That decent draft pick will most likely not net a player of Ridley's caliber and (this is what New England tends to do really well) if you can rehab Ridley's image with an actual good QB then you can probably trade him away and more than make back what you gave up to get him. Just a thought, again, WR isn't the main flaw on this team, but the Packers passed on trading for a guy who would have turned their biggest flaw into a strength (Mack) so trying to build up the passing game might help the team compensate. Maybe.

The Packers could most likely draft a receiver as talented as Cooper with their first round pick in 2019 but wouldn't have to pay him even close to $14 million next season. They should definitely pass on him.

Boomer Esiason thinks Peterson's Cardinal teammate Chandler Jones is going to the Jets. I'm all for us jumping in front of the Jets and throwing the Saints 1st round pick to get him. It's not like we're going to need to extend anybody from the 2014-2016 draft classes anyway.

Chandler Jones is an intriguing player but once again the Packers currently wouldn't be able to fit his deal under the cap for this season without making a corresponding move.

The Packers definitely have to re-sign Clark at some point.

Anyone who can get any pressure on the QB on his own

Shane Ray from the Denver Broncos. People thought I was crazy for floating that out there this past spring, but he does fulfill a need. I actually think this defense has potential. The CB play is much better than last season, and consistent pressure from the front 7 could make a huge difference.

If the Packers' FO are serious about wanting to content this season, I think they have to at least look into every potential pass rusher that could be available. Irvin, Jones, Ray, Sheard, Beasley, Hughes... leave no stone unturned. Maybe there is no feasible deal to be had, but I hope they're trying.

It would have been crazy to acquire Ray for a first round pick as you suggested this offseason. In addition I'm not convinced he would present a decent upgrade over the pass rushers currently on the roster.

While I agree trading a first round pick for Shane Ray was crazy, I still think trading for Shane Ray is worth the intrigue. I disagree with your stance that Ray isn't an upgrade over GB's current pass rushers on the roster...he is. Stats can be misleading. With Von Miller and Bradley Chubb on the roster, the opportunity for Shane Ray isn't there. Filling a need for Green Bay, while at a prorated price point, Ray would get plenty opportunities to produce. Once trading for him, at worst Green Bay would receive a mid round compensatory pick, which is equal value based on a non-crazy swap of a fourth or fifth round pick for his services. If he does produce, Green Bay would be in the driver's seat for a decent contract offer; preferably a one-year contract with incentives.

Ray has had every opportunity to earn more playing time early in his career with the Broncos but didn't perform up to expectations. While he might turn out to be a small upgrade over the pass rushers currently on the roster I would prefer Gutekunst to improve the position with a more established player.

Yet the problem with an established player is that we wouldn't be able to squeeze him under the cap. He's a young guy. If we can get him for a 4th or later, I'm all for bringing him in and compete for some snaps. That probably won't be so hard given how average our starters have been playing. Furthermore Perry or Matthews is bound to go down at some point this season, and I'm sure nobody would want to see Fackrell starting.

It's true the Packers could easily fit Ray under the cap. In my opinion he doesn't present a significant upgrade over Gilbert and Fackrell though.

It would appear Gutekunst has other ideas:

From Demovsky on 10/17:

Packers workouts: S Ibraheim Campbell (former 4th round pick, Browns) S Eddie Pleasant (undrafted, 76 career games, Texans) DT Vincent Valentine (former 3rd round pick, Patriots) RB Dan Vitale (former 6th round pick, Bucs) TE Clive Walford (former 3rd round pick, Raiders)

Gute had his chance with Khalil Mack. How much more of an established player could you have gotten? Green Bay isn't first on many player's lists as far as unrestricted free agency, save Reggie White. To get an established player, trades must be made. Players currently on the roster may have to go. Personally, I think the only players that are unmovable, are the ones producing this season at their respective positions. Anyone else can go.

It would have been close to impossible for the Packers to fit Mack under the salary cap.

I disagree. Nothing is impossible with a salary cap. Giving up 1st rounders and CM3 along with Cobb would've been feasible. Getting a deal done with Mack could've been done. However, Green Bay wasn't agressive enough.

and someone would have wanted them, why do you think all these teams are suddenly wanting to take on players and contracts we want to get rid of. Green Bay wasn't aggressive enough? LOL I think it's more along the lines of, other teams aren't as dumb as you'd like them to be and thankfully neither is our's.

I don’t think it’s crazy, but I’ve been encouraged by MVS and EQ on the field and wouldn’t want a veteran coming in to take snaps away from them— especially as neither Cobb nor Allison are dealing with issues that will keep them out several weeks.

Exactly. Dez is old and injury prone. MVS deserves a LOT of extra playing time. He’s tall, he’s fast, and he can run like a gazelle. I think he has a chance of becoming something really great. Our offense is going to get better With the players we have. We need to upgrade our o line, But I like what we have in position players. Aaron Jones needs to get the ball at least 15 to 18 times a game, period. I would honestly like him to get the ball more, but I’m trying to be realistic with our head coach in mind. It is our defense that needs an upgrade. We need to look for trade at safety and defensive end. I think our offense is already starting to look pretty good. We just need to give the rock to Aaron Jones more. If we do that, the sky is the limit for this offense.

Think so? I'd say holding onto players well past their prime and not producing to the standards of their contracts are dumb. Fans that keep waiting until next year and are dependent on the next draft are dumb. Wishful thinking is foolish. Complancy is weakness. Hesitation is fatal. Bold moves are needed for this organization. We've been spoiled by nearly 30 years and elite play @ QB. It's rare, and we're wasting window after window of getting rings.

I would have been fine with the Packers releasing Matthews to acquire Mack. You have to understand that while it's already extremely difficult to put together a competitve roster with the highest paid player in the league it would be even more challenging while having one of the highest paid defensive players as well.

We need to look for trade at safety and defensive end.

The Packers are in way more desperate need to add an edge rusher.

Uh huh. What about next season? Mack's cap number for 2019 is $22.3 mil. Current cap commitments for 2019 would be about $172.5 mil, before having replaced or resigned any of these guys:

So, you would press against the cap before the season even started while trading away first round picks? That was never going to happen.

Mack would have been the kind of silver bullet by which you would have shot yourself in the foot.

I just joined the forum mainly to read/comment on this thread, and this forum is awesome. I was excited this pre-season when we went out and acquired Jimmy Graham, thinking there may be some even bigger moves coming later. especially w/ the Mack chatter, I was checking updates every 30 mins to an hour on that.

I am wondering what everyone's gut feeling is on Packers acquiring a bigger name prior to deadline either on defense or offense, lets say over/under 50%; if you take the over who do you think they SHOULD get it and why, what acquisition benefits the team more, an edge rusher on D or additional WR/RB to help offense? Or some other position? Lot of questions here, if you don't think they get anyone, what do you think the reasoning behind that would be?

Welcome aboard. Sometimes it pays to read the previous 4-6 pages of threads before posting questions as the answers to your queries are in there.
My take? Packers don't have cap space to take on any big names. They'd need a sucker another team to take on enough contract value to make room. At this point of the season, the big name FA's are still available for a reason. GB isn't the only team not starting Probowlers at all 28 slots.
You specifically asked: "what acquisition benefits the team more, an edge rusher on D or additional WR/RB to help offense?" What makes you think a big name WR/RB would help? We have 4-6 very young WRs rounding into form along with two highly compensated seasoned vets in their prime. It would take an acquired "big name" some time to learn the playbook and get Aaron's trust without being here for camp. It's taken Jimmy G until this past game to look like the stud everyone assumed we got. {I expect more of this from him going forward.} GB has two decent 2nd year RBs that don't get enough carries as it is. Where would the snaps and touches come from for said acquisition and what would be the $$$/touch?

When I said defensive end, I meant edge rusher. Sorry. Words are hard for me today.

I highly doubt the Packers will be able to acquire a big name before the trade deadline as they have only limited cap space to work with. The team is definitely in more dire need of improvement at edge rusher than on offense.

Your logic is based upon the contract Chicago offered Mack and his representatives. The key factors is this:

The rookie scale contract for Trubisky, which means more money for Mack.

It may take a couple years for Trubisky to develop into an elite NFL QB, I remain skeptical.

However, what is unknown, if presented with the opportunity; would Khalil Mack have accepted a trade to Green Bay? Would he have sacrificed 5-6 million dollars for a legitimate shot at a championship window?

Playing on the same team as a legitimate Top 5 QB in NFL history?

I think if Green Bay made a worthwhile offer to Oakland to secure the acquisition of Mack, both sides would've agreed to a beneficial contract.

Also, everyone (in a contract year) could've been let go on the defensive side of the ball after this season. Mack is a foundation player. The players with potential are all on rookie deals. Young, hungry, and attentive defense.

Purge the vets that were no longer worthy of their deals, simple as that. There are several teams that would've taken some of the vets off this roster.

Of course it's un(mc)knowable, but I have zero doubts in my own mind when I give the opinion that Mack would never have done that. The whole reason he wanted out of Oakland was that they weren't willing to pay him the going rate for a player of his position and quality.
