Lenzy Pipkins got cut by the Colts to make room for an extra TE (Jack Doyle probably won’t play tomorrow).

With Josh Jones being back, I’d happily see them cut Raven Greene and bring back Pipkins for the CB depth. You can’t ask for a much better in-season option than that at this point. It would help them through this spell with King being out and House being dinged up.

Apples and oranges? Virtually every player transaction is a crapshoot, but how much is being risked with Gordon?

Good point and one that Belichick seems to measure well. Now maybe picking up certain players isn't good for team chemistry, but that is tough variable for us the fans to measure.

It is tough. If I’m speculating, my guess is that coaches are concerned about how it will affect team morale. Not that guys would somehow “catch” Gordon’s substance abuse issues, but that there could be resentment of a guy coming in who has been kind of a circus and playing ahead of players that have been working their butts off for weeks. But you’re right, in that the real dynamics are unknowable.

I have never read anything where anyone has ever said anything about him being a bad team mate or anything other than a team player. There is the danger as Dantes says of some sort of resentment if he is perceived to be getting preferential treatment but I think most of these players understand the politics of football and what kind of preferential treatment talent brings. I also think most of them understand addictions and can empathize with him. In many cases if that sort of resentment is present it reflects worse on the person harboring it than the person it is directed toward.

On the other hand, with the Patriots I don't think anyone is really handed anything and the players know that. Brady and Gronk might be given a bit of leeway here and there but even guys like Gordon with all his potential and talent will have to work their butts off if they want to stick around.

To me signing Josh Gordon is a very low risk, potentially very high reward move. Maybe not every team/GM/Coach could pull it off but I think BB can.

Yeah, again, I’m just spit balling. I can’t begin to have to real insight on locker room culture. I just have heard coaches make comments to the effect that you want to create a culture that rewards hard work, commitment, and dedication. So maybe bringing in a guy known for the opposite of those things (at least the last two), could send the wrong message. But at the same time, I see what you mean about it being low risk, high reward for a coach like Billy Belly.

I’d take Pipkins over House anyway. House was never a great corner, and he’s lost more than a step or two. I get the “veteran presence” logic on such a young secondary, but they have the capable T Williams for that.

The Patriots traded for Gordon, therefore inheriting his current contract which will result in him being a restricted free agent at the end of this year. If Belichick decides to tender him next offseason they will at least get a second round pick in return if another team signs him.

In my opinion improvement at safety needs to be the top priority this season.
The Safety group really is weak this year, and I haven’t seen a lot of press on it. Brice made a big mistake against the Vikes, and HHCD is looking more and more like “just a guy”. Maybe they can talk the rebuilding Seahawks to trade Thomas for a second round pick. I don’t know what the answer is, but S is the weakest link in the D, and I mean the entire group. The OLB group certainly isn’t great either, but you can only plug so many holes.

House outplayed Pipkins in camp, which is why he was dealt. I think he’s a strong option as a 5th corner. He’s never been consistent, but what do you expect out of a guy that far down the depth chart?

But Pipkins would be a nice pick up while they’re a little banged up at the spot. He knows the defense.

Pipkins might be a smart short-term replacement with the Packers currently having only four healthy cornerbacks because he has knowledge of the system.

House is a more talented cornerback than Pipkins. Once again, it's unrealistic to expect having a better option than him fifth on the depth chart.

......peterson. 19 carries/120 yds. 2 TDs.....

Aaaaand the skins kicked our rears....

On a worse note. Wilkerson was rushed to the hospital... Not good. We should go get Jonathan Hankins. He still available?.

Crap.

I knew you would be here soon about Peterson! ;) Just goes to show you that the Packers defense can make any opposing player look great and/or have a career like day!

Hankins was signed by the Raiders awhile ago.

Damn Brice misses another tackle and takes down one of his own. We may never see Wilkerson in Green and Gold again!

This isn't a free agent, but they were just saying on First Take that Le'Veon Bell should go to the Packers.
Guess that means he'll end up with the Bears.

We don't need Le'Veon Bell at all. Hard pass.

Eric Reid and Earl Thomas, on the other hand, have to be looked at NOW or Gute is simply not doing his job.

Bell would be a big upgrade, however, a RB that thinks he should be paid QB money and is holding out for it it is not a guy I would want on my team

We just don't need him. We have three capable backs, including a potential star in Jones. Not to mention, this offense is about throwing with Rodgers. It would just be a move for the sake of a move. Overkill.

The Safety spot, meanwhile, is desperate for help. I can't watch Brice anymore. I just can't. Are these coaches not seeing what I am seeing? He is a disaster. Kind of reminds me of how much I couldn't stand Jarett Bush, but at least he was a major contributor on special teams and made a big play in the Super Bowl. Can't imagine ever saying the same for Brice. He is just totally lost.

Didn't Peterson have 1 good game in Arizona last year as well?

It has to be Reid right? Thomas would require giving up someone to get him paid (to be under the cap). At this point I'm guessing Reid would be cheap and you don't lose a draft pick.

What is the reason Reid isn't signed, taking a knee? We don't have an owner that has to face the backlash. If a few thousand season ticket holders don't like it, there are thousands more to take their place. We welcome players back after drug arrests, I will happily welcome Reid.

There have been comments by people saying Brice needs time. That is fine, being a third safety gives him the time. We can't waste another year and you can't take half the season to figure it out. We won it as a wild card once but that is difficult. Byes and home field are huge, we need to get things turned around ASAP.

I tend to agree, just reporting what people are saying. I heard three different commentators suggest Bell go to the Packers today.
Their argument was that an elite RB would balance the Packer offense and take pressure off Rodgers (which is a real bonus considering he's hurt).

It would be interesting to see, since we haven't had an elite RB in a long while. However:
1) We have more pressing needs elsewhere
2) Could he run behind our OL?
3) The guy's attitude is obviously a problem

We pay Rodgers a ton to have the ball in his hands. It’s always going to be the struggle to decide when to take the ball out of his hand to create balance on our attack, but not take the ball out of our playmakers hand and decrease his opportunities either.

At whatever his prorated 14.x million dollar salary is for the year, he’s not worth it to this offense.

And have zero faith he will be worth more than that in a long term investment at his age and level of use.
