Capt Obvious imitation, remember Jarrett Bush? Unless you want to really stretch the definition of eventually...

Jarrett Bush has some capability at corner. His special teams contributions add to his value. Janis meanwhile has only special teams value at this point. If we get another WR who's willing to make plays on special teams AND can make plays on offense, he's the first one out the door if you ask me.

Bush was a special teams player first and a corner as a last resort. He didn't have value as a corner and wouldn't have made the team if he didn't play special teams.

It's kind of silly to say Janis can't make plays on offense when he made more in 1 game than Bush would in a season. Janis can make plays on special teams and offense. That's not the problem.

I don't think there are many of us who would give Janis a high probability of making the 53 man roster, if it was based solely on what he has done at WR. But unless his Special Teams play shows a drop off, I think he is a safe bet to make the roster based solely on his play at gunner last year.

It was really only the stats he racked up during the AZ game that even have people talking about him as a WR.

Jarrett Bush played more meaningful snaps at cb/s than Janis has at wr and it isn't even close. The person who said Janis did more in the Arizona game than Bush did in his career couldn't be more wrong. Bush has as many regular season interceptions as Janis does catches. Bush also was huge in our Super Bowl win with 5 tackles and pick. Come to think of it Jarrett Bush may be a good comparison for Janis. STs player forced into duty by injury and showed up big in a playoff game.

He also had a lot longer career to make those plays. Yes he did come up big in SB45 which I forgot about.

Also I never said Bush hasn't played more meaningful snaps. That's kind of obvious. He also proved himself as a very last resort CB over the years, not a playmaker. I said Janis had made more plays .

Not sure how two tds trumps 5 ints in terms of playmaking

While I have my doubts about Janis I'm not real sure I wouldn't give him a shot at the roster based on his WR skills. Remember, this guy came from a tiny school with very little competition. It was always known that it might take him a while to adapt to the NFL and if those games last year were a sign of things clicking then he could very well be making the jump to good NFL receiver. Sad part is that, if he does continue to develop, the Packers will have taught him to play WR only to see him leave for a large contract to another team with more cap room.

What I was saying was, in terms of athletic playmaking, something which Janis showed vs. Arizona, Bush has never done something at the level of going up for a desperation heave, and stealing it between 2 defenders, one being one of the best corners in the league.

I'm not arguing that Bush obviously has had a more successful career (so far) just in terms of longitivity. My argument is against the idea that Janis can't make plays on offense. No, Janis can make plays on offense. He's plenty strong and athletic enough and he's shown in his own actual extended opportunity that he can make plays. His problem is the mental part of the game and fundamentals, it's not that he can't make a play.

Keep in mind Janis "made plays" doing the only thing he knows how to do on a football field, run in a straight line and jump up and get it. Had Janis made that play on a smash route with a toe drag in the corner of the endzone, or made a diving grab off a dig route between a safety and a linebacker in coverage. I might respect him more. But at the end of the day he's still just a one trick pony who doesn't add much value to the offense.

I agree but it seems to me a lot of people are ready to elevate him as high as #3 based on what he has done at WR.

I guess that if Janis continues to perform at the same level as during the Arizona playoff game, which is a huge question mark, the Packers would find a way to re-sign him after the 2017 season.

There´s absolutely no doubt that before his breakout performance at Arizona Janis was a one trick pony only. During that game he caught some balls running some other, crisp routes aside of a go as well though. Hopefully he can continue to do so.

If I remember correctly, and it's certainly possible that I'm wrong, the INT was one of those where he had to catch it as a matter of self-preservation. Offsetting that was the much more typical demonstration of his CB talent at the end of the first half, giving up a TD in the "where did he do, where did he go?" manner. Did I expect him to be even worse? Sure. But that was just a part of the 2010 Cinderella story - guys like Zombo, Chillar, and Peprah having a (their only) career year, with Bush having a career game. I'm sure we could trade anecdotal evidence either way for a long time, but I think a review of all the Packer forums during Bush's tenure would reveal just what we thought of him as a DB.

While I agree that Bush was a below average cornerback you should give him credit for his interception in Super Bowl XLV. He read the play perfectly and stepped in front of the receiver intercepting the ball. Nice play.

What is the correct ratio?

If a db has more picks in the regular season than a guy has catches he probably had more impact plays.

Wimm was right about his int. It was a very good play by a below average cb. Similar to Janis hail Mary. Not sure how someone can take away from an interview for being lucky but promote Janis whose two big catches came on hail Mary type throws.

MM yesterday :

"Jeff Janis is doing a lot of good things. He just needs to continue to progress through the fundamentals of the position. Special teams he had an excellent year last year, graded out as one of our top players. I’d like to see him take that same step as a wide receiver."

While I'd agree those looking for huge things out of Janis this year need to ' pump the brakes' a bit, I'd also say those on the other end of the spectrum, the silly statements like What has he been doing all offseason, cut him before the HOF game, don't be surprised if Geronimo Allison beats him out, etc. etc, should do the same. Works both ways.

All those comments were from one poster. The other end of the spectrum outside of that one poster is Janis has only had one good game and couldn't see the field bc he didn't run the right routes.

I don't post much...mostly lurking but it's good to hear that he caught the Hail Mary. My question is if he is still struggling to feel comfortable running routes then maybe Luke Getsy should spend some more 1:1 time with him.

The problem is that outside of one poster the rest of us simply want to see it done in more than one game on more than two plays that are apart of nobodies offense before we start proclaiming Janis as a potential Jordy 2.0 (Which is something that has been said more than once by more than a single poster)

Assuming everyone stays healthy and his STs play doesn't fall off I agree he's a great bet to make the 53 but I still fail to see how a guy that by all accounts was effectively rated as our 7th best recievers by the coaching staff last year is somehow this great bet to move up the depth chart over the guys ahead of him based on the logic that he's better suited for the outside than others ahead of him, when the coaches literally felt more comfortable playing EVERY WR on the roster ahead of him on the outside, and all this is based off of two huge catches on two plays that like I said aren't exactly staples of an NFL offense.

I think he could potentially be a solid #4 this year if things start clicking for him but assuming Adams and Montgomery stay healthy there's little imperical evidence to suggest that he'll move over either of them on the depth chart in any fashion other than "he's big and he runs fast". Two points that get way over blown when it comes to young prospects which is ironic because all I ever hear from fans is that they think NFL teams put to much stock into measurables when the combine hits but here in this discussion it's used as a HUGE point in his favor when the other evidence has shown that he's just not a good receiver yet.

He's got potential. But when I see posts like Jordy 2.0 that's where most of us are saying pump the breaks
