Maybe we should ask George Seifert, **** Vermeil or Jimmy Johnson if they'd like to come here while we're at it.

Seriously though, this is one reason I continue to take issue with those who keep on saying Mike McCarthy is automatically gone already. They assume the guy replacing him is going to be a genius, and I'd say he could just as easily be an incompetent buffoon. Upgrading a head coach position is a lot tougher than you think.

Now as I said in another thread, I'm not against holding MM accountable if he fails to get this team on a run starting tomorrow. A loss on Sunday plus having to try and get a win back by traveling across the nation on a short week could easily knock us to 3-6-1 at which point we're unlikely to make a run to the playoffs period. He's definitely going to need to win some games that he'll be in trouble if he doesn't win.

If he gets this team to the playoffs, he's all but guaranteed he'll get another year here. If not, he may very well be gone, but if so, the next guy had better hit the ground running and running fast because he will get absolutely no room, and I mean no room for ******** up from me.

This is a major concern to me also. I don't want to go through the Ray Rhodes/Mike Sherman years again. You don't really know what we might get in a replacement. I like McCarthy, I think he's a good coach, I just wish he would be more open to trying a few new things now and then.

As for Holmgren, no I don't think he'd be tempted to coach the Packers again. He didn't want to stay here when he was here. Aside from him being so old, look at how Jon Gruden is doing after years away from the game. I don't think so.

Even if Holmgren would consider coaching the Packers again the team definitely shouldn't be interested in bringing him back.

this is a funny prop...25 yrs ago yes...now no too old
its true that it probably lies somewhere in the realm of a not very well known young coach laying in the weeds....

It would be nice to have Desmond Howard back--in the same shape as he was in 1997
I was thinking about Desmond Howard today. If they would have had the same kickoff rules they have now back in the '96-'97 season, how would that have affected our Super Bowl run? I think that team would have still won the Super Bowl, but Howard probably wouldn't have gotten the Super Bowl MVP.
And maybe he might have even stayed with the team.

I remember how the team seemed happy he was gone and fans were not exactly sad he left. People have such short memories, or repressed, i'm not certain which it is.

Once fritz shurmur passed away, Holmgren was exposed as an average HC. MM, IMHO, is a better coach.

Maybe we should try and get Gruden from the raiders. He is a fiery leader, was with the Packers, and fun personality who once won a SB.

I, for one, was saddened to see Desmond Howard leave the team. My favorite player at the time. He had an unique way of making things happen on the field. But we can't blame the man for seeking a better situation.

Well damn, you blew my thunder! In keeping with the spirit and gaiety of the thread, I was going to propose Shurmer being brought back, I guess they could just prop his body up right? :coffee:

An improvement over Capers, to be sure, but we need to let Pettine have a fair shot at it.

Agreed and I have been starting to wonder "What will happen to Pettine if MM is fired?" I hope if MM is fired, a new coach will want to retain Pettine. But I can understand a new coach wanting to come in and bring in "his guys" too, especially a DC.

While yesterday gives the Packers and fans some hope, I am not putting much stock in that win due to the fact that Miami came to Green Bay a pretty banged up and not that spectacular of a team even when healthy. Hard to forget the way that the Packers have played up to this point to ignore the fact that something is off and it very well may be time for a new HC. I was optimistic when Philbin was brought back, thinking MM would be less involved in the offense and the offense itself would take on a new look, neither seems to have happened.

Pettine has been a nice change, we aren't seeing the snow ball effect of a few bad plays making the defense completely spiral out that we seemed to see with Capers. I think we see something similar to that happening on the offense and possibly the only way to change that is with a new HC. At minimum, if the Packer front office still thinks MM is a great HC, then let him be just that, strip the play calling from him and bring in a guy that can kick start the offense. Belichick has Josh McDaniels, we need a JM.

Just look back to 2005. In one of Sherman's bright moves, he finally hired Jim Bates to be the DC. The defense improved tremendously but Sherman still was canned with the entire staff. We all know that Bates lost out to McCarthy for the head job (which was still the right move), but MM had the chance to bring Bates back.

I think that fans are driving the MM more than needs to be done, and believe that many will be in meltdown mode when they realize that he is coming back in 2019. I therefore see Pettine here as well.
