How long will Janis even be out for? Will he be ready for week 1?

There's currently no information available about how long Janis will be sidelined aside of the information in the article I linked to.

Jeff Janis could miss significant time after fracturing at least one bone in his right hand during practice on Wednesday.

was he trying out for long snapper?

He probably wasn't going to contribute much as a WR anyway so the question becomes how does this impact our special teams. Could be the death knell for him as it will give someone else a chance to become the STs ace making Janis expendable. If we end up IRing him he'll likely stick around because of the cheap potential but if he goes into next year with another guy taking over his STs role it will mean he will have even more pressure to produce as a WR.

Janis missing significant time during training camp and preseason all but eliminates the possibility of him making the roster because of his contributions as a wide receiver.

It will be interesting to see over the next few weeks if there's another player on the roster capable of duplicating his performance, making Janis expandable. I have to admit I didn't warch the gunners at all during yesterday's game.

I've been in Janis' corner since he originally made the team and have been optimistically waiting for him to turn the corner & switch potential into production. After a "meh" training camp and now a multi-week set-back I've given up hope for that to ever happen.

Too many young, hungry guys that can/will step-up and become gunners on ST and/or reliable 5th or 6th WR on offense. MM & TT probably won't be able to "hold" a roster spot for Janis, especially since he was a wild-card prior to missing the back half of camp AND preseason games. :( I hope he catches on somewhere and seizes the opportunity... just don't think it's in GB, anymore.

Just really need to step up. And that needs to just take it one step at a time. As if not with GB, somewhere else.

Or maybe they just send him out there to gun with a club, if that isn't a mixed metaphor.

Only 2-300 more posts, and that should do it for the Jeff Janis saga. :D
I think this one has already passed the Finley mark. Maybe there's a Favre thread that went longer. All polarizing players, each for a different reason.

I think Brice, Robertson Daniels, Whitehead and even G.Allison can replace Janis. Whoever played gunner last game did pretty well (I think it was Banjo). They stopped the returns pretty good.

Given Janis's injury and his apparent difficulty of grasping offensive schemes, if the Packers release him, I don't see another team being too quick to sign him. That team would have to have a pretty Vanilla offense and/or feel that Jeff's special teams contributions is worth the roster spot.

I still would like to have him on our special teams, but the next 3 -4 weeks will potentially allow a younger player to prove he can fill those shoes and then some to warrant taking the roster spot from Janis.

Is Janis Practice Squad eligible? You know.....if the Packers want to keep developing him. :coffee:

I have steadfastly been one of Janis's biggest defenders.
Due to his injury I have come to the conclusion that his time in Green Bay is at it's end.
Time to move on.

This is a gamble I'd be willing to take but I'm not in charge, thankfully.

This is how Janis got onto KR duty last season, after Abby got lost early in camp.

I'm not sure as he has 2 years on the active roster already. But his first season he was inactive 13 games. I can't find a straight forward clarification on that.

Out of the clear blue western skies...
And I'm just going to relax, sit, watch and enjoy. Personally, I prefer not to form any carved-in-stone conclusions this early in the preseason. Just thinking back I remember Desmond Howard having a so-so preseason and many in the media and elsewhere predicting he would not survive the cut. But after a strong finish to preseason he eventually went on to be SB MVP. Pretty much anything could still possible for any player, even for some guys on the roster that nobody has even discussed, so far. Every year there are surprises.

Goodson and Janis were the Packers primary gunners last season. Allison and most likely Whitehead aren't fast enough to play the position.

If the Packers release Janis I expect another team to take a gamble on him. He might put up decent numbers in an offense not predicated on perfection but will be responsible for incompletions and interceptions as well.

FYI Janis is still practice squad eligible.

While it might be early in training camp to make any comclusions Janis missing the rest of the preseason sure doesn't increase his chances of making the final roster. Especialky as he struggled mughtily before getting injured.

Only about half the size of the FIRE CAPERS thread. Another Capers thread is also quite a bit longer.
How could I have forgotten? I probably have some posts in all of them. ;)

By the way, I'm not in the "fire Capers" camp for this season. That train left the station; too many players have been drafted in the last couple of years that suit his specific needs. Nobody wants to go in a different direction while still making the playoffs. It will require a bad year before some creative destruction is contemplated.

I wondered why he was not playing in the game. I guess that puts the debate over whether Janis can or cannot be a good receiver on hold. Bad luck. Hopefully he can still play gunner with his hand in a club.

Some of you guys crack me up haha. Jeff Janis is not only the biggest wr we have...he's probably top 3 fastest out of the group. ..probably really only behind Davis. He was not only our best gunner but he's actually not a bad kick returner either. Him and Davis will probably take over those duties full time. All this he will be cut hooblah is crazy. Jarrett Bush stuck around forever simply because he was solid as a gunner and nothing else. I know Janis is a far better football player than Bush was.

If I was a betting man I'd say Janis sees a lot more reps at wr than what some of you think he will. He had a good game against the Cardinals secondary...not the the Saints. Cardinals pass defense was top 10. Two of those guys went to the pro bowl.
He was really good on special teams. I just wonder how bad the hand injury is?

what about the pup list? i believe if he doesn't get taken off by the end of preseason he will not count on the roster and could potentially return week 6 if healing is done and they want to keep him at all. after week 6 or before if they choose they could feasibly get rid of him. me being an armchair gm that is the route i would take, gives abby and ty some breathing room along with davis and geronimo some potential playing time. also if any of them get hurt before that he still could be potentially brought on. perhaps i am way wrong but that is an option.

The instant a player practices, he is no longer PUP eligible. If Janis was hurt before training camp, it would have been perfect for him.
