I would think Dorleant or Evans is gone. I think they really liked Hawkins and Brice. I also think they get a RB. I don't think they like Burks but are playing it safe until they sign someone else.

Dorleant is my guess.

I'm still extremely surprised the Packers released Sitton. While there's absolutely no reason to overreact and consider the season lost because of this move fans shouldn't make the mistake of devaluing what he brought to the offensive line. I don't feel confortable with Lane Taylor starting at guard at all.

In addition I'm surprised the team decided to keep only three inside linebackers on the roster. That probably means the coaching staff is determined to use Burnett as a hybrid safety/linebacker.

I expect either Lovato or Goode being brought back before week 1 with one of the players currently being injured put on IR.

Sky isnt falling. Have faith ye of little...

Its been 16 hours, 8 of which was spent sleeping. On a holiday weekend. Trust that Ted is having conversations and going to make some moves. This is after all his favorite time of the year outside of the draft: Time when all that talent is just sitting in a scrap heap wanting a J.O.B.!

I was like, "Wow, Josh is gone! This business has to be mega stressful for all.

This preseason has been amazing...I've never seen everyone, I mean everyone play so well. It is crazy talk to pull 6 UFA's to the 53, and even though another will have to go with Goode being signed, it is still off the charts.

My other big surprise is at ILB, both Barrington and Bradford gone. They had pretty good camps as well. My only guess at 3 ILBS (Martinez, Ryan, Thomas) kept for 2 positions, they must feel Clay can fall back, and they must be thinking about playing Burnett (S) in the new hybrid mode for nickel, or dime situations (similar to the Card's).

Boy, has this game changed... This move, and cutting Sitton goes into my favorite saying, "Chasing CRAZY!"

Once again, I guess that either Janis or Davis will be put on injured reserve to make room for a long snapper.

I agree that the sky is not falling but anyone that thinks the Sitton move makes the Packers better now is fooling themselves. And this is what is so frustrating, yea this always looking to make sure we are contenders every year however as I have mentioned many times, I don't believe the Packers are superbowl contenders, only playoff contenders but apparently the organization and way, way to many fans are happy with making the playoffs and flipping a coin as to whether they win a playoff game or not.

Interesting quotes about Sitton here. It was only a couple opposing team scouts but they don't seem as shocked as us

I pulled out the pertinent section for you:
Last year, Sitton probably didn’t play quite as well as he had. Nonetheless, he was voted to his second straight Pro Bowl and made the All-NFC North team for the seventh straight time.
“I’m somewhat surprised but not totally surprised,” a personnel man for an NFC team said Saturday night. “Yeah, he’s good, not great. You can see signs of slippage.
“Maybe they asked him to re-do something (contractually) and he didn’t do it. I’m guessing that had something to do with it.”
Now Sitton is free to sign with any team.
“At this stage I think something short-term would be appropriate,” an AFC personnel director said. “You just want to be careful about committing years and guarantees. I know what guys are getting paid now but at the age he’s at I think maybe he gets a little bit less than that ($5.9 million).

I still consider the Packers one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

Another reason releasing Sitton is mind-boggling though is that currently the team doesn't have a single backup best suited to play guard.

Well Taylor is a guard that they are paying 2 mil per year. I haven't seen enough to think that much or that less of him.

One thing I noticed last year when I went to a game late in the season was Sitton after the play. He would walk as slow as possible to get wherever he had to get to next after the play. I didn't think he was lazy but that his body was killing him and he was conserving strength and energy after every play.

That has to be a factor also. When Linsley comes back and Tretter can slide to guard, there might not be much difference between Tretter and Sitton now, especially since Tretter has been very good so far.

Tretter isn't suited to play guard.

"If they want as little disruption as possible, they could simply insert Don Barclay or Lane Taylor at Sitton’s spot. But if they feel neither is among their best five linemen, then some flip-flopping will take place. If rookie second-round pick Jason Spriggs fits that description, then they could play Spriggs at right tackle and shift Bryan Bulaga to guard. When Linsley is healthy (he will start the season on the physically unable to perform list because of his recurring hamstring injury), he could return to center and Tretter could shift to guard."

This makes a lot of sense if Spriggs can hold the right tackle spot. Pretty sure Bulaga played at LGand LT in college.

As much as letting Sitton walk was a head scratcher to me, I have to think there is more behind the move then we know at this point. Right now we are all guessing as to why and most of the guesses are plausible and in combinations probably the determining factor. I also don't think you can put this move on TT alone, this smells of a collective decision between coaches, TT and Ball. I doubt we will get a full explanation, but maybe once Sitton signs elsewhere, someone in the Packer organization will give us more details.

Bulaga last played at left guard during the 2007 season. At least I would have liked him to get some practice reps at the position during the offseason in case the Packers plan on moving him.

The possibility Sitton would be released has been on the table for some weeks or months, possibly as far back as Taylor's signing. Spriggs work in preseason was exclusively at LT. I don't think there's any plan other than plugging Taylor, or perhaps Barclay, in Sitton's spot. It will probably be Taylor who was working LG in the preseason.

If there was any shuffling to be done, one would think it would be Lang to the blind side, but we did not see that either.

Tretter moving to OG upon Linsley's return is a distinct possibility. That will depend on the performance of Sitton's replacement and Tretter's performance at C. There's a lot of football to be played in the interim.

That is one of the aspects of this move that is most puzzling to me, was it predetermined that the Packers were going to cut Sitton? Did they try to trade him prior to yesterday? If this plan was in the works for awhile, was the regular season starting OL ever on the field together in preseason?

Tretter lacks the strength necessary to excel as a guard.
I'm not seeing that. Or perhaps more accurately, while he may not "excel" at the position, he could prove adequate.
