He made the decision/choice to get into a profession where for a few weeks a year your going to miss important events in life. It’s a choice like joining the military where you know when getting into it, that it can happen. It’s sad, but at the same time it doesn’t bother me. He could have chose a different job.

Well, there's no way to be sure the Packers actually can afford to go without Scott tonight. As HRE pointed out, what happens if Crosby misses a potential game winning field goal because of a bad hold by a punter that hasn't even practiced with the team???
Then the Packers back-up holder needs more practice with the kicker. If Scott got taken out on a roughing the punter or tackling the holder earlier in the game, you'd have the same situation. Next man up.
Scott asked or the team was aware and offered for him to be at the maternity ward today / this weekend. There may be serious complications involved which is why this was not widely disseminated. Players missing games for "family reasons" happen fairly often across the league. Priorities. No one on their deathbed ever said "I wish I had spent more time at work" or so I've heard.

With limited practice time during the season it's close to impossible to have the backup holder take a ton of snaps with the kicker.

While players around the league miss practice because of personal reasons it's rare they end up being granted a leave for regular season games because of it.

None of this will matter when Scott plays tonight.

Wimm will find something else to ***** about though, no doubt.

$37,000 for a couple days work assuming he's getting the 3rd year minimum. I'm sure Kaser is not happy about not having a full time job, but that's not bad for getting picked up at the corner for some day labor.

37k is more than what I make in a year. So going to work for few hours doing couple of punts sounds like an great gig.

Hopefully he only gets to put on the uniform but is not needed to punt. Don't know if he'll be the holder.

Sounds like he's also a kickoff specialist. Maybe he's particularly good at lofting the ball high and dropping it at the goal line with the intent of giving the Patriots a longer field. Or maybe McCarthy is anticipating a lot of FG attempts and doesn't want MC kicking off or something.

As opposed to familial ones?
I'll put it to you this way.

For the first 2.999,970 years of human and pre-human history, it wasn't the case. When the mastadons were migrating dad didn't stay home; he sharpened his spear and got to hoofing it with his fellow hunters.

The point being, this business of absolutely having to be present at the birth of child is a post-modern, first world concoction. Sure, that's great if your job does not demand your presense.

And quite frankly, this male attentiveness has not lowered the divorce rate. And if at some future date the kid whimpers to his therapist that his dad wasn't there and doesn't love him, he (and maybe dad) have much bigger issues than what happened on the fateful day.

Your older than I thought .

Anyway kudos to the Packers were taking steps necessary for something so important .

Another way to look at this....would you want JK Scott playing tonight, knowing and thinking about his wife being in labor with potential complications? You think his head will be fully in the game? I love football....but if that's my wife and the organization gives me the choice.....I'm watching a baby being delivered, not a football.

There were articles out there that Scott's wife was due in November. Technically, the Packers couldn't say it is because Scott's wife is expecting or due or whatever given health care laws. You'd think one of the Packers writers (or any writer) would try to figure it out on their own since it is odd there would be 2 punters on a team.

What would health care laws have to do with it? Is it a big secret that she is pregnant or something.

Did I break the law when I told my sister that a girl she used to work with was pregnant.

Laws or not, it’s just poor taste for an employer to publicaly comment on private lives. So they didn’t.

As I was the only one criticizing the decision you should have addressed the last sentence directly at me. You don't know anything about me though therefore it might be smart to restrain from analyzing another person based on actions on a message forum.

NFL players are paid a handsome amount of money to play a game 16 times a year. I'm sorry that I don't feel bad for them if they happen to miss other events in their life because of it.

And yet NO ONE would have criticized Brett Favre for missing the Raiders game after his father passed away.

I don't disagree but I wasn't the one to bring up laws. I was simply asking why the laws would prevent the Packers from saying something. Maybe they do, I don't know. Being in poor taste is different than being against the law.

I mean, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t plan on watching the Packers punt much tonight. Just saying.

So you are just going top turn the TV off after every failed third down conversion?

You're probably as young as I thought.
You know what else is a post modern concoction? Football :)

I don’t expect you to understand, and it’s ok. But being there for my wife during labor was about more than avoiding therapy sessions with my future snowflakes.

And I’d gladly pick up any slack a co-worker left by being there. We’re different, you think you swing a bigger hammer or something?

Video clip on Twitter of the Packers arriving at Gillette showed Scott getting off the bus.

I for one am capable of swinging a sledge hammer. I’m much more proficient with a ball peen though.

Fwiw, I’m not very old. I’m 29...a spring chicken, despite what my creaking joints tell me.

My father is a gruff old man, who despite being near his 70’s, is still capable of outworking men half his age, including me. We farm, and we’ve had this talk before, that whether it’s plsnuing time or harvest time, if my wife is giving birth he demands that I be there for it. Some things are more important than work, no matter what line of work you’re in.
