Got Longwell off waivers in'97. He went to the Vikes as a free agent in '06. Dave Rayner kicked for the Pack in '06. Crosby was drafted in the 6th round in '07 and stayed through '22. Longwell and Crosby each went to a different team for their last (insignificant) year.
Thanks for the timeline. I do not remember Dave Rayner and didn't know Longwell was taken from waivers.

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot that Sherman served as HC and GM for a very short time. And then Holmgren left for Seattle because he wanted both jobs and GB refused.

There is far too much work being either a GM or a HC. Just no way one person could do both and be good. I was pissed when Holmgren left. In hindsight it worked out just fine.

And yeah, I'm surprised Favre didn't ask for a trade after 2004. Although it worked out and the Packers got back to the NFCCG in, I think January of 2008. (Yeah and the Giants won in bitter cold in OT at Lambeau.)

I think that was Favre's last game with GB. I think Rodgers was drafted in 2005 and started in September 2008. Well, I think.......

Longwell was picked up because Chris Jacke went free agent and our PK draft pick, Brett Conway, had a horrific opening preseason game. Conway got hurt over doing it in practice and Longwell made his debut against the Raiders the next game. Conway became toast. He got a tryout in 1998 but the Packers stayed with Longwell. Rayner was an interim kicker. He did hit a long game winner against the Vikings in late 2006 for a 9-7 victory.

Kicking for the Titans. Sunday missed a long FG, made both EPs.
Didn't realized the Titans had played him.

He is perfect on XP's (16 of 16), but his 66.7% (12 of 18) on FG's doesn't bode well for his future. Also doesn't help that he has missed one (3 of 4) from 30-39 yards and missed four (5 of 9) from 40-49. If you throw in the 50+ miss, that puts him at 57% from 30 yards and beyond.

Granted, he only has attempted 18 FG's in his short career, so each make will boost his average up, but so will each miss. I'll take McManus over him or Carlson every time, every kick!

And I had the feeling they would have kept Conway and let Longwell go if Conway wouldn't have gotten hurt. Only because he was a draft pick. That would have been a big mistake.

Conway had the leg but just could not translate into accuracy. Kind of like a punter we drafted some years later named BJ Sander.

Thanks milani. Some parts of my memory still work.

I also remember that between Favre's last game and the decision to start Rodgers, Favre retired and unretired a few a few times, notoriously after the draft in 2008. I think Harlan and a few other guys flew to Mississippi to get him to change his mind. He didn't and then he flew to GB to plead with the team to take him back. What a headache. They finally traded him to the Jets and the Rodgers era started.

So, he wasn't a good draft pick?
Taking a K in the draft is a real crap shoot. How does a scout pick from hundreds of kickers, when it's possible that a solid K will come from other than D1, many times as an UDFA?

Anyway, Carlson was probably a good pick at the time. He has a huge leg but he also has a chronic case of the yips. No thanks.

Jacke is another guy I remember as having a good career in GB.

Finding a PK always seemed to go GB's way with some skill and a lot of luck. We had to suffer through a year of Carlson. He certainly has had his chances. Gluten did an awesome job pulling McManus put of career oblivion. It's still very hard to find solid draft talent at PK.

Now punter is one area where GB has had pretty lousy luck. Ray "Shankowicz" and Bucky "Squibner" are just two who were bad enough to get nicknames. Whelan is really good - a big leg and an accurate leg. A good punter can make the difference between a W and a L by resetting field position. Anyway he's a valuable part of STs.

I had no problem with the Packers taking a K in the 2023 draft, unfortunately I think they had way too much faith in Bisaccia being able to fix Anders head game and inconsistencies.

I was hoping they would draft Moody or Ryland but both were drafted well ahead of Anders and earlier than I would have wanted to see a K drafted. As it turned out, Ryland was a terrible 4th round pick for the Patriots and he only lasted a year. Moody was taken in the 3rd by the 9'ers and had a good rookie year, but between injuries and inconsistent kicking, this year he isn't as good.

I think my tune has changed with Kickers. I used to think drafting one with a 6th or 7th round pick was a good idea. Now, I think I keep a proven veteran on my roster, even if you have to pay him top money. If you lose one, go out there in Free agency and sign the best one.

Seems like you don't know what you have in an NFL kicker until he has been in the league several years.

Josh "One Ball" Well was a guy that the Packers tried to keep. They even offered him a bigger contract than the one he signed with Tampa Bay. He said that he signed with TB for the warmer weather. Can't blame a punter or kicker for wanting to kick inside of a dome or in warmer weather.

Packers used a 4th round (#133) on him in the 1999 draft. Their mistake was only getting him on a 1 year deal after his rookie deal was up.

His "one ball" nickname was as a result of missing his rookie season with the Packers to battle testicular cancer, which he won.

Thanks I forgot about him. I think he was pretty good but seemed to have a short career in GB. I don't think all that much about STs guys like LS and Punters, so he could have been good for a number of years and I simply missed it....
