You don't need the IMO, it's an absolute fact that he would have been an upgrade at safety.

LOL....sometimes I like to add "IMO".....otherwise folks in disagreement will accuse me of trying to state things as being "factual" when in fact....they may not be. ;)

But your point is very true.....pretty much a lot of what is written in here "an opinion" by posters?

I didn't see that assertion in what he said at all. I think he was just trying to be realistic about one of the factors at play here-- large portions of the Green Bay fan base would be angered by signing Reid.

I'm not at all interested in a discussion of whether that's good, bad, or otherwise. But I do think it's a valid point to bring up, as people running the organization need to consider it.

My guess....if Reid is successful and plays well, there will be one fan base talking about what a great football player he is and 31 other fan bases will still have some people saying he shouldn't be playing football.

For the most part, yeah. Though I would dare to a lay a bet that there will still be a certain contingent of Panthers fans that remain upset about it. And likely some of the more casual/peripheral will stop watching the games.

For clarity, I would have loved for the Packers to sign him. But I do understand that there are layers to consider in this situation.

Reid is a talented football player without doubt it is too bad some fans let emotions get in their way of thinking.

Maybe Gute did but he chose elsewhere.

Which is why I said it would be interesting to hear what Gute has to say about it. It's been obvious since week one that Packers could use him (since preseason if we're honest). If Gute says that Reid had an offer from the Packers but chose to not play football rather than play for the Packers, well then that just stinks I guess.

Yes, I should have said "for the most part, the Panther fan base will probably be on board". There are always going to be some who can't overlook things and I respect that. Just like I have a hard time seeing players in the NFL that beat, abused, *****...whatever...seems like some are more willing to overlook those events quicker than a knee.

So far most of what I have read online is favorable for Reid and the Panthers, but give the other side a chance to build up their anger. ;)

Oof... that is a damning observation. And that's the end of what I'll be saying on this topic.

I'm sure the NFL will figure out a way to punish Clay Matthews over the Reid signing, they just haven't figured out how. :coffee:

Sadly though, what I wrote has some merit. We don't need to get into a political, social, ethical debate on the quality of character of the NFL labor pool, but let's just leave it at, some of them probably shouldn't be considered role models for today's youth.

I doubt Gute is going to say much though regardless of his level of interest. if he was really interested he's not going to undermine the team or the players he has. "Oh well you know, we really wanted an upgrade there and i'm pretty bummed we missed out on him" isn't going to go well and it's not going to do any good anyway. If anything he's most likely going to say, we're always looking for ways to improve the team, make it more competitive etc and we're excited about the guys on our team. If he addresses it at all.

In other words......."stand cardboard image of Gute at podium, cue up the standard PR speech on this guy or that guy and move on".

I have stopped expecting much from the Packer organization in regards to overly insightful information on the thought process of decisions. But that is what a large business does, so I shouldn't expect anything different.

no we shouldn't. I mean I'd love to know the inner workings, but then if I really want to know I better get on staff and work my way up. It's the right way to do it.

I think we have more fun here speculating, kicking ideas around, questioning this and that.....working "in the know" might be boring and mundane. Also, If we had access to a factual daily report to read what actually happened each day at 1265 Lombardi Ave, what would we have to talk about? :whistling:

Read his post again. That is exactly one thing he's saying, not to mention smearing "conservative caucasions" for Reid's self inflicted problems.

I took it as just pointing out that a large portion of the fan base wouldn’t like the Reid signing. However, it’s not my point to defend so I’ll just leave it at that and step aside.

I was trying to imply that Gute obviously didn't try and sign him. It's hard to believe that Reid, a guy with no prospects from other teams (as time has proven) decided to sit out of football all together rather than sign a contract with the packers in the preseason or after week 1.

While we can't know for 100% certain that there was no interest on the Packers' part, the odds that they offered him a deal and he just turned it down are very slim.

I doubt any of 32 fan bases would like it. But thank you for your thoughtful, courteous and respectful reply.

To be fair, broadly speaking, the group that chooses to believe that's what his protest is about does look a little monochromatic (again, broadly speaking!)

That isn't what they believe. They don't like being spit on, especially after it was explained that the anthem was the wrong time and venue for it. BTW, does anyone talk about their message or about protesting the anthem?

I am VERY p*ssed off right now that Eric Reid is employed again........by the Panthers.

He should have been a Packer. :coffee:

I don't think "they" appreciated being told how they were allowed to make a point. The efficacy of the protest can be debated but only because NO protest is going to advance that discussion in some parts of the country.

We'll never know what happened, but maybe it's as simple as he didn't want to play for the Packers.

You think he wanted to sit at home, not get paid, and not know if he was every going to play again rather than collect hundreds of thousands of dollars and play for the Packers? I mean, it's possible I guess...
