Another player that the Packers could have waited a full season on giving a new deal to. Instead, in their fear to lose Love and their agent threating Love to sit out 2024, they rushed into paying him huge money.
What would we have lost had we started say, Willis, this season? What would we have missed? Maybe a third place division finish, and a one and done in the playoffs? Don't get me wrong, I definitely think Love should get another season to improve (I still think about the sophomore jinx). I just don't like the idea of being dead stuck with him. I'd like to see the whole salary cap system rehauled.

Purely a guess of course, but I don't see us in the playoffs with Willis starting the whole year at all. I love the kid but we are not nearly as dynamic.

I get the cap structure sucking, BUT if you don't want your team to be hooked to a QB for awhile get ready for a new one every three or four years and mediocre/subpar play lot more likely

Willis was obtained strictly for insurance, we had no back up. The Packers hitched themselves to the Love Train as soon as they tore up the 5th year deal they had with him and inked a new mega 4 year, $220M contract, that included a $75M signing bonus and $160M guaranteed.

One way the NFL could change things with the Cap system and it might put an end to teams signing all these HUGE guaranteed deals, would be to make teams account for salaries in "real time". Example: "A contract for 4 years and $220M, is simply a $55M/year deal and your cap hit each of the 4 seasons the player is on the team, will reflect the full $55M.

The Players Union would call for a strike.

A union which as of February 2024, had net assets of $783.1 billion. The NFLPA's yearly revenue has doubled in the last decade, from $100 million in 2009 to $210 million in 2021.

Is there DE coach? Seems like all the DEs only know the bull rush.
Jason Rebrovich is the Packers DL coach. His "specialty" was coaching defensive ends. His assistant, Vince Oghobaase, was an NFL Defensive Tackle, so I assume his focus is more on the interior guys.

I wonder if they can hire LVN a special tutor? :coffee:

Agree. If you look at who is left in the playoffs, all 8 teams have either a highly paid Veteran QB (Lions, Eagles, Rams, Chiefs, Bills, Ravens) or a young dynamic player, that was selected 2nd in their draft class (Commanders, Texans).

You are correct. It looked to me that the Philly defenders are coached to lead with the helmet. It happened over and over, and no flags were thrown.

I looked at the hit on Jayden Reed again. It was a "clean" hit, but definitely a missile to Reed's shoulder, delivered by Blankenship. How hard was it? Reid suffered a dislocated shoulder from it.

I don't have a problem with clean hard hits and ones like that, fire up your teammates. Seems the way the Packers fire each other up is committing stupid late hit penalties or dancing after a tackle on a 7 yard gain.

It all gets back to coaching and starts with MLF. While I don't think he has created a "Country Club atmosphere", I would like to see more fire out of the players and less out of the HC, he should be concentrating on his job.

That's what myself and some others were saying in the game thread I think. People throw around the term "soft" awfully easily, but at bare minimum I'd say we're a team that doesn't really play with a ton of "edge" at times. Like I was saying....more often it seems we are the "nail" rather than the "hammer". Sometimes I get the sense that some of these guys buy into their own hype a little too much...

Well put.

I still don't know a whole lot about Xavier McKinney, but I thought he might be more of the Charles Woodson type on the field. We saw a bit of fire out of McKinney on the sidelines Sunday when he seemed to be chewing Valentine a new one. Seems like the only "fire" we see on the field is the individual kind. A guy gets in, gets a sack and celebrates alone to the crowd.

The Packers definitely are missing some spunk on both sides of the ball. I wasn't a fan of the way A-Rod used to give guys the evil stare, but maybe at least it was motivating those guys to play better.

Maybe not, but again what does that cost us? A one and done in the playoffs as the seventh seed? Maybe we finish closer to .500, but at least we get a higher draft pick lol.

Guess the answer will be in looking at what Darnold gets coming off his 2 less than stellar end of season games.
Not sure what Darnold will get or deserves, however, what did show up (IMO) is that Detroit manhandled him with blitzes and constant pressure he could not handle, he came out of that game with a damaged psyche and confidence; Rams just followed up and did the same thing. Darnold knows better than to hold onto the football when he cannot find a receiver, he showed however, his fear of throwing a pick after Detroit and thus held it for multiple sacks. Found his weakness and that of the O line, took advantage and MN had no answer. Darnold's body of work was VG this year, if he does not find a way to improve on his ability to handle blitzes he will not get the big payday.

Leadership and TEAM (no I in team) but you have to have leaders who make that the mantra of the team.... who on this team shows leadership skills or acts like they want to be the leader? McKinney - yes, Jacobs- Yes, ??????

The announcers mentioned it. Good on Burks for helping his team, but I think it was both an illegal hit, and a recovery by Nixon. It's easy to complain about the refs, but that had a huge, huge impact on the game. Imagine the Packers keeping possession and starting at the 45 after a 15 yard penalty for the Burks hit.
And not getting behind by 7 right off the bat?

That seems to be a bad habit that he picked up from Rodgers, who got it from Favre. Drives me nuts to see long balls just "thrown up into coverage" on 1st or 2nd down. Throw the ball out of bounds and live to see another down. I have less of a problem with those kind of throws on 3rd and long, when everyone else is covered. Might draw a PI and even if it is intercepted, if its a 40+ yard throw, probably ends up being similar to a punt.

Too often this year Jordan/Matt didn't seem to have a solid 3rd/4th down play call. Now maybe they did and Love just couldn't find a guy open. However, in my humble opinion, anything less than 10 yards needed for a first down should include Love rolling out, with the option to run and receivers being PAST the first down yardage, but no more than 1-10 yards past.
A QB can throw it up for grabs if he has WRs who will go get contested balls. We really don't have a guy like that in our WR room.

Would it be ironic if the league reviwed it and fined Burks? But I do not think they want to show Philly up.
Sounds like those fellows who say the league is rigged. I will say that the refs were not particularly kind to us this year.

Agree. The Slay interception against Wicks is testament to that. Maybe a ball that Love shouldn't have thrown, but Wicks gave very little effort to try and either catch that ball or prevent Slay from catching it.

While I think both McKinney and Jacobs are excellent players, they seem to lead more by example and their play on the field. Maybe, given the fact that this was their 1st year on the team, neither felt like it was their place to step up and lead. That could and probably should change in 2025. Jacobs though just seems like an Aaron Jones type of player. Good vibes, happy go lucky and just wanting to help the team win. I actually would like to see Love get a bit more vocal and be more in charge of the offense. He always just seemed like "another guy in the huddle" when he was out there.

Love also seems pretty bland on the field. Maybe that's a refection of his coach, I don't know. It's good that he keeps his cool, but I would like to see some fire out of him now and then (talking about Love here). Tom Brady showed it, and I understand he had some small measure of success.
should we find tape showing #12 and #4 in their heyday?!
