Sam Shields and Starks have been cut, as we all expected.

Spotrac has us at $43.5 mil in space. We only get around 9 mil from SS getting cut, if he retired we would've gotten the full 12 mil, but still a very nice number to work with to sign someone big

Might want to check on that. I think the number stays the same, $9M whether Sam is cut or retires.

Get both; move up in the draft to secure a pass rushing OLB. If Jones isn't available- and I doubt he will be- Calais Campbell is one good option. One of the CB's talked about here, the draft, several good '2nd tier' options.
There's plenty of options and opportunity to drastically improve this defense, and no excuse not to.

I'm in favor of addressing both cornerback and outside linebacker via free agency but the Packers most likely don't have the cap space to bring in two high priced players.

No, even if Shields had retired the signing bonus he received at the time he signed the contract would have resulted in $3 million of dead money counting against the cap.

I would be fine with the Packers signing high priced free agents this offseason but with cornerback being in most dire need of an upgrade I would prefer the team to spend money there instead of a pass rusher.

But what high quality FAs are likely to be available?

"Cutting Sam Shields would gain the team $9 million in cap room. If Shields were to retire, they would actually get all $12.125 million back on the cap, but Shields has indicated he would like to try to play"

I found this:

"When a player is released (or retires), the team is relieved of having the pay the player’s base salary (P5) and any Roster Bonus that may become due after that, but still will need to account for any Signing or Option Bonus prorations that haven’t yet counted against the Salary Cap."

Think you read:

I tend to believe the first article. I hope I am wrong and the $3.125 M comes back to the Packers, but I don't see it from memory of other contracts.

They could try and get some back, if he retired, but then he'd just unretire and sit on IR in FL again because he can't play, and get 9 million more in such case GB would cut him and he'd not be paying any Signing bonus back or be getting anymore salary

I actually hope I am wrong. That would be stupid if we lose out on 3 mil for no reason.

Yes, and a team can try and recoup that money thru an arbitrator or the player can just pay the prorated back. Calvin Johnson did it, boreland did it, Davis did etc just recently

Actually the league treats a retired player the same way like a released one regarding the salary cap. Here's a link to some information about it:

I highly doubt the Packers would have had any chance of getting back part of Shields' signing bonus as he was injured while playing football and not decided to walk away fully healthy like Borland or Calvin.

Shields received the signing bonus at the time he agreed to the contract back in 2014. The Packers took a risk by prorating it over four years but benefitted from having a lower cap hit early in the deal. Therefore it's fair that the remaining portion of the bonus counts against the team's cap in 2017.

Agree. You always take that risk of prorating the bonus over length of the contract but it is off set by knowing that the later years will actually be mitigated because it will be a lesser percentage of the cap because the cap is rising at about a 6-9% clip every year. The Packers do an execellent job of keeping those signing bonuses at a team friendly percentage of the overall contract which is why I think some of our re-signed guys get more than some here think they should.

Seen a couple big dlinemen that fit what i want. Hopefully clark breaks out and put us over the top.

Jaleel johnson 6'4" 310 with 7.5 sacks and 55 tackles for iowa. Marked round 2-3

Carlos watkins 6'3" 300 10.5 sacks, 50 tackles ranked round 3-4. For clemson.

Vincent taylor. 6'3" 310 7 sacks 51 tackles for ok st. Rd 3-5.

And a nt josh agusta 6'4" 355. Round 4-6. I think he would be a great nt prospect with size and speed.

I like those Iowa guys. Most seem to have good football IQ and good motors. Good teachers on that coaching staff imo.

Of one thing we can be sure...a 6th. straight first round pick on the defensive side. A CB, an OLB, a D-Lineman who can rush the passer. Choose your poison.

Does anybody still think Thompson drafts the best player available? That went out the window a long time ago if it ever existed at all .

I believe TT has always divided the draft pool into various tiers of 1-3 dozen players for the first 300 or so and would pull the player that best fits the teams need from the top tier that was left. If he had a full tier at a certain position is when he might trade down like for Lacy. When someone from a much higher tier was sliding, he'd trade up like Spriggs. I never agreed with BPA except with one caveat. The caveat was he exhausted his higher ranked tiers at his turn no matter the position ala Arodg.

Yes, that number already includes the cap expected to raise to $168 million for next season.

Thompson likes to draft former Hawkeyes as well having selected Abdul Hodge, Bryan Bulaga, Mike Daniels and Micah Hyde from Iowa. TT has only picked more players from one college (UCLA with five).

And that's only because he hasn't read this forum to know that players from the PAC12 literally don't know how to play defense.
