This was a great sign as it fills a hole as Cook was probably going to walk. Rome was not built in a day. This was a step in the right direction.
Cook and the Pack were close to MORE money than Bennett signed for

I think these guys are very similar. Cook is slightly better speed and agility. But I remember Bennett very well with Chicago and he's a better blocker and runs similar stats to Cook. Also, watch how Aaron makes Bennett better. His 10 yard average will be 13YPC+ in GB.
Bennetts #1 complaint with the Bears was Cutlers poor play because he's very competitive with a little attitude.
I promise you had this guy been in GB since 2008 his receiving stats would be markedly better. He played #2 with Dallas. Then played with 2Chin in Chicago for Gods sakes. He's also has experience in the cold which is important.
I like we went with length and size here. this fits with focus on an improved rushing attack. Expect a new, top tier RB for him to compliment.

Who can be mad at this deal, honestly? Bennett was looking for $9 million a year and took a serious pay cut to play with Rodgers. Cook was looking for a ridiculous pay day apparently. This is a very good deal for the Packers and a great sign by TT.

Cook did a nice job for us but he wasn't even relevant until he came to the Packers last year. The only thing Cook has over Bennett is he is a 4.5 guy where Bennett is a 4.6 guy. Bennett is the way more complete football player and bigger and stronger. Plus he plays hurt. He is beast with an attitude and loves to win and compete. Just what the dr. ordered.

Now draft one of these talented prospects in the 3rd or 4th round and let them marinate a year or two. TE's generally take time to come into their own. It's great that they won't have to rely on a rookie.

Getting Bennett was great, but unless TT gets a FA who can seriously plug a hole in this defense, it won't be a good offseason for the Packers. Someone like a Donta Hightower or a corner like Claiborne or both.

I was going to say if we draft Bucky Hodges we get a Martellus Bennett type TE for Rodgers. Then what does TT do today, he goes and gets Bennett himself. Bravo TT. But still draft Hodges haha!

I'm shocked you have to ask this question being a Guy I'm sure who watches a lot of Packers games. Defense (or the lack thereof) has cost us just about every chance at going to the SB the past several seasons. TT hasn't done anything to improve the defense. People expect us to jump for joy because he lost Cook and had to sign a TT and managed to sign Bennett. So again, we NEED defense.

Didn't read this whole thread, but I would doubt that Bennett drops as many passes as Cook.

Yes, because we need defense.

If TT went out and got Connor Barwin and Davon House to go with Martellus Bennett then I'd be the first to say great job TT.

Everyone agrees we need defense but this thread is about Bennett and what he brings to the team. There are like 10 other threads talking about the need for defense. No one is saying TT has dominated the off season with this move but it is fairly obvious that he improved the te position with this move as Bennett has been more durable, has better hands, is a far superior blocker, better route runner, and is better in the open field than our starter from last year.

I'm critical of Thompson when feeling it's justified as well but have absolutely no idea why any Packers fan is mad at him signing Bennett as he presents an upgrade over Cook and signed a reasonable deal with the team.

Good job, TT!!!

I agree we need to improve on defense. But we will be better next year without any moves. A lot of youth on the roster. Our S, NT, ILB (2), CB (4), all had less than 3 years experience. Plus, this is a deep draft for CB and OLBs. We should be able to get some more talent there.

I highly doubt the Packers defense will be significantly improved with Thompson making any moves in free agency on that side of the ball.

Cook has the most yds/catch of any TE in the league next to Gronk since being in the league and playing with much lesser QBs then Bennett.

FWIW Cook is actually third in yards per catch among active tight ends since entering the league behind Gronk and Vernon Davis.

Still should have signed Gilmore and drafted TJ Watt in the first round.

Do you realize the draft is still 1 1/2 months away???

The dislikes prob are the ones always bashing Ted
Not sure anyone's bagging Ted here. Coming into this offseason it was an absolute necessity to resign Cook...or to sign an equivalent talent. He's done that and thensome.

It's interesting to me that maybe this is an indication that he will make a decent signing on defense. That's my hope.

Im not sure how switching Cook for Bennett is such a big deal. Cook is faster and younger. I doubt Bennett makes the big play against Dallas. Bennett is bigger, a better blocker and has better hands and has been less injury prone. Not long ago everybody was sure TT needed to resign Cook. I like the signing and if Cook wanted more money than Bennett then the deal makes sense. Overall, both Cook and Bennett are each very good tight ends though each has a differect skill set. The team however really didn't get improved very much since the signing is a switch and not an addition of a talented player to replace a mediocre one. This is still the same team that got throttled by the Falcons.

I liked our defense at the start of the season. Through 5 games IIRC we were #1 in run defense. Shields went down, we lost Martinez for a while, and our 2nd year CBs started regressing. They looked impressive as rookies and I have confidence they will get their ship together. It is amazing how a single spot of weakness can really affect the whole team. And still we went to the NFCCG.

I am hoping we resign House and add a CB or two in the draft. I think we will be set.

It's true the Packers run defense led the league after four games but in hindsight that doesn't look that impressive anymore after realizing they played offenses that finished the season 22nd, 29th, 30th and 32nd in rushing yards over that period.

While Randall and Rollins looked serviceable as rookies they weren't impressive by any means. As I've mentioned repeatedly it would be extremely risky to only rely on both if them bouncing back and adding House who doesn't fit the team's need of a #1 cornerback.
