Packers Hire New Defensive Coordinator: Jeff Hafley, formerly Head Coach, Boston College

In the last five games, the Packers defense has given up a total of 22 points in the second halves of games. That is incredible, and suggests positive things in terms of coaching adjustments, conditioning, and mental fortitude. They're not perfect, they're flawed, but I am ready to see what they can accomplish as they adjust further to a brand new scheme and to new, apparently very capable, coaching.

I agree. Really a best case scenario is holding Houston both times they started at the GB11. Most reasonable would be 2 FG’s were credited to our Offense AT MINIMUM. So I have our D giving up 15 points total. Keep in mind that’s against s Houston Offense averaging 24 points per game so far.

So in effect the Packers D allowed 197 total yards and around 15 points at worst. Could be argued a smidge less (such as 11 points and 177 yards allowed) because 2X we spotted them the ball at the GB11
Before facing GB today, Houston averaged 374 yards and 24 points per contest.

Correct. The D gave up rushing yards but overall held Houston to under 200 yards. Shut down their passing game. And forced plenty of punts in the 2nd half. And they kept Houston out of the end zone on that last drive.

Yeah the offense gifted the Texans 16 points. And considering they started at the GB 11 after Love's first INT, and only allowed 3 pts, well that's damn good. The D won the game yesterday. It won't always be that way, hopefully, but it sure looks like they are playing as a complete unit. Great to see.

It was a command performance by the D. I had to look twice at the game line to make sure Stroud's 86 passing yards was accurate. It was.

Yeah I mean the announcers seemed more focused on Mixon's very good game rather than the horrible stats Stroud was putting up, and the role of GB's D. No matter. Winning a game with three TOs and 16 pts off those TOs is a challenge. The D kept them in it long enough to prevail.

My only concern is the loose play of Love. Yeah he does have to take some risks but can't loft a ball into the middle of the field. Again I'm fine with taking risks and INTs are gonna happen. I get that. Anyway, the problem certainly seems fixable.

We've seen improvement with the defense, and I believe it will continue. As Hafley gets a better feel for his players capabilities, and his players get a better feel for his defense and what he expects and join that with playing in that system as a unit, then we could have something special as the season goes on. The only thing I see stopping it is The x Factor - injuries

I understand that. I think it will be best though if Love just focuses on being Love. I think he self corrects better than Favre and Rodgers (for one thing, he takes responsibility, something Rodgers still won't do). He'll learn not to float any balls around the 50 after this week. He is already very good, he'll learn from his mistakes. But he is willing to take risks, so there will be more INTs than we were used to with Rodgers. I'm ok with that. I'd like to see him win two SBs. Is that too much to ask?

We're actually pretty spoiled, or have been since Bob Harlan and Ron Wolf came to town.

Well this sucks, but not that big of a surprise. It sounds like the Jets are going to be interviewing Hafley for their HC job. If someone hires Hafley away from the Packers, MLF better immediately offer the job to Robert Saleh. Saleh might even be a step up from Hafley IMO.

For that matter Saleh is also to be interviewing with both the Cowboys and the Raiders

If Hafley does move on, which I'm guessing is a 5% chance, if I had any say in the new hire I'd be looking at Al Harris for DC. Former Packer DB, now Asst. Head Coach under McCarthy in Dallas. Current Cowboy DC, Zimmer, may be retiring so Jerry may want to keep Harris, though.
