I'm mostly pissed because we did nothing to improve this team and this upcoming draft has one potential all-pro safety. We should have easily been able to give up a 3rd this year and a 5th next year for Fowler to offset this move and make our front seven better, but we made one of our weakest spots weaker. If we had kept him and let him walk, we most likely get a 3rd round pick. Not happy with the way today went. Sorry...

we weren't getting anything back when he left. We signed too many FA's this year to get compensatory picks next year. He'd just be gone

It might be nice to see the team mend the occasional fence though. Getting rid of players is cathartic but doesn't really actually help the team on the field come gameday.

I dread to think what happens if we end up getting a star player (other than Rodgers) who decides to hold-out similar to the likes of Earl Thomas or Leveon Bell. I am not as worried about losing Montgomery but you trade your best safety in a year where you are fighting for a playoff spot and do not make any moves to improve the team. That sends a very poor message to a fan like me who is hoping to get the most out of Rodgers.

Demovsky says that the Packers would have received a compensatory pick in 2020 by letting HHCD walk.

Got to say I'm not too thrilled today guys. Created a hole at safety, and did nothing to upgrade the pass rush. Really feel they could have done better than a fourth for hhcd

Actually, what we get in compensatory picks this year (2019 draft) will be zero....and is based on who we signed in 2018 Free agency. So our 2020 compensatory picks will be determined by who we sign and don't resign in early 2019. HaHa would have added a +1 to our column in figuring that out.

The compensatory pick probably would've been higher than a fourth rounder. I didn't think he would re-sign and didn't necessarily want the Pack to give him a huge offer, but it made more sense to keep him for the rest of the season.

Wasn’t a HCD fan but yea, the Packers didn’t improve anything on defense but team morale. Brice is like the 29th ranked SS and we have no ideal who’s moving over to FS. Hopefully they have fixed the pass rush geesh. Brady licking his chops

i’m not either... i’m a bit concerned about the safety position though.
i was going to be anyway. If a play to benefit HaHa was to be made he'd try, if not, i'm not sure he would. Maybe Breeland is ready to go. Not that he's the safety, but we have guys to put on the field this year. let's use them.

I think Pack should've kept him for the rest of the season. What's done is done. I am interested in how Pettine moves the pieces around for the defensive scheme. 4-2-5? 3-2-6? More blitz? More dime package? Single high safety? Quarters?

to the redskins... for what?

They were never going to resign him... so at least getting some draft capital in this upcoming draft.
I figure they probably would have got a 4th round compensatory pick anyway.

Unless they're getting someone back to play safety, this kind of feels like giving up on the season. Not to say that HHCD is the best player on the roster, but if you just replace him with in-house candidates, you're probably getting worse.

Here is my best spin: Haha is the better player right now, that's why he is starting. The backup(s), Whitehead or Jones has caught up and can pass Haha with a little more game experience. Or maybe Tramon is moving over. He hasn't been very good at CB and may need to move.

We never get the 3rd round compensatories. 4th is the best we can hope for. I figure we only move up 12 -16 picks. The year sooner may matter as next season will be a very deep draft.

Just a few years ago he was playing very well and looked to be on the verge of becoming an elite player. Not sure what happened to him.

I can't see anyone else on the roster being as good as Haha at safety. But while they might have gotten a 4th in compensatory pick, that's not quite the same. Because to get that pick, they'd have to let him leave and not sign a corresponding FA of their own. This regime doesn't seem as keen on leaving the FA market alone and collecting a comp pick. The compensation is fair. I just tend to think this signals that the FO doesn't believe in McCarthy and doesn't see this season going anywhere.

I'll add this detail-- over the years, reading beat writers and people that cover the team, I've gotten the hinted impression that Haha is a strange guy. I guess this was possibly a lockerroom move.

Cleaning house by trading discontents: good.
Even thinner at safety which was already one of our biggest weaknesses: bad.

The Packers are a .500 team so far and will probably finish the season around 8-8 or 9-7 if we stay healthy. Missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year may be enough to end the McCarthy era. Might as well prune the dead wood now, I guess.

Seems like a familiar story in Green Bay. Let's wait and see what happens to him in Washington. Since there is already a thread, I will save my "Wit" for that one.

As of now what is ratio of surviving players versus cut/traded among the approximately eight hundred DBs Ted Thompson drafted?

you should at least wait a few weeks until after what this secondary did against the Ram starts to wear off maybe to bring this up again.

Demovsky doesn't know what he's talking about.

They would have received a comp. pick if he left and if they didn't sign a FA of their own to correspond.

If you let five guys leave in FA and sign five others, you're not eligible for a comp. pick.
