The NFL introduced the current playoff format before the 1990 season. Since then 17 of the 25 Super Bowl champions had a bye week in the first round after finishing either first or second in their conference. You have to realize that the main reason these teams won the title is that they were more talented than their opponents and not because of having a week off.

Earning the bye is important. If nothing else, you need to beat only 3 decent or better teams instead of 4.

Posted this at some point a while ago, but it's again applicable. Basically, the higher the seed, the more championships there have been.

Some interesting points to me are that an AFC number #5 seed has never won it and only two #3 seeds have won it.
