I remember ILB Trevathon last year saying he was interested in GB but they never contacted him.

Wait, how do you know they didn't? Didn't see any of the folks who use that argument jump the post, so I thought I'd save them the time. :)

I listened to Chris Carter and Greg Jennings on Cowherd the other day and they both talked about how Green Bay is not a top location for free agents. Both said that even Cleveland was better, because of teams like the Cavs and Indians, so other top athletes to hang with, more night life and larger minority population. Jennings stated that you would only go to Green Bay because you were strictly going for the football. This might have some impact on our hardships getting more free agents and a little less on TT being uninterested in that facet. Still doesn't explain the trade front, but we certainly are not privy to how involved he was in that aspect.

Just some food for thought.

Chris Carter who played fro the hated Vikings & Greg Jennings who has been pissed at GB since they let him walk via free agency! Not exactly the 2 guys I'd listen to. Ask Jared Cook how he likes Green Bay, Donald Driver, Charles Woodson. As long as GB has #12 and they are winning FA will come. Bottom line is TT does not go after the big name FA. His view has always been draft & develop, sign your own guys & look at 2-3 tier FA after all the big names & big $$ have been signed.

What frustrates most of us is this is the time to go get a FA or 2 to put us over the top. The window is closing on #12 & on TT's career. Well who knows maybe he will surprise us.

MM said yesterday that the Packers only need a few minor improvements to get back to Super Bowl glory. I imagine TT feels the same way, and is planning on staying til the end of his contract so he can go out on top.

I guess signing one Cook level player constitutes as "using" free agency. :roflmao:

I remember Rapoport reporting the Packers will sign as much as five unrestricted free agents either pne or two offseasons ago. We all know that didn't happen therefore I don't give a damn about this story.

So far TT has the same legacy as Wolf - building a team that's just a fart in the wind.

Front office realizes fans will continue selling out the stadium. They know ticket holders will never give up their seats. No pressure on them at all.

Uhhmmm, hate to burst the bubble but even Charles Woodson admitted in 2008 that the only reason he came to Green Bay was because he didn't have any other options.

Yes, the veteran cornerback came to the Packers of his own free will, signing as a free agent before the 2006 season. But as Woodson divulged on Wednesday, as the Packers prepared to play the New York Giants in the NFC Championship on Sunday, that was only because he didn't have another choice.

Everything Woodson had heard from others around the league gave him a negative opinion of playing -- and living -- in the NFL's smallest market.

I also wonder how long it will take people to realize that Ted's current approach, not spending on decent free agents, has actually never won a Super Bowl; the Packers won a Super Bowl with Charles Woodson (who John Schneider had to convince Thompson to sign) and a decent contract given to Ryan Pickett supplementing the drafted talent. Since then, the free agent "supplements" have been Julius Peppers and a bunch of cast-offs. When the Packers have been best has been when Green Bay spends on free agents to help the team; see Woodson, Pickett and Peppers. Yet, Peppers is the only notable free agent that Green Bay has signed in the last ten years.

Your not bursting my bubble. I know the history of Charles Woodson. He was very apprehensive when he first signed here, but he truly learned to love GB.

"It’s been talked about over and over about when I first went there and the apprehension about going there,” Woodson said. “But, man, just getting there and finally getting entrenched within the Packer community and all the people of Wisconsin, being around the organization and the uniqueness that it has, just had to give it a chance. I’m very fortunate to have gone there and spent seven years there. It was a wonderful experience.”

I hope you weren't talking to me about Ted's approach. I have never been a Ted Thompson fan.

Nope, wasn't talking to you specifically, my apologies since it seemed so. Probably should have posted that portion in a different comment.

I'm not giving you a hard time but I find that frustrating.

Why do these guys go to the NFL? To make money and play football. It seems like everytime a player goes out 'looking for fun' they end up in trouble.

So if you have three job offers in three different parts of the country, you wouldn't consider location in trying to make your decision?

I get TT not wanting to overspend but he is far far from anyone ever accusing him of being a big spender. I respect that he wants to leave the organization with a good future and in a fiscal healthy state. Maybe its a pride thing and he wants to show everyone he can win it all without free agency.

However; the clock is ticking and what have we really developed lately other then a good offensive line? You could say some recievers.

Weve gotten better but were still slow up the middle of the field on defense. Hats off to Guion and Daniels for playing there ***'s off but were usually overmatched there too and those two grit it out.

I belive this to be a very pivotal off-season for TT and the Packers so we dont need "Tight *** Ted" right now. Im gonna sit back and watch and leave it at that but I'm not holding my breath.

Look at Cook's history. He was in TN and then when to St. Louis. Where did that get him? I would think that you would want to go to a winning team. A team where you at least have the possibility of going all the way.

All things being equal, sure. However, playing pro football for cruddy franchises in nice/active areas isn't the same as playing for the Packers in Green Bay. Job satisfaction has to be as big a factor as outside interests.

That may have a different meaning for some players, especially the younger ones, just saying. :coffee:

everybody has different priorities in life. Plenty of players would love to come here, plenty would hate it and couldn't wait to leave town. Very few of them are worth it, or available. One thing I do know, if someone can help this team, at a price that makes sense, they'll be here. If those criteria don't fit, they won't.

I think it has more about managing the team and the cap than pride. Somebody brought up New Orleans before, and I think that would be a great situation to look at deeper. For everyone. Why are they where they are, why, with a great QB and offense have that been largely irrelevant and needing to clear away their best players just to unload salary?

Then couple that with the situation we find GB in this year. Coming off almost a decade of relevancy and a game short again of the super bowl we find ourselves with a fairly high priced player in Sam Shields (yes I think he can be counted as a FA signing of a sizeable contract, but if you don't want to, that's fine the example will still work) But we signed him to a sizable contract and now it looks like he won't contribute any more and has largely been absent from this team for a season and a half. Did it hurt this team? Of course it did. Will it devastate us? I guess it could, but at this point, we have flexibility and options in which to keep ourselves relevant. I trust this staff to keep us that way.

I see all the same people year after year after year saying what we should do, well you know what? New Orleans fate would look good compared to the situations most fans on this thread would have us in. Everyone needs to keep in mind that going "all in" has it's consequences. ala, the Saints. Everyone *****es about Ted and "wasting Rodgers" which i find laughable. You guys undervalue what it takes to win a Super Bowl daily in here. It's almost laughable how little respect some have for the title or what it takes to get there and win it.

First of all I liked the Shields contract. I argued a few years ago that he meant to the Packers what Richard Sherman meant to the Seahawks and poeple laughed at me. I thought he was way undervalued and was a great TT udfa find. Shields is one of my fav Packers and yes there are flexible options.

No.2. please dont compare Drew Brees to Aaron Rodgers. If Rodgers doesnt go on a tear of all tears this group of guys finish 6-10 and are probably gone. Im not even gonna go with a Drew Brees vs Aaron Rodgers comparison. The Saints obviously didnt make a lot of good free agency moves.

No.3 TT and MM are 1-3 in NFC Champ games. In fact if they dont win that nail bitter against the Bears (when they actually had a D) this would be more like talking about the "Buffalo Bills of NFC Champ games"

No.4 I dont come out and post "fire Capers" and "Fire TT" every year. I like draft and develop but in todays game I believe you need to mix it up with some free agency. Doesn't mean you need to break the bank. I did go off on MM after choking away the NFC Champ game against Seattle.

Its frustrating to hear MM say the same "cliches" every year when i am convinced that being more creative rather then "the committment to contract" would of got At Least. And i mean At Least 1 more Super Bowl.
