Tax benefits for pastors ? :cautious:
However I save church taxes since I officially became a heathen, like so many others in Northern and
Eastern Germany ! :D
We do have a weird tax system....I know.

It wasn't so much tax benefits for the clergy as for the church. Pastors had the opportunity to opt out of Social Security. We also could get exemptions for the money we pay on work mileage and housing. Other than those, we paid all the taxes everyone else did.

The churches themselves are exempt from a lot of taxes because of the separation of church and state issues in the U.S. So churches don't pay property taxes and they also have non-profit religious organization exemptions for other areas.

And in Germany there is no real seperation regarding church taxes. When you're officially a church member (protestant or roman-catholic for example) the tax authorities collect it for the churches with the monthly prepayment for the income taxes. If you dont want to pay it you need to quit as a official church member at your local register office, thats what I did.
Germany and tax laws, a very special story.

I'm familiar with those laws. But who do you go to for weddings, baptisms and funerals if you don't pay the church tax?

Many parents reenter or just dont quit when they have children that they want to be baptized.
Wedding is the same but in this part of the country most people dont have a church wedding. Of course completely different in Bavaria for example where most couples seem to prefer a church wedding.
Funerals isnt a problem too, most cemeteries belong to our local boroughs or townships. And there is no problem to hire a speaker for your funeral.
Yeah, I know that is very secularised and different from what you have and you are doing across the pond.
