I understand that its a very big picture thing. Maybe some feel that I make it sound much easier than it really is, but I am more disappointed in the effort than I am in what I perceive to be the very predictable and should have been expected results. Basically, the Packers have reaped what they sewed by their actions or lack there of in regards to the WR position.
Big Picture:
- Davante Adams was the last high draft pick used on the position, a late 2nd round pick (#53) in 2014.
- 3 starters since that time were allowed to walk (Jones, Nelson, Cobb)
- Gute invested a 4th, 5th and 6th round into the position in 2018. None of those WR's have fully panned out yet IMO. The 4th round pick had 2 career catches and is out of football.
- Devin Funchess is the only FA WR of any substance signed in a long time.
- Long list of WR's, mostly mid-late round or UDFA's have paraded through GB in the last 10 years, Lazard at the moment seems the only one to have shown potential.
I'm sure there are some things I missed, but when you add it all up, I don't know why anyone is surprised that we currently have 1 starting caliber WR on the 53 man roster.
Let's face it, the Packers have a FHOF QB in #12 and he has been able to make up for a lot of the deficiencies at the WR position. I just can't imagine how much better this team could have been some seasons, had Rodgers had better weapons at his disposal.
