Another way TT could get James Jones back in GB is by trading a player(s) for him that otherwise would be cut and subsequently be picked up on waivers by other teams before landing on our practice squad. This would be beneficial to both teams, especially if the Giants get healthy at an already deep WR corp. and were planning on cutting Jones. Ultimately the only cost to GB to get Jones then is a roster spot (probably Myles White). Sorry Myles White fans, I will take Jones over White any day, especially given the current situation and our youth at the position.

I'd really like to hear those scouting reports on the Packers young WRs.

why would the a team deep at WR trade a WR for a WR? I know jones doesn't have age on his side, but I don't thing White has upside on his side either. I think he is what he is and that's someone that could be serviceable at a 5th or 6th position at WR

I don't think pokerbrat was suggesting to trade Myles White for James Jones but that White wouldn't make the roster because of it.

What Captain said :coffee:

Third year for Myles White and he really hasn't done a whole lot to impress me. If Jordy was healthy...White doesn't make the team anyway (isn't eligible for PS I believe). So if we get Jones, probably no room to keep White.

Giants were hoping to start Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Odell Beckham Jr. at WR and Jones was brought in as insurance due to some minor injuries. If these 3 are healthy Jones becomes expendable. Giants are looking to add depth to their secondary and the Packers have a few players that probably won't make the 53 or slide to the PS 10......so a trade for Jones might be a win win for both teams....IMO

and I agree, I don't think White makes the team either with a healthy Jordy. Even with him hurt, I'm not completely sold he's making it either

Barring bringing in another WR from another team or another player behind White playing well, White is the logical #5 at this point. He also becomes #4 with another injury.

If we're trading a player from our secondary that they may want that won't make our 53 who are you suggesting cause I don't see it? Goodson? Cause our safeties kinda suck after Richardson and I'm damn sure not trading Gunter for JJ at this point.

The BIG loss from not having Jordy is the deep threat. Jones while he may help in other areas slightly doesn't provide that deep threat and we have guys already that can be just as effective in alot of the areas JJ provides help while also gaining experience and timing with ARod.

So many people were expecting big things from Adams this year. If he can up his production to say 70 catches for like 1050+ yards and like 6-7 TDs and Cobb ups his to say 94 for like 1150, (neither of which is a pie in the sky dream imo), then in order to duplicate similar suscess to last year your looking at a combination of an improvement from Lacy out of the backfield, a improvement from R.Rodgers and the addition of Montgomery making up for the hole Adams leaves in the #3 spot by moving up.

From a raw numbers perceptive it honestly won't be that much different if Montgomery continues doing what he has been all camp. Losing the Jordy deep threat hurts yes and it will I'm other ways yes but you adjust as an NFL team with an MVP QB. We won't see as much quick strike out of the Pack this year but I still see little reason they won't just march up and down the field on most teams.

And before I hear the "yeah but strong defenses will expose a lack of a deep threat" argument I'll just say I'm sure that team will have an injury or two for us to exploit as well. Whichever team adjusts better wins. This is the NFL

as of right now, maybe, but I don't see him beating out other positions either for roster spots, let alone his one, other than thru attrition. Guys like that are replaced all the time. I could see giving Pinkton more opportunities, IF Abbrederis were to make it back, I don't think it would take much to outplay white at this point and I'm sure they'll be looking from outside to bring in.

I think we have a lot of young DB's worth hanging on to over White. If our draft pick or Perrillo respond with more production these last 2 games at TE, I could see keeping 1 or both at the expense of White's position. I think we could clean house at ILB, hardly any seem worthy of a roster spot at this point. Nobody has done anything to separate themselves but LB's are important and injury is inevitable s i'm guessing we hang on to a few regardless of production.

I think Gunter has passed Goodson and Glover-Wright on the depth chart and I would never suggest letting Gunter go, love the guy. There won't be room for both Goodson and GW, if either. As well as Sebetic (former Giant) and Ryan White.

Bottom line, if we want Jones (I obviously do) we are going to have to trade a player or a draft choice for him, since letting him get to waivers (if Giants cut him) will not guarantee him becoming a Packer. So if I am the GM, tweaking the final roster for a Super Bowl run, I grab the veteran Jones at a reasonable cost and give my QB another weapon he is familiar with as well as add veteran depth to a now inexperienced group.

References: 3 veteran names and their importance to a Super Bowl Team: Don Beebe, Andre Rison and Keith Jackson.

I'm not nervous about our WR situation at all. However, I'd be very open to bringing Jones back just for the fact that he knows our system and Rodgers knows him.

if I were the Giants and wanted to trade Jones, I'd probably prefer a draft pick since they can wait for players the Packers will waive.

Yep, if we trade for Jones, its going to have to be for a draft pick. Either a 6th or a 7th.

Remember though, picking a player up off of waivers isn't as simple as saying "We want this guy and that guy" and he is yours. If you want him and another team wants him as well, you have to revert back to waiver priority to determine who gets him.

True, but also remember there will be a lot of players waived so other teams won't be focused exclusively at Packers waivees (<- made up word :D). And there may be a WR waived the Packers would be interested in, but of course he wouldn't be as familiar with the offense as Jones.

While it would be nice to have James Jones back I'm not real sure he helps replace Nelson. Jones is a completely different kind of receiver. If anything, Jones and Cobb would seem more comparable (with Jones being bigger but Cobb being much more explosive). If the Packers were going to try and trade for anyone it would be for a guy like Charles Johnson (obviously not him specifically but a similar player to what the Vikings though they were getting when they got Johnson).

After reading through a lot of different good and not so good ideas posted here (including mine) about a season without Jordy, specifically bringing back Jones, IMO it will be better to stick with what we've got. I don't think Janis is a starter yet, but he's the closest thing we've got - in terms of height and speed - to play outside. There are two preseason games left so let Janis start with Rodgers and the first team. Get the guy some reps real time and let him work on 1) chemistry with Rodgers, 2) route running, and 3) catching. Although I don't think he has that much work to do on catching. Yes Jones knows the offense but he's older, and never played as fast as Nelson anyway. And please stop giving Janis punt return reps. That's gonna be Hyde and maybe Montgomery anyway.

As for White, I just don't see it I guess. Maybe I'm missing something but I have a hard time seeing him on the 53. Then again, if someone else on the depth chart can't outplay him in pre-season, White will be on the roster almost by default as the #5 - assuming the 1 to 4 order is Cobb, Adams, Montgomery, Janis.

And Cobb on the outside doesn't add up. First of all he's much more effective from the slot or even the backfield. And second, he doesn't have the height for outside receiver in today's game. Well, at least not enough height to play him there consistently. Although he could be very dangerous on end around plays. I don't expect Janis to be the next coming of Jordy, but give him a real chance now, before the games count.

If the WR top 4 are Cobb, Adams, Montomery, Janis - who is the best choice for #5? I just don't see White there, but I haven't been paying attention to who is behind White. Is there anyone there who could outplay White over the next two weeks?

Finally, what other teams are WR rich, where a waiver pick up is a possibility? I'm not on the Jones bandwagon - not even sure there is a bandwagon!

Unfortunately the mental part is the most important thing to gain Rodgers trust. I wonder why anyone would think Janis is better than Jones after the former Packer had a career-high 73 receptions last year while Janis played a total of 16 snaps.

If Jones still has it why would Oakland and the Packers let him go.

I don´t think the Packers offensive weapons are insufficient either. On the other hand I´m convinced that it will be way tougher to lead the league in scoring once again without Nelson.
Nelson seemed to make a big play just about every other game last year - meaning he took a relatively short pass and with a juke, turned it into a long touchdown. (I still recall the drop against Buffalo that would have turned a L to a W. Most of the time, he scored on those plays.) Maybe Adams can do that - it just seemed to be a knack Nelson had, and that's why so many say he plays a lot faster then his 40 time. So yeah they won't be scoring as many points - and that's going to result in tighter games. Hopefully the D continues the great play from the latter part of last season. We're not going to simply outscore as many teams as last year. It is what it is I suppose. The Peppers acquisition just looks better and better. I thin GB will be fine - the road to the SB just a little harder w/o Jordy.

Anyone who would take Janis over Jones right now, were he available, is nuts. And you seem to be one of the few here who understand what a receiver has to do to get ARod's attention. ARod hates to throw pics. So he has to be sure that a) a receiver will be where he's supposed to be and b) have very sure hands. Balls that bounce off a players hands or chest or anywhere else and pop up become easy pickins for a dback smart enough to stay around the ball. For a guy that throws single-digit pics over the course of a season, trust in the receiver is huge. You mentioned that Rodgers hasn't even looked at Janis yet. Now is the time to test it and Janis has to come through. I just don't know if it's even fair to expect that of him. But football isn't fair and most guys would kill for a chance like this. Let's see if Janis is up for it. He has the most to gain from the loss of Jordy IMO.

I seem to remember J0nes dropping his share of passes, not to mention fumbling.

You prefer to go with what we have and yet you don't see white making the 53. So we either go with 4 wideouts or someone else passes him. IMO Jones steps in at #3 at the very least and maybe even #2 to start the season. Looking at our guys I'd take him over Janis or Montgomery at this point. I just don't see a downside in bringing him in even if it costs a low round draft pick.

If Jones still has it why would Oakland and the Packers let him go.

The Packers let him go because the Raiders offered him more money than they were willing to pay. I'm guessing it wouldn't take anything close to that much to get him back. As for why the Raiders let him go, I don't think anyone really knows. I think it came as a surprise to a lot of people. He was their leading WR in targets and catches (close second in yards) he did have the 3 fumbles and and 5 drops but his drops percentage was below the likes of Gronkowski, Graham, Hilton, Benjamin, oh and some guy named Randall Cobb.

sure it is, according to some guy writing a blog. So, why is it that injuries like this are skewed towards TC and the first couple weeks of games and taper off after the first few weeks of the season? coincidence?

So we get the injuries out of the way in preseason games that don't count for anything in the championship race and maybe ruin the team's season in preseason? Obviously if we're still seeing a spike in injuries early in the season that suggests that preseason games aren't doing a whole lot for conditioning.

Here's what Aaron Rodgers has to say about it: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/24/aaron-rodgers-difficult-to-lose-jordy-nelson-in-a-meaningless-game/

Preseason is about money for the league owners and little about player conditioning or safety.
