He is going to be going to a crap team at this rate though.
So it goes.
He has a ring, he's not playing for the Hall of Fame, he presumably wants to play as a starter, get paid as such, and he evidently wants to maximize his earnings as his career winds down. It's not hard to figure.
If the Packer offer was light on guarantees, which I would surmise to be the case given the reported term and the amount, he might not have a fuzzy feeling his job would be secure anyway.
Given the low Williams offer and zero Thompson activity in FA, it's looking more and more as if the team is comfortable with Hayward taking over cover corner. Again, given the low offer, Williams is not seen a core player and even if he came back he'd likely be in a competitive position with Hayward (and maybe even a day 1 or day 2 pick to boot). He might even get plugged into the nickel role. That prospect might not be appealing.
I'm seeing no reports of Thompson taking any meetings so far as in past years. In the past, Thompson's brought in guys like Steven Jackson and Chris Canty for meetings, seasoned vets of some accomplishment with some tread still on the tires, at a time when they would have filled positions of need. Not so far this year.
Speaking of Canty, he's a free agent, and if memory serves Thompson talked to him both times he was a FA, after 2008 and 2012. He clearly liked the player as recently as 2013. Without Guion playing some DE in base, there's no strong side DE run defender on the roster. I think we can all agree Datone Jones has been disappointing in that role. Boyd? Ho hum.
Thompson throwing a somewhat better than minimum vet contract on the table for Canty for at least a season or two of depth is the kind of deal I'd expect him to make in free agency, though this particular deal is for illustration purposes only.
Teams are about done shaking their overpriced and unaffordable players out of their rosters. It was on this date last year that Peppers was signed, about a week after being cut loose by Chicago. Time is expiring.
