Sorry. but it was pretty unanimous on this board that signing Bennett was a great move at the time.
I'm sure everyone would have been happy if Ted had resigned Cook, too. We needed a tight end, so it's good that we got one. Bennett's not really here to catch passes, although all the drops are a surprise. No one knew he was planning to retire either. It's a bad break, but I don't really blame Ted for this one. I don't know why we couldn't have resigned Cook though, he did a good job for us. I guess Ted thought he was too expensive.

It's not like TT didn't try to re-sign Cook.

Some of you ***** for the sake of *****ing.

If he does retire, he should return part of the signing bonus.

Not really bothered. He has underperformed and we have depth in that position.

Saves salary cap better used elsewhere.

I am not bothered at all. Don't really trust him to make the catch. Actually, I like Kendricks better. Am concerned about the blocking though.

If this is true that's a load of crap. First sign of adversity and the guy wants to hang em up. Needless to say, my daughter won't be reading any of his books. My wife and I are raising a fighter, not a quitter. I can already see his next book, "When the going got tough, Johnnie got going...". SMH

Based on his lackluster recent play and his disrespect and his entreating other newcomers to boycott our National Anthem. This could be a Godsend.

I did say I didn't blame Ted, and I did say he must have thought Cook was too expensive. So I'm not sure how that's *****ing for the sake of *****ing.

Do we know how much Ted offered Cook? I don't recall Cook simply saying he didn't want to play here anymore, so I'm guessing Ted was outbid.

I would love them to go after Fumagalli. I love watching that kid play!
Was reading through this post and thinking the exact same thing. Now granted, I am a Badger fan, so Fumagalli is someone I am really familiar with and admittedly bias. However, the guy is legit, big body, can block and catches almost anything thrown at him.

Bennett would still be better for this team than Cook.

We have absolutely needed his blocking this year, and that's something Cook would not have delivered on.

Anybody trashing TT for this is just doing it to trash on TT. It was a good signing that pretty much everybody thought was a good signing. He's been a disappointment in the catching game, but has still been good overall. I think some of you have forgotten that blocking matters even though you can't see it on a box score.

I won't pretend to have paid that close attention to every play this year, but from the eye test on the ones I have seen, he hasn't blocked worth a damn this year either.

any year including up to this one, if you put Cook or Bennett in front of me, I'd pick Bennett every time. I had friends from the Eagles, Steelers and Vikings saying basically, "holy ****, the packers signed Bennett". All calls and texts and their sentiment was all the same too, same as mine, that's a great pick up and he was going to be a beast in this offense. all thought it was an upgrade over Cook and they hate the Packers. I remember all of it, because as excited as I was, I wanted my phone to stop buzzing because I was with my dad remodeling a house we were going to sell and under a deadline, but I also wanted to relish in a big FA signing for the Packers :)

i don't think Teddy was outbid, I think Cook over valued himself. I could be way off, but I thought I heard something about him wanting 7-8 million per year and Ted said no and then signed Bennett for less. I dont care if he retires at the end of the year, it was the best decision. Less money for a better player who's been healthy most of his career. in the end, the decision might not work out as the best long term, but then we don't know that as nothing is finished yet. But things happen in football. Bennett over Cook seems like no brainer to me and most others.

Agree. When Bennett was signed, he was considered a much better player than Cook. I was elated with the signing.

I am sure every year around this time, we could all go back to the forum threads and read what people were writing at the time of this signing as well as what we (including myself) were all saying about this FA or that FA. It's fun to use hindsight, makes us all look smart, when in reality, most of us probably would be making a lot of stupid moves.

I make stupid decisions daily, it's how I will end up so smart 150 years from now.

Let's just see what he can do the rest of the way this year. Gonna need him.

I’m actually ok with Mr Butterfingers retiring. Bennett is good for the occasional block but you can’t teach catching. I’m a Richard Rodgers fan and we should have kept Jared Cook. Let him retire and let’s move forward. We have a division to win.

Jared cook has dropped balls too. A week removed from being the savior in Dallas he had a he a drop early in the game that was as good of a pass as you'll ever get.

Let's not act like Cook caught everything and was never injured.

Tomayto, tomahto. Again, I said Ted probably thought he was too expensive.
I remember thinking after Cook made that game winning catch last year against Dallas, "That's going to increase the cost of signing him".

Not really, saying he was outbid is saying Ted put a lowball offer to him and someone paid more to get him. That didn't happen. He was given a good offer, didn't want it, wanted more.

He ended up signing for less in the end, so not really outbid, he over valued himself and what people wanted to pay for him.

So you're saying that we do know the numbers. Where do you find this kind of information? Preferably without paying for some sort of subscription?

No one is more entertaining and engaging on a winning team and no one is a bigger POS on a (soon to be) losing team. Look at his time with the Bears.

I only know what was reported. I googled it and found the reports that confirmed what though I remembered reading. Of course nobody knows what all the numbers are that we're offered. None of that is ever known except for the final contract signed.
