In light of that deal that the Jags gave the LB I’ve never heard of, I like this price.

Yikes...that is a lot for a guy turning 30 shortly expected to run around like that for years to come....gotta see the structure of the deal similar to Preston's (which was structure very excellently if honest).

We better be thankful Krys Barnes is an ERFA and will be cheap! Making our ILB group essentially less than $12M/year between the starters most likely - makes the deal more palatable.

Yes. Also we got basically a bonus year already so it’s like 8.6m annual while he’s here in totality.
Absolutely HUGE move!!!
Thank The Lord for VOID years, its what he gave me and I’ve done alright for a slackjaw

Let’s go draft that starting caliber DT, #2 WR and TE (Reports coming out that Tonyan is “ahead of schedule” in recovery which is super positive)

I honestly did not think that they could keep Campbell. He's been consistent in his career and then excellent with the Packers. Rasul Douglas played mediocre for most of his career and then very good for part of one season. I thought that it would be easier to keep Douglas while my preference was to keep Campbell.

Guys must be taking cap-friendly deals to make this all work. Me likey.

I concur @El Guapo I also figured we'd lean to Rasul more as a solid CB is harder to find IMO than an off ball linebacker in this day and age...but I'm still smiling about this for sure, just struggling to fit the pieces fiscally together in a manner that work with the numbers reported.

@OldSchool101 this 100% takes LB down the board some for sure! I'm now thinking unless a true falling prospect Gute loves falls, we are looking at a late Day 3 or none at all and just UDFAs.

I didn't catch this gymnastics of a thought you did here, but I like it and it made me chuckle!
I’m guessing the higher initial salary is to convert a higher % to signing bonus as a deferral technique right?
Sounds to me like they did that with Preston and Campbell so they’ll get lots of upfront cash but gives us initial cap relief years.
Those guys gotta be happy. That’s what happens when you go out and ball!

This is what I'm assuming as well, gotta see that structure for sure.

@OldSchool101 the structure and guarantees is very good IMO on Preston - smaller bonus spread then you might have figured.

Folks, the structure of this deal is VERY team friendly for getting out of it without a ton of dead cap honestly at any point but really after three seasons, and quite digestible even after two.

He turns 29 in July.

I'm guessing this will be a 3 year deal, essentially. So his age 29, 30, and 31 seasons.

More than his age, my main concern is that his play for the Packers in 2021 was miles better than anything we saw from him prior to that point. So are we paying for an outlier? Or is there something about the defense and coaching in Green Bay that just allowed him to click?

Given that they did this, you have to assume that it's the latter. If his play is somewhere in the neighborhood of last year, the deal is a bargain relative to what some of these other guys are getting paid.

I don't disagree for sure, but I show he is is 29 already? Not that that matters terribly much a year difference.

Honestly, if he hits just 80% of what he was for three years this is an solid deal 100%.

A lot of platforms will list the age that the player will be when the next season starts. That's my guess as to what you're seeing.

He seems to be a good fit in this defense and was sorely missed whenever he wasn't out there.

Ecstatic for Campbell, happy he’s still with the defense. I’ll go on record as saying Douglas would have been the better signing to give the team 3 good corners. Here’s to hoping Campbell proves me wrong.

That. Plus I like that we can go into this deal knowing we let ZaDarius go. Meaning The money we saved with Z paid for Preston plus some left over.
$2.2m here, $3.7m there.. those reworked deals and cuts add up to a massive chunk off the books pretty quickly.

Here's how Campbell's deal is structured. Pretty low cap hits during the first two seasons with the Packers being able to save cap space by moving on from him after only two years.

The deal for Campbell doesn't include any void years.

Thought for sure Campbell was gone. I'm happy...
Absolutely thrilled at this news here! Imo, he was the most important re-signing of this off season. The defense has become a completely different animal with him out there.
