Studs and duds Ram game

The offensive line did a great job in pass protection in my opinion against a very talented Rams defensive line but was terrible in run blocking. Pur running backs were only able to gain a total of 8 yards before contact on 19 runs.

Duds according to Rodgers, the WR's:

"We've got to run routes a little bit better," Rodgers said. "We've got to be able to get open outside better. Obviously, I've got to throw it better than I did today and clean some of those things up."

Agreed. I think Nelsons presence not only down the field but also on the perimeter has been sorely missed the last couple weeks.

Start the broken record again. Anyways Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb are both slot specialists. Cobb has always looked funny catching on the sidelines where he doesn't seem to have much feel or much in the way of instincts. Monty has shown that he's not one for jump balls or tracking anything over his head. We only have one true + sideline/perimeter receiver in the offense right now in the personage of James Jones. Once we get Davante Adams back and healthy we should be good to go.

Speaking of receiver talent I bet we could get Greg Jennings back for cheap.

Another Dud IMO: Jeff Janis on his screw up on the punt team. Masthay actually punted the ball nearly perfectly - it looked to me like the ball may have come to rest inside the 5 yard line by itself. Janis' first contact with the ball was to push it toward the EZ - that's exactly the wrong instinct. In that situation tap the ball lightly towards the field before rolling into the EZ. Not a huge deal but I would have liked to see the D against the Rams' O at their 2-yard line (or so).
I'm no fan of Janis, to be sure, but looking at the replay a dozen times, Janis was not pushing the ball toward the end zone on purpose. It looks to me that in the split second between deciding to gather in the ball with right arm and the ball taking a second sideways bounce he started to withdraw his right hand but the ball hit it anyway. It's unfortunate he did not make the play, but in the context of bouncing punts which have a habit of going every which way, I find it a stretch to think his instincts should have told him in advance that second bounce would go sideways.

I've only watched the play twice but IMO his instincts were wrong on the play. Running full speed with the ball inside the 5-yard line he should not have considered 'gathering the ball with his right arm' - he should have avoided the ball except to tap it toward the field.

Janis should just have let the ball bounce as it would have most likely stopped or been picked up by a teammate not running at full speed inside the 5.

He was already into his slide on the first bounce with the ball moving away from him. The only way he could have tapped the ball back into the field is if he backhanded it with the right hand, which is hardly an instinctual or reliable way to go about it. The first instinct on the first sideways bounce was to gather it in, which looks right. The second instinct on the second sideways bounce was to let it go...that looks right having no idea what it would have done on the next bounce.

Being 1/100 of second slow in withdrawing his hand on the second bounce is hardly worthy of a "dud".

After watching the replay several times I don't see any motion by Janis trying to withdraw his hand.

Studs: defense. They gave up some chunk yards but they came to play. Our secondary is coming along nicely with the young guys. Clay is the best lb in the league right now.

Duds: running game and offense. Bak is the worse starting left tackle in the league and if Bulaga doesn't replace him once he's healthy gotta find someone else.

I see it. It's when he stopped trying to draw the ball in on the second sideways bounce.

The flaw in the argument against Janis on this play is in the assumption that the next bounce after the first sideways bounce would also be sideways. There is no way to know that until it happens.

The dud in the ensuing drive that resulted in that nifty Austin TD was not that the Rams started at the 20 instead of the 3; it was Clinton-Dix letting Cook get behind him and giving up a 30 yard interference penalty. That the Janis play would be highlighted whereas the interference call goes unmentioned strikes me as unjustifiably kicking a disappointing player when he'd down.

To this point in the game, which is as far as I've gotten so far, it looks to me like Hyde is having a pretty good game at SS. The pick was a gift, but that tackle on Gurley on the play prior to the Austin TD was quite something even if it went for naught.

I don't consider Janis a dud because of this play, there's no doubt in my mind he made a mistake on it though.

I'm convinced there aren't any plans to move Bulaga to the left side. Most likely there aren't any free agents available who would present an upgrade at the position.

Bakh has been the weak point of the offensive line to be sure, but worst starting LT in the league? Do we not remember Marshall Newhouse? Or God Bless his leg Derek Sherrod? It could be a lot worse..

It has nothing to do with the next bounce - the flaw in your argument is not considering what Janis should have done which is to pass by the ball keeping it on his right - twisting his body if necessary - and using his left hand to tap the ball back. His right hand or arm shouldn't have been in position to touch the ball. Or avoid touching the ball.

Bakhtiari is probably not the worst starting left tackle in the league right now but he's for sure near the bottom of the positional ranking.

Bear in mind that we do not scheme a lot of help towards Bakh. So how do you compare him to other LTs who maybe have guard help slid in their direction? Or frequent chips from the backs?

Again, you're assuming in advance what the next bounce was going to do. It could have flipped right over him or to his left had he tried to roll right and block it instead of trying to gather it on the first bounce. The idea that a gunner going full speed should not try to cover a bouncing ball inside the 5 as a first instinct strikes me as 20/20 hindsight.

Again, I'm not assuming in advance what the next bounce was going to do. If a gunner going full speed tries to cover a ball inside the five tries to cover the ball it's very likely his momentum will take him into the EZ - that's why his goal should be to tap it backwards, not take it into the EZ.
