Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Rodgers called “last dance” and choked (again). Green Bay cannot put a better or even AS good a team this coming year no matter what. Rodgers had his chance… sell high and move on.
I know. This is a tough one. The arguments on both sides have merit.

I’m of the opinion that either could still work, but it’s about the $ and potential draft capital. There’s a delicate balance and the Packers FO may run into resistance in a trade (from Rodgers Corner).

Rodgers performed at a below average level vs. the Niners but the Packers lost the game because of their special teams. I'm quite sure that unit can potentially improve dramatically next season.

It seems there are too many fans who believe it's no issue to replace the back-to-back MVP in a heartbeat. Most likely all of you will be hugely disappointed.

Haha thats never gonna happen...Adams is gonna be back too obviously. Theres no way Rodgers comes back without Adams

So Adams, Lazard, Amari Rodgers, draft pick (1st-3rd) maybe MVS if he doesnt have much of a market, and possibly cobb on a reduced salary

With possibility of a surprising veteran addition along the lines of allen robinson

quick....I love ya man but you got to at minimum come in to the realistic scenarios of creating cap HELL in the future and the IMPOSSIBLE. I don't even think there is a enough guys over a million or two deals to cut in order to have Rodgers, Adams, Cobb, MVS and Allen Robinson on the roster next year.

Contracts that are heavily back loaded and guaranteed is where this whole thing is going. They're sharpening their pencils at this point and doing everything they can to figure out how to keep the free agents they want to keep, along with Rodgers and Adams. For a lot of the players, who are a little older, a back loaded guaranteed contract is going to be their last decent contract. People are going to be surprised how much money can be moved.

That doesn't mean they can necessarily keep Adams along with Rodgers. They could lose Adams, but they aren't going to lose Rodgers. There are others as well, who are prepared to leave, unless the right offer is on the table.

Don't be too surprised if the losses are less than you imagined. Bean counters can do wonders with the money they have to play with.

Sadly, I think you are correct, at least it seems to have progressed that way with more and more with teams, including the Packers.

The Rams winning the SB won't help either. In some fans eyes, the Rams are now the Flavor of the Day and any team can win it all if they just go all in. What these fans don't realize, only 1 team "wins it all" and even to do that, the stars have to align just right. I have already seen a few posters hold the Rams up to the mantle and say "I told you so Packers, this is how its done, you messed up!" Seems to me the Packers not only had a better record than the Rams, but also beat them quite convincingly in Week 12. Right, but lets mortgage the future, for that one shot at the SB.

Anyway, yes these back-loaded, guaranteed contracts, that teams have no intention of seeing the player through to the end of them, will temporarily sink more than a few teams, I just hope the Packers are not one of them. I would be just fine if the NFL declared that starting in 2030, no money can be cap deferred, in other words, you pay as you go. Return the NFL to player development, coaching and smart player management, being what sets teams apart. Not, what team can move the shells around the best, using future money, for the present.

Did they find some money in the couch cushions?

Haha they got plenty of cash, and theres plenty of ways to manipulate the salary cap... the "salary cap" excuse is for owners who dont want to spend their cash. The Packers owners are the people of brown county and they need to demand that the packers front office representatives including Murphy and the board soend their cash to win a few SB titles before Rodgers retires

The one thing the Rams did I wish the packers would have, was raise their offer above the minimum for OBJ... i dont think anyone would argue he wasnt intrical in them winning the SB. Had they not gotten him mid season theres no way theyre sitting where they are now especially with Woods getting injured

And that move in no way was a mortgage of the future...but it is the kind of move that wins Superbowls

LOL...Are those the same owners who will want Murphy, Gute and Ball fired when the team tanks because they pushed way too much money out into the future?

Yes, the Packers organization is very financially sound, but for those thinking they were too tight this year or heading into next year and beyond, aren't really fully in touch with just how the Cap works.

I was someone who actually wanted OBJ in Green Bay as well. However, why are people saying it was strictly the Packers lower offer that kept him from coming to Green Bay? I haven't seen one quote from OBJ or a reliable source that said "Had GB just matched the Rams offer, he would have signed with the Packers." Also, still no guaranteed that the Packers get to the SB, I doubt OBJ helps the Packers beat the 49'ers, unless OBJ was playing Special Teams on FG and Punts.

Just like New Orleans doing this bull has Payton leaving....I personally feel even if we win the SB in 2022....this type of money moving will cost Gute or MLF or both their job or make them want out eventually vs having to deal with being able to do spend nothing, bring in no one and still try and field a competitive team.

Haha...i think i do man. Also I like to stay positive akwats definitely. So yeah some things are admittedly a pipe dream most likely but definitely not beyond the realm of possibility

I was saying all this stuff about Aaron Jones last off season and a lot of people were saying theres no way they can afford it salary cap wise...well they did and it didnt ruin the salary cap for the future either

But yes I did not mean MVS and Allen Robinson. Thats a one or the either and possibly neither situation.

Which if i had to bet id say neither with a better chance for MVS becas i think he wont get the offers he would have had he improved on his 2020 season. And then you have Rodgers comment about playing with MVS and Adams next season

The Allen Robinson mention is only as a huge longshot. Becas we know both sides have had interest in each other in the recent past...last time Adams got a new deal at 14m per or so. The packers had no cap space either. And what did gute do? He turned right around and offered allen robinson 3 years at 14 m per too. If the bears hadnt matched it I cant imagine the Packers wouldnt have won, one of the last 3 SBs

Actually I am in touch with how the cap works...I was certainly in touch with how it worked last off season when others were saying theres no way we can resign aaron jones becas of the cap

I guess all I can say is youll see...the Packers will kick the can to try and win during Rodgers last 4 seasons. And it will not ruin the teams financial future becas the cap is going way up. Well see who was right...

I'd say ruin is strong but having a RB on contract that is immovable for another year (2022) in Jones no matter how his 2021 season went (had it went bad or his injury been terrible) hand cuffs a team IMO when not needed. I LOVE Jones but clearly the organization (or Rodgers heat) made them even doubt how well of a back Dillon is and they felt resigning Jones was so crucial....fiscally I would have rather signed Jamaal cheaper, and let someone pay Jones what we gave him....another $5M or so to spend elsewhere and I don't think our team is weakened a ton.

However, part of my ability to look right is hindsight so I get that and conceded it as well.

**I don't remember anyone say there was no way to sign him also....smart? Arguably fiscally responsible...that was the discussion.

You could be right on Jones, but I don't remember anyone saying that they couldn't sign Jones, what I do remember is a lot of us saying that they shouldn't. I like Jones, but I still would have been fine with them using the money elsewhere.

Again, nobody has said that they couldn't kick the can down the road. IF Rodgers is staying in GB, I can totally see them doing it. Doing this doesn't ruin the teams "financial future", but what it does do is it handcuffs them in what they can do down that road to try and improve the roster.

Every yearly cap, even several in succession, can be manipulated. However, all the contracts eventually come home to roost, so every team has to spend pretty close to the overall cap at some point. Nobody banks it.

I disagree. I think Favre hid it pretty well. But I think he was very much a prima dona. Just look at what he did in the end to try to manipulate the organization.

You mean showing up to work when he was under contract with the Packers?

Yeah and thats the point...the cap is ment to be spent...its the portion of revenue the players have collectively bargained to receive. Thats why theres a minimum each team has to spend

Reportedly the Packers are set to make Aaron Rodgers the highest paid qb in the NFL...Currently Patrick Mahomes is at 45 m per. So somewhere between 46 and 50 million per....

Lets call it 48 m per year for 3 years in addition to the one he has remaining with one additional void year tacked on for cap purposes. I agree thats a lot of money against the cap but what are you gonna do thats the price you pay for having the best qb in the league.

And i expect Rodgers to go out and have an even better season than his last 2 in 2022...

Yup that thought was rumored and released Saturday. I cannot get on board with such a thought. Now of course that 46/50 a "year" is a figure of the whole contract spread across all the years plus "magic/ignorant void years no doubt" IF this is agreed to the structure of this contract is going to be incredibly interesting to look at.

Considering the Packers currently have $26.8M on the books still for Rodgers, they are going to really have to extend him out say 3 years but call it 5 total additional years, with 2 voidable. So the Packers now have $176.8M on the books for Rodgers. Almost this years total team cap.

So this year, they structure it as a $1.8M hit, to free up some Cap. That leaves $175M to account for over the course of the remainder of the contract (5 more years). Maybe in 2023 they only want him to be a $20M hit, so down to $155 with 4 years left. So now its about $38.5M/year and you have 2 more years of his services and $155M on the books. God that is going to sting when he retires.

Yeah theyre going to no doubt save as much as they possibly can on his current 46m cap number for 2022. I guess with the ability to restructure money to signing bonus and add void years every year...i just hope the cap really does keep going up i see no reason it wont

I dont think you can go more than 5 years out for cap purposes @captainWIMM...so the year he has remaining, 3 additional years and a void year.

But i believe they can keep restructuring to signing bonus and adding a void year every year til hes done

And well have to see what the real numbers are...but i expect he gets almost fully guaranteed

Yeah I wasn't sure if they could add 5 years to his existing 1 and have 2 of them voidable. Whatever they can do, its going to be one of the biggest single player cap hits that we have seen on the books.

Unless we have another Covid type season. Even if it does go up every year, it does that for every team. When you are the team that is hard against the cap due to 1 or 2 players, you better be great at drafting and developing, because you won't have much blood left to squeeze out for paying free agents or even your own.

It won't go up fast enough for a reckoning to come some day on this.
