It’s essentially what happened with Chicago. During that last drive, anytime that clock stops the QB needs to communicate to his players to hustle to the Line quickly AHEAD OF TIME. Also that getting out of bounds to stop the clock is equivalent to adding 5-10 yards to the end of the play. Unless it’s gets a 1st down or TD?use the sideline.
Maybe its because I have been watching the game longer than most of these "kids" have been playing, but it just seems common sense football escapes some of them.

Watching the Bears debacle against the Lions was nothing short of a Cluster F* by their players and coaches. If I didn't know any better, I would have said they were throwing the game.

It also makes me wonder...a lot of times for example when a WR goes to check if he's lined up properly, the ref will usually give them the OK. But also sometimes you'll see where the ref is proactively saying, "hey, you're not on, check your spot" or whatever. And in those cases, it's usually not until a player is persistently having to be reminded, toeing the line, etc that they will eventually get flagged for it.

So all that to say, I have to wonder if the same thing isn't happening on the defensive side of the ball. Like, the ref is saying "hey, you're over, back it up" or "check your position" or whatever and the player keeps pushing it before actually calling it for a flag. If that's the case, that's even worse IMO. But I can't say for sure if that's actually going on or not, to be fair. Just thinking out loud...
It's a good point. The refs will tell an OT or TE/WR if they need to back up. Not sure if they do it on D but I'd say they do. And yeah, that makes the penalty all the more unforgivable.

And that makes me wonder why the refs have that discretion at all. If the player doesn't know how to line up, it should be a penalty.

It might be happening, but I doubt it. I know at the beginning of the season, refs were reminding guys about the new rule that offensive tackles must have their helmet aligned no further away from the LOS than the center's belt line. Then flagging them after a warning if it continued. I haven't seen many of those penalties called since the initial 2-4 weeks of the season, maybe they still are.

I guess what I am saying, I doubt refs are spending much time warning players that they are about to get a flag and only flag them after a warning or two.
