If the Packers cut Janis, I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone else picks him up.
One team Janis would fit in my opinion is 49ers. I wouldnt be suprised if we kept Jordy,Cobb,Adams,TyMo,Abby and Davis then let Janis walk. Only to have Chip Kelly pick him up and add a deep threat receiver with ST assets!

Based on Kelly's talent evaluation in Philly that didn't work at all, if Kelly picks up Janis we can pretty much conclude Janis isn't that good.....

I wouldn't expect him to be cut this season anyway. This is a perfect way to stash him until next year to see if he "gets it." He'll be season long IR'd, and maybe pulled back on roster around Thanksgiving if needed and they haven't used the "eligible to return" designation yet and nobody else looks eligible to use it on. It is now retroactive as opposed to calling it in advance I believe.

He wont be cut! Are you people cracked?!? He is a top tier gunner and a solid depth wr with upside... He will be reevaluated in 4-6 weeks.we have 4 weeks til week one. Even if he takes 8 weeks. He would be worth keeping him on inactives for a month. All the wrs healthy early on, it wouldnt hurt that bad.

I dont think he will be cut but I also think the put him on IR if he is out for 8 weeks. There will be too many other injuries to waste a roster spot on a guy who only plays STs. You can call him solid depth as a wr but outside one game he has done pretty much what you could expect any waiver wire or rookie to do. I actually think putting him on IR for the season wouldnt be a bad option. Let him focus on the playbook for a whole year without playing. Maybe something clicks. Hopefully some of the other guys can play gunner.

Anyway Ty Montgomery could be used as a gunner? He has some speed and a lot of strength. With Goodson and Janis our punter may be punting directly out of bounds quite a bit! I dont think that is the only unit Janis' loss will be sorely felt. Montgomery and Davis can return kicks

The problem about keeping him on IR and bringing him back is it would use up the designated to return option for any player who was hurt later in the year. I can't see them using that option for a 5th WR and gunner when a much more important player could be injured later on and would be a better use of the return option.

It's still preliminary but Jeff should be back by our home opener at the latest under reasonable circumstances.
Somehow we've lost Focus by debating his ability at WR with blinders on and we're forgetting that Jeff was our #2 leading tackler behind Banjo last year on ST. He also ranked #14 in the NFL in solo tackles on ST, Jeff was also our #1 KR with 400+ yards and a very respectable 29 yards per return, including a 70 yarder, which also led the team btw.
Now we can argue about him being a horrible route runner, but that being said, some facts remain. In the 2015 playoffs, Jeff was arguably the highest performing bad route runner in the NFL and showed diligence under high pressure and against arguably a top 5 defensive backfield
There is no legitimate argument against Jeff being a "standout" ST player. We cannot afford to revert back to our old ways on ST and I'm quite sure Ron Zook will back me on that

He was really good on special teams. I just wonder how bad the hand injury is?

Janis underwent surgery to repair his fractured right hand and told reporters he will miss four to six weeks.

To be honest Janis might put up decent numbers with another offense but isn't a great fit for the Packers scheme which is predicated on perfection.

I highly doubt the Packers will keep Janis on the active roster if he's not fully healthy by the start of the regular season. In that case he will be either put on injured reserve or get released.

Montgomery has borderline speed to be an effective gunner. I think there are other players whose athleticism is better suited to play the position but there are question marks about them
being able to duplicate Janis' performance. I don't think Janis is an integral part of another special teams unit.

There's no doubt Janis would have made the roster because of his performance in special teams if he hadn't suffered the injury. Right now other players will get the chance to prove he's expandable on these units.

There is no longer a designated to return option. Teams can bring back any 1 player off IR after a certain amount of time (I thought I read 6 weeks somewhere but some say 8) if they IR him in week 1 and he has to be out for 6 weeks (or 8) and someone else gets hurt during mid season they can evaluate that situation when Janis is eligible to return. If the other guy is more important and can come back in time for the playoffs they leave Janis on IR. If it is 8 weeks chances of anyone getting hurt and being able to come back for the rest of the season after Janis would return (and use up the option) are pretty slim.

Teams will be allowed to choose one player on injured reserve to return to the active roster and play in a game after eight weeks. The rule enables that player to practice with the team for two weeks before being activated though.

As long as a player is capable of returning for the playoffs it makes sense to use that designation on a more important player than a special teamer.

Gunner isnt just a replacable , plug in guy.... Like it or not, but janis and his superior athletic ability. Along with a great ability to improvise moves and get past double teams (a skill thats not used by gbs coaches unfortunately)...... He is not going on ir..... Or RELEASED?!?!?!?!?

That just crazy talk.

If Janis had stayed healthy he would have made the Packers roster because of his performance on special teams. The injury makes things complicated though with him being placed on injured reserve or released being a possibility at this point.

IMO if Janis goes on IR, he is done for the year. Only way he is brought off the IR is if no starters or important second tier players have non-season ending injuries prior to week 12. Meaning Janis would stay on IR at least until week 12. The Packers aren't going to use their one allotted IR move on Janis, unless it appears that they won't need it for anyone else.

I guess we may have another year of the Janis debates if he ends up on IR and he will have another year in the film room to hone his skills. :coffee:

In the mean time, his injury is good news for guys like Abbrederis.

If this article has been posted before, sorry for the repeat. However, if you read it, it becomes very clear where Abbrederis stands in the coaches as well as Aaron Rodgers mind. Barring an injury, I'm thinking Abby is a lock to make the team and may end up seeing significant playing time depending on the guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

This is right. Janis was an impact player on special teams. No way he gets cut.

We're already way past the amount of yards he'd actually gain
