From 2004-2012 the Steelers had a combined five starts from rookies on defense. Packers have had 25 in the last two years alone.

Fact is that if the Packers continue to value youth over experience, you're going to get communication issues in ANY defense. Any defense simple enough for the number of young players we have to run smoothly will get eaten up by offenses.

I was all set to finally concede that the knock on Capers has come true once again. But this makes so much sense that my brain practically exploded reading it because i didn't realize it on my own!

So they were avg in points given up, 1st in the league in turnovers by a WIDE margin, and a tough defense to pass against.

I wouldn't call being tied with the Niners for first leading the league by a wide margin, but maybe that's just me.

And they lead the league in turnovers by a wide margin, were a tough defense to effectively pass on, and were middle of the league in points. I stand by that they were not the worst defense in the league contrary to what sportscenter tells fans

Maybe not but we are pretty bad. Have been for about three yrs. If the Packers had a top 10 defense this team would be a 2 maybe 3 loss team ant the most.

The 2011 team gave up more than 30 points four times in the regular season, all wins for the Packers. That's clearly on the offense.

I personally expect to give up 30 to drew Brees. And the lions game we rested our best defensive players.

You cannot rely on turnovers as a means to consistently win games. Some teams just don't make mistakes. the only true way to stop a team is from good pressure, and good tackling and not allowing any or as little as possible YAC.

If they don't move the ball, they can't score. Its really that simple.

When the turnovers don't happen, the defence has been awful. Now granted Capers is working with a lot of young players, and maybe his system just doesn't fit. So that is either him not adjusting to what he has to work with, or Ted not giving Capers the players he needs. Either way the defence is bad and has been for 3 straight seasons.

In the 23 regular season road games since that meeting the Saints have scored 30+ points only five times.

I would have to disagree. Altho we need to add a few more playmakers on defense if Rob Ryan can take a terrible saints defense (worse then ours last yr) and turn it into a top five defense (4) with virtually the SAME players minus a couple?? then it's either Capers?? or the scheme which still points to Capers because it's his scheme. We don't have a roster full of all pro guy's on defense but neither do the Saints and they have made a MAJOR improvement.

How has their health been? How many games have the starters missed. They have more talent on that D than us at the moment. Some players need to make the jump. Hayward could be a top 5 corner next season and that would be great for our overall D

Mmmm I don't think I said that but anyways. I think 560 pts Scored had a lot to do with it.
Which the offense greatly benefited from all those INTs. Without that crazy #, they wouldn't score as many points

Sigh... This keeps getting repeated by the espn sportscenter crowd but it's woefully inaccurate. If you judge defenses solely on yards, sure, they had the most. But that's a lazy and ignorant way to judge a defense. I think points are a better judgement of a defense.
So who cares if the other teams is owning the ball and keeping Rodgers on the bench?????? If The packers offense wasnt the beast it was opposing teams would of had the ball for 40 out of 60mins.

Or if the D could stop the other team maybe the Packers score even more??? How many times was the field flipped by the inability of that d to get a stop?

No, turnovers would be key for scoring. You know, field position and all. As well as time.

They gave up a lot of empty yards. This why yards are such a bad indicator of a defense.... But that's obvious

I don't even watch Sports center. I watch the games and come up with my own opinion.

Its not empty yards when the field gets flipped Its called field position.

I'm happy for you that you don't watch SC.

It's empty yards if you don't score, but call it what you'd like. Potato potato

I used to to buy into the whole injury this injury that hooblah but the team that one the SB was injury riddled to. Injuries are apart of the game and the great defenses can overcome the injuries...the 2010 defense did. Cullen Jenkins, Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, and Desmond Bishop aren't coming back. I said this before and i'll say it agin..this team needs a playmaker or two at every level. Jenkins and Raji held down the d-line, Matthews held down the backers, and Woodson and Collins held it down in the secondary. We don't have a stud on the d-line, the backers don't have a stud without Matthews being hurt so much, and Shields is on his way but not there yet so the secondary is lacking "star" power as well.

I'm not trying to be a smart alec here okay:
In all of my years being involved with football, as a player and as a fan, I have never heard the term "empty yards".
Please explain.

You drive down the field for 80 yards and throw a pick. Those yards look good and all on stats but when they don't account for points they are "empty". It's something to take into account when comparing teams. The most effective offense is usually the one who takes the least amount of yards per point scored.

The saints and the lions might both have 5,000 yrd QBs but one is going to score a lot more points, that team is more effective, less empty yards.

Thank you.
I understand the concept, just never heard it put that way before.

Thats all well and good but without the turnovers, the defence was awful. When you need to rely on turnovers to consider your defence good, there is a problem. Stopping a team from moving the ball is more important, or getting a stop on 3rd down. The defence was terrible at doing that. I don't think anyone can argue that.

there is nothing wrong with getting turnovers, it helps a lot. However when those turnovers aren't produced the defence cannot stop anyone. This was proven the last 2 years.

I don't think we have the talent on defense at the moment to be top 10 no matter who our coordinator is. Well see tho. An offseason can do wonders for a defense
The good news is that recent history has shown that a great offense is more important than a great defense in winning a Super Bowl.

I remember looking at yards by quarter for that team and we gave up more than a third of our yards in the 4th quarter. It was something like 37%. We almost always had huge leads in the 4th quarter. What do you do defensively when you have a huge lead? You overplay the sidelines to keep the other team from stopping the clock and you lure them into the middle of the field where the clock continues to run. That means you're going to give up some meaningless yards but you're going to use up the clock in doing so. We did that game in and game out. So did the Patriots and Saints that year.

I'll just reiterate again that his scheme had little to do with those losses. The DL was the worst that I've ever seen in an NFL game in last year's playoffs. They played a lot better in Week 1 this season but without Burnett it was easy pickin's through the air.

I'm not making excuses overall, but guys need to play better. Much better.
Coaching is not just scheme. Although that is a big part of it, coaching is also about teaching technique, motivation, game planning, and other things.

I love the scheme, I just don't think it is being coached very well. Here is my explanation: Dom may be a coach that shifts his emphasis as he goes along. He is excited and teaching scheme in his first few years. But once they learn it, he shifts to other matters. But they need to keep learning the system. Dom knows the system because he has been using it for 20 season or so, so he forgets that he needs to keep teaching it. Just my theory to explain this continuous pattern.

I believe the talent is there. Players like Hawk, Raji, and Tramon have all played worse than they did in 2010. Even Matthews seems to be less effective when healthy. Players like Perry and Worthy have great skills, but it doesn't really translate to the field. Players like Burnett, Jones, and Wilson all seem good, but don't seem to take the next step to making some impact plays.

Seriously, who is the last defensive player to step up since 2010 and make an impact? Other than rookie CBs, Hyde and Heyward, nobody has stepped up their play.

Just watching them play, there just doesn't seem to be the cohesiveness. I see players out of position, coverage confusion, and other mental miscues. Its the coaches job to have the players in the proper positions and following their assignments.

To me, that is the sniff test and Capers is the source of the stench we all smell.
