In 2020, the Packers fielded a strong roster overall, but obviously not a perfect one. It had definite weaknesses. The biggest, easily, was at DB. Way beyond receiver. King and Sullivan are not full time players for a seriously contending defense.

So they take a corner and people still freak out that it’s not a receiver.
I don't think there is too much if a drop from the 6th WR to the 16th. We should still be able to get a pretty good WR in the 3rd and even the 4th.

Gute really didn't have as many options at 29 given that previous busts with Josh Jones, Josh Jackson, Randall and Rollins made cb a glaring hole in the roster. Stokes was the best cb left and the chances of picking up a good cb at pick 62 is low.

How ironic is it that posters are freaking out because he was supposedly a 2nd round prospect, while the receiver they wanted will end up going... in the 2nd round.

...But...But...But, Packers management didn't take him, AND THAT'S WHY HE'S IN THE 2ND ROUND! ;) :whistling:

moore was available, could have figured a way to move up a bit to get someone better, bottom line is this team sat on its hands again instead figuring out a way to improve the offense just a touch. Always the future the future the future the future, the future is now and it looks ugly without Rodgers. That said, Love could turn out to be the miracle pick.

I am just frustrated with this team never going all in, I am frustrated with Aaron Rodgers believing he should be treated better than 7 time super bowl champion Tom Brady, I am frustrated with pretty much everything this front office does.

Anyway, I will get the sand out of my butt crack in awhile and get over it

Of course we don't know if Gute tried to move up but couldn't find a partner. We can still get one later today. We've had some success getting superior WRs in the second round before. :D

Your missing the fact that they gave a pay rise to a tool of cb and then picked a cb, i for one would be less concerned about this pick had they not gave that idiot King money to come back. I would rather they have gambled at cb then waste money on a bad player and draft a cb in the first round.

Back when they paid King how could they know how the draft would play out? IMO King was insurance and nothing more.

Exactly, folks believing otherwise ignore logic. I sensed it could loosen our options some but nothing more most likely.

Stokes is the CB rooms most raw athlete by a long shot IMO....but is not even the 2nd best out the gate, I do think he may be by years end

The Stokes pick is a position of need and a preemptive move in the event we lose Zaire to FA when his contract is up. I would have preferred the Notre Dame LB but the pick makes sense in the present and future.

I hope Stokes works out but he's a grabber and I could very much see him becoming Ahmad Carol. The pick feels like a reach but let's hope I'm wrong.

The Packers were in need of adding a cornerback and did so in the first round, I'm fine with addressing the position. I don't know anything about Stokes, therefore will wait until I see him play before evaluating the player picked.

We should all be happy as hell that the Packers aren't planning on being over reliant on Kevin King. Honestly isn't even a guarantee he makes the roster. Probably will at his number, but you never know.

It's all but guaranteed King will make the roster in 2021.

It's not a smart way to handle the cap to pay King $5 million as an insurance, especially with extremely limited cap space available.

The Packers won't allow Alexander to leave.

Interesting article.

I was hoping for Tevon Jenkins OT. Thought there is a bigger drop off in tackles than CB. But I do think CB was our biggest need.

There are some interesting metrics in the article and as they say, he was playing against some of the best WRs in college.
Reread the article. Found this bit impressive:

This year, I did decent against DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle. I played my best against some of the best.”

According to Pro Football Focus' premium college stats, over three years when matched up against a horde of first-round picks from Alabama and LSU (Justin Jefferson, Ja'Marr Chase, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Devonta Smith, Henry Ruggs and Jaylen Waddle) Stokes allowed a total of seven catches on 11 targets for two touchdowns. The longest completion against any of those players was 23 yards.

This is over 5 games he allowed 7 receptions by some of the best WRs in college.

I doubt they would lose Jaire. He is a key cog in this defense and whatever the price to re-sign him will be well worth it.

The sucky part about having the "grabber" reputation is the officials will call him closer. He won't get away with the same contact that Jaire or Richard Sherman or any other "name" DB gets away with. Expect several "yeah its a penalty but a cheapie" calls earlier in his career while other DBs can mug and almost tackle the receivers without a flag. Not all the time, just when it helps a future HoF QB get to the SB with a 2nd team.

King was part of the reason, not "the" reason... there were plenty of missed opportunities and mistakes by a lot of players, not to mention the head coach and the DC.
Like the dropped INT by Redmond. Maybe this pick will keep Redmond off the field which is a big plus.

They are pathetic my god
Are you kidding me? You saw how Tampa beat us last year (granted we beat ourselves mostly) was through the air. Buffering our secondary should help in regards to more opportunities at takeaways, plus it hopefully will light a fire in some of the players, and hopefully providing a complimentary piece for Alexander that King was SUPPOSED to be. I'm VERY much happy with this pick.

I wasn't expecting a WR. For me I wanted either a linebacker, an offensive lineman, or a cornerback. I am VERY PLEASED.

He wont get the reputation as a "grabber" until he does it in NFL games. I highly doubt NFL officials are looking at college scouting reports

Eric Stokes Succeeds if... he learns to trust his ample speed to defend receivers with his feet and not his hands, his ability to keep up with route breaks is not inhibited by excessive hip stiffness, and he is willing to be physical enough to do his part in the running game.

Eric Stokes Fails if... he grabs at the top of routes because he can't or won't mirror receiver breaks, his speed is negated by an inability to get himself flipped efficiently, and he plays the run like a track athlete.

Pros:
  • Size/Length
  • Speed/Explosive Acceleration
  • Ball Skills (to locate and defend)
  • Press/Off Versatility
  • Man/Zone Versatility
  • High Level Experience
Cons:
  • Run Defense
  • Grabby/Hesitant @ Top of Route
  • Occasionally Stiff in Transition
A lot is being made of the criticism that he can be grabby at the top of routes. You know who else has that problem? J.C. Horn-- the 8th overall pick. It's an issue with a lot of college corners because they don't have the same illegal contact penalties. He still needs to clean it up, and it's yet to be seen if he will or won't, but it's not a fatal flaw.

I like the pick. He also gets what 4 months of on the job training? Before the regular season games.Maybe he lights a fire under kings ***? Hopefully he plays with 4.2 speed. King has 4.5 and looks like a tortoise out there.

I would have preferred JOK, Tevin Jenkins or Moore but don't hate the pick I like him better then some of the other options.

Not a fan of the pick as a first rounder. Consensus is he likely would have been available for the Pack’s second pick. First pick should have been one of the many better players available who also filled a need. Even better would have been to trade back. Still could have gotten Stokes and more picks.

Pack wasted their first round again. Gute just isn’t very good.
