I didn't expect Amari to play a lot once Cobb was in the fold, but Cobb missed some time and we had a lot of need for playmakers at certain times throughout the year and he didn't ever seem to rise to the occasion. That said, he did start to look more comfortable the last couple games fielding and running with punts at least after a pretty disastrous stretch.

I think he has all the tools, I think mentally he needs to gain confidence and things will start falling in line for him.

As much as I'd like this I don't personally want them to. At least not with our 28th pick...now if we trade back, have two twos sure go for it I guess...but rightfully so as long as Rodgers has Adams it truly won't matter who else we line up short of another HOF WR that Rodgers is looking elsewhere that much, again with a lot of justification. I just see a first rounder on a WR not providing the same towards winning in 2022 as a solid EDGE or a DL or even a DB.
I’m on the fence so not arguing against a Defender. It’s an exciting prospect (no pun) to imagine another playmaker that can change a game opposite Adams. I do want us to get the most immediately productive player using #28 in some fashion.

I’d also consider that idea of a very slight trade back into the opening of Round 2. Then using that draft capital to either double down at a position of need with 2 guys (similar to Aaron Jones-Jamaal Williams but in Day 2). That or IF there is an irresistible player sliding down the board hard make our move up to lock said player etc..

Also Amari wasn't going to be used much once Cobb was there
I really don't think Cobb was the reason for Amari's rough rookie season. Cobb might have taken some snaps from him, but even when Cobb was hurt, Amari was pretty quiet. He only was in for 103 offensive plays and 33% (31) of those were during the final game against Detroit. That was less than ESB (292) and Winfree (143).

Let's hope 2021 was just his year to learn and we see a much better player in 2022 and beyond.

Good points. I've just recently started playing around with the drafts and just doing some mocks for fun. The first 2 times I went defense, defense then a WR in the 3rd. I would love it if a play maker was there in the 2nd but I'm afraid that each time round 2 comes around, there's a defensive talent that this team needs. It's going to be interesting to see what Gutey does this year.

Packers draft? Free agents to fill needs? I see the Packers having a 3 pronged attack here. Probably not any different than any other team, but a little more "frugal" in their case because of cap space.

1. Make a run at one or two free agents early, who could really help the team. Even if you don't get them, force those who get them to over pay, and be out of the market for others, possibly even in other positions, that we can afford but that other team can't, any longer. Of course, if one falls in our lap, get the pen out, and ink him.

2. Draft for back ups that have the potential to move into starter positions later in the season or next year. Don't settle for a guy who is "plug and play" if he doesn't have the high side of the guy who needs a little time to learn his job. It's a 17 game season, and you need to play them all, not just the early games. Make those picks count. Best players? Yes. But, best based on position of need. In my opinion, the Packers should have a listing of the top 100 guys that they want, in the specific order they want them, and stick to that list.

There is no reason to believe that because a guy who is listed 91st suddenly becomes better than the guy you have at 77, because the best players by position than the guy in 91 have been taken. That's panic drafting. You end up with some dumb mistakes. Kind of like trading up to get Love. Why?

Trade DOWN when you are absolutely certain that you're going to still be able to get the next up on your list, or someone a little further down at the same position, who is nearly as good. It also gives you a shot at adding another player from your top 100. Let's face it. If you can get a 4th, and possibly a 5th, instead of only 3, that's a pretty good deal, and the majority of players in the top 100 will at least be good enough to offer some help to a team, at least in ensuing years, and as a back up today.

3. Back to free agents. Now's when you look for those diamond in the rough players, like the Packers found with Rasual Douglas, and a couple of others. The picks of the litter are already gone, now there's the guys not worth it, and those who are trying to resort their lives and career, and have dedicated themselves to becoming a viable member of a team.

This is as much a psychological game as it is anything else. You have to interview the guys, and try to evaluate what makes them tick, and where they will take this new opportunity. Fortunately, the Packers decision makers seem to be able to see through the BS, and find those who are focused on becoming players to be reckoned with.

But, above all, this is my opinion. Disagree if you want. In fact, I hope you do, as long as you throw out reasoning, not inflammatory comments.

I didn’t think he looked explosive enough to be an impact player.

Every year there are a few WRs that produce in that support #2 or #3 role from 3rd-7th rounds, we don't need a #1 but a support #2 at best IMO.

Last couple years few guys:

2021 Guys of Note
Nico Collins picked 89th overall (3rd) - Put up 446 yards and eventually was a starter. *I had a first round grade on Nico!
Josh Palmer picked 77th overall (3rd) - Put up 353 yards
Amon-Ra St. Brown picked 112th overall (4th) - Put up 912 yards

2020 Guys of Note
Gabriel Davis picked 128th overall (4th) - Put up 599 yards first year, 549 last year *I was big on this guy 4th/5th as well
Darnell Mooney picked 173rd overall (5th) - Put up 631 yards first year and over 1,000 last.
Donovan Peoples-Jones picked 187th overall (6th) - He put up over 300 yards rookie year (with lot of other weapons), 597 last year. *This is one guy I was banging constantly for us to pick once the third came and went.
Quez Watkins picked 200th overall (6th) - Didn't play much rookie year, but last year after departures put up 647 yards

AS you see most mid-level guys take a year or two to get going...I mean here's a crazy note - MVS his ROOKIE season put up 581 yards.

If you asked me right now to list four/five WRs in the 2022 draft I expect to make it to the 3rd or later that might be those first year support types (with a GOOD QB in place) I'll go:

Alec Pierce Cincinnatti
Khalil Shakir Boise State
Romeo Doubs Nevada
Jalen Tolbert South Alabama
Kevin Austin Jr Notre Dame

Kyle Phillips would be on that list except I'm questionable on whether he makes it to the 3rd

We need to remember that the skills Amari Rodgers brings to the table would make him a slot receiver. It's possible he will get his shot this year, if there is no Cobb.

Lazard is a RFA, even placing a 2nd round tender (which I don't think it will take) would be very affordable for a guy that is a solid #3/#4 he will be back for certain IMO.

The second round tender was set at close to $4 million for the 2022 season. I don't think the Packers have enough cap space to pay that much to their #3 or #4 receiver.

  • Right of First Refusal: $2.433 million
  • Original-Round Tender: $2.54 million
  • Second-Round Tender: $3.986 million
  • First-Round Tender: $5.432 million
Lazard was a free agent, so that takes original-round tender off the table.

If the Packers want to keep Lazard I would prefer to sign him to a multi-year deal to keep the cap hit low in 2022.

I honestly don't think Lazard is going to get that many offers and I would be shocked if someone offered him above $3M. He is yet another Packer receiver that has been playing with a HOF QB and WR and benefited from it. Do I want to see him stay in GB? Sure, but the Packers need better WR's than just him and Amari to go with Adams.

Lazard to me is the perfect guy to offer a 3M two year deal with maybe a few smaller bonuses for like eclipsing 750 yards or 7 TDs on the year. Hit would be sub 1.5 a year without hitting those and you keep a solid #3 type ceiling guy that excels and blocking and honestly special teams

I totally agree with the bonus structure. Of course, I wish EVERY players contract was set up that way. I do think though when you have these second contract guys, that have been both hot and cold, you can't afford to pay them based on their "hot". They obviously don't want to get paid based on their "cold". So a good compromise would be what you are suggesting, a modest base, but plenty of incentives to make sure they are paid if they are hot and the team isn't strapped if they are cold.

I like Lazard, but i'm not offering him a bunch to stay. You're right, you don't pay him for his hot. I think he's missing something too. I think it's his consistency in the offense, ie, he doesn't always do what he's supposed to.

I think he works hard, I think he has a great attitude, he obviously has talent, but he hasn't proven a bigger contract guy to me.

He isn’t getting a big contract. Even if the packers signed him to a three year, I’d bet it doesn’t break 2 or 3 M a year and would only be because the third year was bloated and most likely a cut year unless he blew up production wise - which to be fair isn’t happening most likely as long as Adams is here

Lazard is a perfect #3 receiver and should get #3 money. He is an excellent blocker, a decent route runner, and can make plays if he's playing against the other team's nickel or dime CB. We still are lacking a real #2 WR.

I'd say that's about right.

That depends on the compensation the Packers would receive in return. If they move on from Love they're in desperate need of a backup QB.
And they need a QB to play in 2 years. If he has potential they should keep him, if he doesnt others know it snd nobody will give you diddly for him.

I’m going to be honest. MVS isn’t worth that $ based on what I’ve seen in GB. You can’t get a better passer combination than Rodgers do you could say his QB will more than likely be inferior to now.
IMO his talent value for me personally is in the 4-5mil range. The guy can’t stay on the field and he’s mainly a 1-trick pony.

I’m not being mean, I just think he’s overachieved for where he was drafted. He’s likely at fault for not running proper routes on occasion. MVS was totally suspect as of late and he fits such a small niche I’d rather move on if he’s more than about 5.5M. I’d rather have an aging Cobb and he’s lost a step.

I think it’s time to hone in at WR this draft. Either go 2nd Rounder or use a 3rd Rounder preferably and If we go past that use a 4th or 4th Comp and make sure it’s not J’Mon Moore in disguise

If J'Mon had hands we'd be letting Adams walk I bet. Had suddeness and ran pretty good routes already for a rookie. could go up, good body control, everything looked great until it came time to do the most important thing, catch it.

J'Mon seems to have hung on a bit, bouncing from team to team either on their PS (Browns, Texans, Falcons) briefly or given a tryout. Recently he was selected in the USFL draft with Pick #111 (10th WR taken) in the round of WR's.
