I would have been fine with the Packers releasing Matthews to acquire Mack. You have to understand that while it's already extremely difficult to put together a competitve roster with the highest paid player in the league it would be even more challenging while having one of the highest paid defensive players as well.

The Packers are in way more desperate need to add an edge rusher.
So far this season, it doesn’t look like the Packers have any edge rush, period. Yeah they need help at S too, but the edge rusher position is the priority. Unfortunately, that’s very difficult to address mid-season. Then again, it can’t get much worse.

Karl Joseph is rumored to be available from the Raiders (then again, who isn't?). Would be a massive upgrade at SS. Not sure what round pick the Packers might need to give up, but he was the 14th overall pick on 2016 and he's still on a rookie deal. Pretty good, young safety that would address a massive hole on defense.

He’s on the market, and the Cardinals are looking for a trade. This is the shutdown cover man and playmaker we’ve been missing since Charles Woodson was cut. This is the guy we should go all in for. We could use one of our 1st rounders for next year, plus a 3rd or 4th rounder for him. Draft picks are always hit or miss, no matter where they are drafted, and no pick is ever a sure thing. We have the talent and playmaker we need right in front of us, in PP, and I am willing to go all in to get him, while still keeping our picks in a healthy situation to add more depth next spring. Let’s go Gute, we need this guy in green and gold.

What is Peterson’s status? Are the Cards shopping him?

He has requested that he be traded before the deadline next week. He wants out Arizona.
Thanks. Seems like a good time to go after him, assuming he could be had for one of the first round picks AND could be fit under the salary cap. Where there’s a will, there should be a way. No doubt he would be a game changer in the secondary. They don’t come along often, ala Mack.

Would need Tramon to shift to safety, which I think is entirely possible. He has done it before under Pettine

Tramon looks slow a move to safety in place of Brice would be a welcome idea. Add Peterson he's a true number 1 corner. With him king Alexander and jackson the Packers would be in great shape for years

Your logic is based upon the contract Chicago offered Mack and his representatives.
Exactly. And he would have taken less from the Packers? There's no reason to believe that.

I'm fairly confident that after Gutekunst had preliminary discussions with Oakland as to what they were looking for and preliminary discussions with Mack's agent as to what he was looking for, Gutekunst said, "F that." My confidence derives from the cap situation while also giving up those valuable draft picks that Gutekunst would have especially needed after draining the cap.

The idea that the Packers would trade for Mack actually bordered on the absurd.

Wait, didn't we just spend how many high draft picks on CB's? King, Jackson and Alexander are currently not as good as Patrick Peterson, but I would not be in favor of giving up yet another first round pick on even Peterson at this point. I also think the Cardinals would be asking more than that from the Packers, given that their pick probably won't be top 10. A year ago, sure. But the Packers are going to need all the draft picks and $$ they have to shore up other positions. As long as the 3 young guys stay healthy and keep developing, the CB position should be well taken care of for the next 3-4 years.

The only enticing part of PP for me is his contract. $5.8M for the balance of this year, $11M in 2019 and 12.050M in 2020. Also, who knows if PP won't go the way of some of the other players in the NFL and demand his contract be renegotiated before he plays.

Joseph has been a major disappointment since being drafted by the Raiders in the first round in 2016. The Packers shouldn't be interested in him.

Peterson would currently present an upgrade at cornerback but with the Packers having just spent their first and second rounder on the position Gutekunst shouldn't give up even more draft picks to acquire him. The team should be fine with Alexander, Jackson and King forming the nucleus moving forward.

Seems like a good time to go after him, assuming he could be had for one of the first round picks AND could be fit under the salary cap.

The Packers would be left with approximately $650K of cap space by acquiring Peterson.

Williams isn't fast enough to play single high safety at this point of his career anymore.

The only enticing part of PP for me is his contract. $5.8M for the balance of this year, $11M in 2019 and 12.050M in 2020.

FWIW Peterson would count $6.47 million towards the Packers cap for the rest of this season.

If Dallas was willing to give up a first rounder for Amari Cooper, I feel like the market is hot right now. What would a team like the Bills, Eagles or Miami give up for Randall Cobb or Geronimo Allison? If we could get a first for either of those guys, with the way the rookies are playing, would be a massive win for us. Also, Jake Kumerow will be coming back soon.

There's no way another team gives up a first round pick for a rental player like Cobb or a former undrafted free agent like Allison.

While the 3 young guys look promising there is no gurantee that's the way it turns out in 3 years. Sure they could all be all pros by then but they could also be out of the league. You never know with Peterson you get a proven top 5 NFL corner and you get him for 2.5 seasons at a bargain price. Even for a first round pick it's well worth the price. Especially when you consider that first is very likely to be at the bottom of the round

Mack didn’t trade himself. The Raiders did. And Mack sat out over money, he wasn’t coming back for less. Why do people think they do this for any other reason than to be compensated? a first for Cobb? He hasn't been on the field since what, week 2? He was hurt a lot last year and the season before he didn't get healthy until pretty much playoff time. I wouldn't give a 5th for him. Players who can't play aren't any good no matter how high their ceiling.

I would prefer Gutekunst to spend the cap space on a position in more dire need of improvement. Edge rusher and free safety come to my mind.

For me, Chandler Jones and Landon Collins are the two most intriguing trade options. However I don't feel that the Packers will make any major moves as I feel they have a long-term plan in place period a big trade now would seem to change that to an all-or-nothing move.

could we even fit Chandler Jones under our cap? I'd like him too, but if Peterson only leaves us 600K in space, I have to imagine Jones eats that up.

I am probably guilty of this as well but I find the following homer-isms amusing:
  1. Packer players are highly coveted by other teams and their trade value is astronomical.
  2. The overpaid contracts of Packer players will be ignored by other teams in a trade.
  3. Star players from other teams will be traded to the Packers for far less than they are worth.
  4. Star players from other teams will no doubt want to be a Packer and play for less.

I’m at a point now where I’d rather them keep the two #1’s and build off these moves.

Landon Collins replaces HAHA
Taylor Lewan replaces Bryan Bulaga at RT
Muhammad Wilkerson resigned
Brandon Cooks- An actual deep threat

Draft picks : 1st two Rounds:
1st Rd. Packers trade Both picks in the first, and Dashawn Kizer to the New York Giants to
Move up and take Nick Bosa DE/OLB -Ohio State

2nd Rd. Beau Benzschwabel OG-Wisconsin

It probably won’t happen like this..but man this roster looks great all of a sudden.

Lewan and Cooks are both signed through 2023 with their respective teams.
