S Curtis Riley, who started every game for the Giants last season, visited the Packers today, per source. He snagged 4 interceptions last season.

Update:

Tom Silverstein‏Verified account @TomSilverstein 7m7 minutes ago
#Giants free agent safety Curtis Riley left his #Packers visit without a contract and the two sides aren't negotiating a deal. Appears both sides will seek other options for now.

Good, I LITERALLY just finished my mock!!!!

@TomSilverstein
I'm starting to hear the #Packers aren't in good salary cap shape as reported. Because of cap charges that weren't previously calculated, multiple sources say they are very tight after their most recent spending spree. One source estimated it was close to $5M under. We'll see.

That sucks because I LITERALLY just finished my mock!!!! Now I can't sign all these good players....

Claiborne has been an average cornerback at best. It would make way more sense to bring Breeland back.

Claiborne has better skill set to play man to man.

He is a better player then Breeland and can do more.

Also don’t understand the Mercedes Lewis deal. Could get equal production from a rookie for 570k.
If you are talking just receptions/yards, I would agree with you, but Lewis was signed for his blocking skills, something he excels at and he is considered to be one of the best blocking TE's in the league, which fits well with MLF's scheme.

I know I'm going to get more flak for this guy as well....Sam Shields is also a free agent. He played primarily on special teams for the Rams and provided depth at corner. I'd love to have him back as the 3rd or 4th corner on the depth chart.

Geez, the fourth former Packer who was deemed not good enough to be retained mentioned as a possible signing within the last week.

When will fans finally realize that's not the way to build a roster.

Claiborne only had a really good season in a contract year with the Cowboys in 2016. He was average with the Jets over the past two years.

While it wouldn't be a terrible idea to sign him the Packers don't have enough cap space to consider it a smart move either.

I think Silverstein is off his meds, today he posts this:

So, in double-checking cap numbers with people who know, the #Packers were $13M under as of yesterday. Remove about $5M for their draft picks and they're $8M under, not $5M as some have been led to believe.

Wasn't he the guy that was leading those some to believe? Lesson here Tom, when you don't actually know and you are suppose to be a reporter for the Packers.....don't post it.

I think most of the beat writers for the Pack are terrible.

Have to agree. Seems like most of them are quoting each other and its an endless loop of "per source". They need to log into this Forum if they want the REAL Packer news! :whistling:

I actually like Pete Dougherty. He isn't as active as some, but he puts good informational pieces together, hosts a weekly live Packer chat and isn't afraid to say "I don't have an answer to that".

Shields is definitely more the exception than the rule. He took 2 years off, recovered from his concussions and seems perfectly fine. Cut me some slack, I've yet to mention Jordy (and I won't).

Claiborne is a few zip codes outside of bust territory given his draft position, but he is above average I'd say in skill set. Above average for your 3rd or 4th corner on the depth chart is pretty much all you can hope for on an NFL team; because if he's a future Pro Bowler, he'll be someone else's starter in a year or so with the contract to boot.

Let's be honest here, the pool from which we fish from is shallow as it is, which is why the Draft is doubly more important for us than most teams. I'm not sure if it was mentioned but FAs don't particularly like to come here, especially when we tell them to take a pay cut to play with AR....

Good, I just "drafted" 14 guys this week, I need the money.

The more I think about it the worse the Graham deal gets. Absolutely terrible. Also don’t understand the Mercedes Lewis deal. Could get equal production from a rookie for 570k.
You can’t get any production from either if they are on the bench! ;)
2018 was probably one of the poorest utilizations of a trio of FA TEs I’ve ever witnessed. From the backups, we got 500,000 worth of a production and paid out 4M. Add Graham and we got about 5M of production from 14M+ compensation from the TE group.
We obviously didn’t run the ball much either so one can’t argue we paid for run blocking. Our QB was being pressured constantly so pass blocking wasn’t any arguable benefit.

I'm happy for Shields that he seems to be healthy again but don't consider bringing him back to Green Bay a smart move. Claiborne might add some decent depth but would most likely ask for too much money for it to make sense.

Here I have been pissing and moaning about the money NFL players are being paid....this just floored me!

Center fielder Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels are finalizing the largest contract in professional sports history, a 12-year deal worth more than $430 million.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26306935/sources-angels-trout-reach-430m-extension
not had a look at the details, but that averages at less than $4million/year, not too bad by overinflated sports contracts

Discussing free agents this time of year comes with the huge caveat that resignings and tags haven't taken place yet. So many guys slated to be FA's right now won't actually make it. However, these are the names that interest me the most for the Packers.

Landon Collins, 25, S, New York

Adrian Amos, 25, S, Chicago

Ja'Wuan James, 27, RT, Miami

Adam Humphries, 25, WR, Tampa Bay

Preston Smith, 26, ED, Washington

Za'Darius Smith, 26, ED, Baltimore

Anthony Barr, 27, ED?, Minnesota
Nice to see that a few of your picks came to fruition 4 months later.

that's pretty cool.

ok...so i wonder what tre boston's asking for?

Not sure, but if the Packers have to waive Tramon to pay for it, I say go for it.

Eric Berry is another interesting S still out there. He was elite when healthy, but battled with a heal injury that kept him out of a lot of games last year and an Achilles injury in 2017. He should come cheap, but if he can't play on a consistent basis, probably not even worth a cheap deal.

The Cowboys had Berry in for a visit on Tuesday, but he left without a contract and they are now bringing in former Viking S George Iloka.
