Basically what you’re saying is that he played well, had no real help from the top guys, had a bad OL, but you still aren’t very impressed. Are you looking for reasons not to be?
He fumbled and forced some passes. I was at the game and watched him warming up. I wasn't impressed with his deep ball. Some of the passes he threw were off. For example, Funchess had to make an acrobatic catch because of the errant pass. I thought it was an okay performance against the Texans 2nd team. It is a very small sample size. There's a lot of time left for him to develop. I think it is okay for some to not be impressed. There's upside to him sitting and learning yet. I don't think he is ready. I'm not quite as gleeful as you Gary.

In saying that, I feel a lot better about the backup QB position going into this season as opposed to the past. There will be no need to bring in the likes of a Seneca Wallace.

That's kind of what I got right away when it was announced he was returning. I guess the word "demand" just threw me a bit. It sounded to me like both sides have agreed to trade if that's what Rodgers wants while demand seems a little one sided.
Maybe the Packers made a verbal agreement to trade Rodgers after the season if that's what he wants, in order to convince him to play for them this season. That may not be technically binding, but if Gute screws him over on that, things could get really ugly. Or maybe it is on paper.

Gute's only GM a few years, seems like a short amount of time to get Rodgers goat so badly. Unless he had prior run ins with him, or more likely it's the Love pick that's irritating him. Or maybe Rodgers is annoyed with Murphy. Or maybe he sees the administration as one faceless, evil blob.

Yeah, this year would not have been good. Next year is much more feasible. And it sure looks to be headed that way but hey, who knows. But I agree that we (Gute) would not play games.

Tom on any team with a below-average defense probably doesn't win the Superbowl last year.
Very true.
IMO, had Tom Brady had below average Defenses at the level of Rodgers? He’d have 50% or less of his SB appearances.

Don’t get me wrong, Brady is still a great QB, but mainly because he’s got elite instincts and a nose for finishing with a Win. Tom is a good leader and he’s smart and doesn’t make lots of mistakes. He also has good business acumen and didn’t get overly greedy at contract signing and that alone likely put his team in position to make several SB appearances.

Many seasons I have Brady outside the top 4-5 QB’s (top 15% elite type) statistically, so these “elite” arguments are very debatable. Brady has been surrounded by superior weapons on both Offense AND Defense throughout his career. That’s as much a product of the personnel and coaching department also. If you get a few minutes, go back and look at the FA veteran signings at NE during Brady’s tenure. While we went draft n develop, NE became the team to play for, because their team system as whole was like a fine tuned machine.

One only need look at NE to see what it takes.
-An above average QB who’s finest trait is his highly competitive nature and who has a high acumen for reading Defenses.
-A stingy Defense
-A crafty and aware HC who resembles a Field General making in game adjustments. Plus a crew of Solid assistants.
-A ST unit that doesn’t make big mistakes and is considered consistently “good”. (Especially at K)
-A personnel department that can teach a Masters Class at player recognition, player acquisition and player retainment.

Not 1 person in here knows if Jordan is going to be above average, elite, below average or terrible in the long run. So speculation that he is not able to make it to “above average status” is massively presumptuous, almost to looking somewhat foolish in nature (but I get it, as people.. we will do almost anything to protect our pride)
Jordan Love looked fine in his first game with Scrubbs (on both sides). Actually made some nice throws and looked the part overall. Nothing whatsoever looked alarming to me and Jordan kinda reminded me of Favre. He’s definitely not afraid out there, that’s very apparent.
His poise in the pocket was very noticeable. Other than Nijman losing on a block? Love impressed in his debut, especially considering he’s played reps at 1st AND 2nd team QB

Because he's actually better than Favre ... Booyah!!! Ok ok I'm just kidding, but there was some interesting segments the last game both when Larry McCarren interviewed him and when he was out there playing.

One thing Love said was he loved to get the ball out of his hands quickly, and I'm gonna guess he's going to try and avoid sacks yet not be too risky, kind of what I think of as Favre and Rodgers being balanced out. Obviously both QBs earned their hall of famedom, but one certainly goes down in history as attempting too many high risk throws while the other got too risk averse and took too many sacks. If Love finds the middle of that ... Look out!

Yeah. One thing I noticed (that reminded me of young Gunslinger) is I counted 6 throws with no feet on the ground. He jumps throws a lot. However he was largely successful on those throws (I believe 4/6). Plus a 35 yarder jump shot to Funchess over double coverage that may have been tipped?? But it still gave Funchess a realistic chance, while basically making it near impossible for either defender to get anything more than a finger tip. If he does that with Davonte? he probably comes down with it:. and behind the sold out defenders.
He’s definitely got a rifle. He just needs better protection and moderate refining of technique and he’s going to be just fine.
One thing that made him formidable at Utah State was when given time he excels at making his reads count. However, When under duress he forces the ball too much. As with many QB, Much will be determined by his protections. But even more so with Love.. His success throwing is dynamic, meaning he’s either throwing really well, or really poorly depending on protections. IMO, Our starting OL will give him an upper hand against his peers (given adequate playtime).

On which part? You mean the 50% less appearances? Or Rodgers’ “below average defenses”? :whistling:
Lol. I meant the former, and I hadn't considered the latter. But I guess that could apply too.

Part of me wants to say Brady might not have any Super Bowls with Rodgers' defenses, but that's probably too harsh. Brady has come up clutch in the playoffs many times when he's had to.

Ha! Oh yeah. He’d have at least 2 SB.
I propelled momentum on the whole “Brady’s D rankings” thing a few years back, but mistake me not, he’s got a horseshoe up his derrière. Brady also has had the luxury of exceptional coaching and personnel moves on a regular basis.

Here's how I look at it. What if Brady had played for the Packers and Rodgers for the Patriots? I think the Patriots would have an additional Super Bowl or two. The Packers none with Brady at QB.

Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised if he only had one.

Put him on the Packers in place of Rodgers? He might have one or two. Rodgers has let a few opportunities slip away. Brady is arguably the more inspiring leader also (not meaning to open up that can of worms).

Rodgers on the Patriots, with Belichick? I don't even want to guess. Definitely multiples.

There is almost zero argument that Rodgers would have an entire hand filled with SB rings had he started every season in NE going back 20 seasons. Although his injury history might have cost him 1 or 2 SB also etc..
Obviously we don’t get do overs, so much is speculation. But Rodgers having 16-17 top 10 Defenses would’ve been amazing to watch for sure.
I guess you could say similar about Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Russell Wilson etc:.

As much as I’ve called out Rodgers. This is his time to shine and carry his team and it’s our responsibility to help him. Love likely wasn’t going to carry this team his First season, this gives our franchise the best of both scenarios.
Rodgers sorta owes us this one after all the BS this off-season. If he plays anywhere near 2020 level? We will be right back in the mix again this season, even with a mediocre D.

Also I find it interesting that Rodgers is taking a page out of the Brady handbook in bringing Cobb alongside. Gute should double down and go get 1 more stellar Defender before trade deadline. That would be a terrific olive branch and increase our odds substantially. At least get someone in trade before deadline if we are set to make a SB push. That’s a timeframe that’s lest costly both monetarily and draft capital wise.

I've heard Rodgers has been posting Zen Buddhist stuff lately. I wonder if this is something that comes from his fiance? Anyway, Phil Jackson taught that Zen stuff, so I'm hoping it sparks something positive.
GB as an organization let not only Rodgers, but themselves and the fans down, by not putting better defenses behind Rodgers. I have no doubt they tried to their best ability, but they couldn't get it done.

First off, this is supposed to be the Jordon Love thread. Not the "what if Rodgers/Brady" thread. I'm sure several of them exist. While saying that, I can't help but comment on this.

It is really hard to win a Super Bowl. Just ask Lions fans. Having to live through the 80's Packers also should remind fans how lucky we are. I dislike the idea that the FO let Packer fans down somehow. I know you said they tried their best, so how is that letting fans down? I would argue that means they created a franchise that year in and year out has a shot at a Super Bowl. They don't hand out Lombardi trophies just for funnsies. Every team is trying to get there. The draft is not an exact science and they have drafted several defensive players high that just didn't land. That's just how it goes. I totally wish the Packers had more Super Bowls, but I'm also glad to watch an entertaining product on the field almost every season.

Now, I heard on the radio this morning that Love is not playing in tomorrow night's game. Can we get back to discussing that?

Because the game is always evolving. Capers was fine with just doing the same thing he had done for years and not changing his scheme or building it around the talent he had.

In saying that, talent masks a lot of things. I've always said that the players are more important than the coaches. When a coach gets to where they are they know their x's and o's. There is only so much a coach can do with the players they have. As you mentioned, losing Collins was a big deal. Matthews, Raji, Bishop, and even Zombo were in their primes. That 2010 defense was just a great unit all the way around.

Probably a bit of a mixed message here, but a coach needs the players to win while also adapting to the game.
Wait..isnt this the love thread?why discussing 2010 defense?

Wow, that was quick to jump on me. I will try to be a better poster just for you @longtimefan. Back to my room to think about my actions.

I get tired of the Rodgers - Brady discussion and the fantasy of them being on different teams. I also get tired of the "we should have more Super Bowls" discussion. That is the main reason why I wanted to get back onto the point of the thread.

My apologies in the fact that you are the perfect poster @longtimefan

I don't disagree. It's just the sample that I have to go off of. That is all. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him. Hoping he can play in the last preseason game to get another look.
