Mason Crosby didn’t miss a field goal last season but he has already missed six over the first nine games this year.
Should we be thinking about moving on without him next year?

Can I ask why you insist on starting new threads when this is already being discussed in the Special Teams thread?

No offense, but coming here and seeing 9 threads about the same topic and then forcing the mods to merge them all, gets old.

All depends...it sucks cutting a guy that has three years of voided cost to you, but his road is getting thinner and this year has not helped him support the idea of keeping him. His contract doesn't save us a ton of money over a rookie kicker, but in a cap situation where every dime may matter this is one of the MANY questions which will be needed answered.

so give him every chance to succeed. Better blocking, better holding.

I foresee keeping him being a very possible option - because anyone with half a brain cell when it comes to football sees it is NOT all his fault this year.

They protected their kicker on the PS. It is very clear theyre moving on from Crosby next season. Hes one of the more expensive kickers in the league. It only makes sense to move on. He may actually even retire.

Protecting a kicker on PS is very common across the league since Covid time hit. Makes a last minute switch due to a positive test still possible. That said IF they move on, it would be a near sure thing that Molson will have the inside track at the gig.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

As stated in the other thread by Captain, the Packers have a lot of money tied up in Crosby, it would take a total collapse on his part to move on from a 15 year veteran that time and again has been a clutch kicker.

Seems to me everything has to be perfect for Mason, otherwise fire the other guys. Doesn't make a bunch of sense to change snappers in mid season, with only one real bad game.

Yes, everything should be perfect. And if it's not; fire the ST coach. I am serious.

Considering that this was Hunter Bradley's 4th season playing for the Packers and he was only the 9th LS to ever be drafted, it must have taken some pretty good reasons to cut him loose.

So besides him, what "other guys" were fired because of Mason Crosby?

Yeah if Love is the QB 1 for 2022 (not the discussion for this thread) there is a major bonus to riding Crosby one more year (if he is willing to stay and not retire post-Rodgers era).

IDK. I’m going to say 2-3 of those misses were not Crosby, plus once you begin to question your placeholder or peripheral protection? things get dicey.
I have him missing 4 FG tops, maybe realistically 3 misses that Mason was mainly responsible for.
I guess I just don’t buy that he suddenly went from good to bad. Especially after watching opponents setup a State Fair in the kicking lane before the laces turn.
We’ve put a new holder-specialist in the mix, to get confident it’s not unlikely to take half a season to get in really solid, live rhythm. We might not see perfection immediately, but I think the 2nd half of the season improves some and we tighten up at playoffs.

The Packers would save $2.4 million of cap space by moving on from Crosby after this season. While Poker has convinced me it's impossible to find a decent replacement ;)from him there will be some tough decisions to be made because of the cap next offseason.

The Packers protecting Molson on the practice has nothing to do with them planning to move on from Crosby next year.

FYI only five teams protected a kicker on the practice squad this week.

He's adjusting to a new holder this season. I don't think he's run out of strength. If he's still inconsistent by the end of the year, I'd say yes, time to go.

Kickers have the most mental strain of all NFL players. Crosby, like ALL tenured kickers, has endured some rough stretches but the physical talent is still clearly there. Janikowski suffered from the same fate and he is regarded as one of the all-time greats even though his career stats aren't as good as Crosby's

I was wondering if the punters holding had something to do with his departure, yes the new guy is an upgrade for sure.

Just want to get to a place where Crosby can feel comfortable again. Probably a different holder because Jobo is too good a punter. Let him concentrate on punting.

You mean JK Scott? Nah....Crosby was great with JK holding. Scott just sucked at being a consistent Punter.

The old long snapper, Hunter Bradley also seemed to be doing a good job, up until this season. I doubt they release him if it is just Crosby or Bojo being the issue.

Maybe they cut the wrong guy and it is the Oline and/or Bojo. As @gopkers just said, you can't cut Bojo or Mason, so perhaps try a new holder or just practice the operation a lot more.

A competent sprcial teams coach would have never let it get to this point

I would like to think that, but some of the blame should be born by the players making the mistakes too. I think cutting a 4th year vet like LS Hunter Bradley is proof that someone thought it wasn't just Drayton being a problem.

No doubt our Special Teams is a mess and far from special once again this season. Is it all on Drayton? Not really, but when it happens too often and by different players, he is the guy that will probably take the fall and in this case, probably warranted.

I don't think the Packers will fire Drayton, at least not just yet. Who do you replace him with? If fired, it will be after the NFL season or perhaps the College season, but in either case, they just need to play better until such time.
