If the Packers were shopping Rodgers after 2 MVP seasons there had to be some major internal turmoil going on behind the scenes. I’m not sure what happened between Gute and Rodgers but it was obviously very personal.

Good for Adrian, at least he’s on a great Defense with a solid chance of a deep playoff run.

I would have been okay with the Denver trade once it was known D. Adams wasn't returning. Less of a chance of running it back and you don't sign Rodgers to that huge salary and it makes the Love pick a little more palatable since he plays a year earlier. Old School implies internal turmoil leading to shopping Rodgers. I honestly do not know, but if that is the case why sign him to a multi-year huge contract?

Sounds like a one year $4M deal. Good luck to him, I wouldn't have wanted to see the Packers pay him that for a year. Bank it and play the younger guys.
Did not think the Jets needed secondary help. I guess they do.

Could be. There were some behind the scene rumblings between Favre and Ted Thompson in 2005. Favre pleaded his case to find a way to salvage Mike Wahle or Marco Rivera so he would still have solid guard play on the offensive line. TT was reluctant and then drafted Rodgers. Favre played 3 seasons going forward but by 2008 there was no love lost.

I don't understand why the Packers signed Rodgers to an extension either if there's any truth to them wanting to move on from him last year either. Actually it ended up being only a one-year, $42 million deal though.

I think it's a rare, rare occasion where there isn't a fair amount of discontent between players, star players and coaches and especially front offices. I have seen nothing to convince me it was abnormal other than rumor and conjecture. The reality of both Favre and Rodgers situations, they both were closer to the end than the start. The team had invested in a replacement who's time to shine had come or it was time to let him go and start again, and money.

Just saw @Pkrjones response and I guess that answers it. Was going to jokingly say "Rodgers was feeling lonely." :coffee:

I also think that the Jets feel like they are a legit SB contender and will do whatever they can to put themselves in the best position possible to do that. So signing a guy like Amos for $4M makes sense for them. I think Amos has some good football left in him and we see this quite a bit, a guy goes to another team and his level of play and enthusiasm bumps up.

I believe Denver was a bit wobbly at the knees and ultimately saw the Rodgers trade cost as too high. Imo Denver was trying to back up in negotiations. So both teams mutually went another direction.

Allowing Your franchise QB’s contract to expire is GM suicide. Remember that just because you extend a player doesn’t = keeping them through the contract period.
It’s imperative to keep a Top athlete under contract to own the rights to them. Not so much with a mid tier athlete who you can recoup a Compensatory selection. We were staring at Jordan Love, who was a project QB from go, coupled with a Redshirt Rookie season (Covid). Rodgers made GB pay and pay we did. These are all just hypothesis and I’ll deny I ever said them in court. This post is highly speculative and will possibly delete in 60 minutes!

But they paid him $42 million and recouped less draft capital.
I am one that would have been fine with the Packers trading Rodgers earlier. I think that the writing was on the wall prior to the 2020 season and even more so in 2021, that Rodgers wasn't happy in Green Bay. However, Love wasn't ready, the Packers were still very competitive and they chose not to trade Aaron. As you say, it cost them more money and less draft capital in the end.

I guess that the same thing could be said if the Packers had waited until 2024 to trade Rodgers, more lost cap and maybe worth a 3rd round pick?

Seems people (not just you Schultz) want to complain about "drafting Love, paying Rodgers, trading Rodgers, holding on to Rodgers a year too long and life without Rodgers." The beauty of hindsight, in 5 or so years, all of us will probably come close to being correct on "what the Packers SHOULD have done."

My point is (I think) if there was any possibility at all (FO-AR tension) that they were going to trade Rodgers 1 year into the contract they should have traded him prior to the re-signing. I predicate this as after it was clear Adams was leaving. My timeline may be off, but I believe the trade rumors continued after DA signed with the Raiders. If not, my point is (mute). TIC.

Adams was traded to the Raiders on 3/17/22, almost 6 weeks before the draft. The AR to Broncos chaos was on the day of Round 1 (April 28). If it was close, IMHO, Gute should've pulled the trigger on trading AR to Denver by throwing in a '23 5th or 6th rounder IF Denver was waffling. With Adams gone there wasn't much sense in "running it back for another year" as the SB window was slammed shut with the Adams trade.

Management/Govt have a tendency to think that throwing money at a problem will clear it up or make it go away. Probably thought that if Rodgers had an extension (commitment) he could finally put whatever bitterness to the side and just focus to the on the field stuff. Guess not.

Amen. We have the benefit of history on that one. Favre was so pissed he purposely went to play for our arch rival. Emotions run hard and run contagious. In some ways our 2 HOF QB were very much alike. I’m not sure why it seems so surprising that there are rifts between GM’s and Star players (obviously not saying you here you obviously get it)

He doesn’t go from wanting a GM fired to signing a league high contract to ignoring phone calls without some serious character defects. That’s some weird stuff right there. Larry the Cable Guy material

Not necessarily, it could have been logic. Those two seasons were our best shot at a Super Bowl, we were the #1 seed both years, and under the new system, the only team with a bye. If we couldn't get it done at that point, with the cap tightening up, it just wasn't going to happen. Made sense to deal Rodgers when you could get prime value for him (if you were so inclined).

That said, Rodgers has a way of peeving people, plus he was insulted by what Gute did, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if there was a lot of tension between them. I just don't really care, and it shouldn't affect how they do business.

I'm quite sure there was a ton of discontent between Gutekunst and Rodgers. With that being said I believe that Rodgers being due $60 million to play this season was the main reason he was traded.

It's not particularly smart to have a player count $40 million against the cap while not being on the roster anymore either.

I see what you mean there. There’s lots of factors so I can see that.
I also agree it shouldn’t affect it, but this is Aaron Rodgers we’re talking about and he’s a ‘complicated fella’ to use someone else’s experiences. I just think Aaron was tough to work with and once he lobbied to get our GM fired? he pretty much set the course for sailing away on himself.

Ask yourself something. If a subordinate that was well respected tried to get you fired.. would you support them going forward? I’d say that Employee could be harmful to the company if you are Running the show as position of GM (key Executive). If you are a Colonel, would you let a Master Sergeant try to go rogue on you with mutiny?
It’s dangerous to the Brigade and even more dangerous to becoming Brigadier and that doesn’t change if they are one heck of an enlisted soldier.
It's not particularly smart to have a player count $40 million against the cap while not being on the roster anymore either.
That snow ball got rolling before his last contract though. What’s odd is that you project how we should’ve been in “Win Now” mode with Rodgers every other post. Then in this post you say we should NOT have been in “”Win Now” mode? (Not using every financial resource to retain and add players each season) You can’t take both positions. Now either you just innocently slipped up there, or you can’t stand Brian Gutenkunst. It’s another unwarranted attack on him.

Let’s get this out in the open. What are your thoughts on our GM, Brian Gutenkunst? How would you letter grade him?

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but have you heard the reports that Rodgers blocked a trade to the Patriots before he ended up with the Jets? Assuming that is true:

I'm sure he didn't want to face all those comparisons to Tom Brady playing in New England. The fans there would likely boo him loudly when the offense stalled. I also can't imagine him playing for Belichick, seems like those two would be butting heads like crazy. It would be like the irresistable force and the immovable object.

When they faced each other both AR and BB were complimentary. Nothing but respect and praise. But, of course, in an actual working relationship it could have resulted much differently.

Interesting. I hadn’t heard that.

I was thinking similar during that trade. From the angle that I believe Brady would never come out of retirement and join the Jets. The thought crossed my mind that it was a scenario, but no chance that happens. I do think Tom and Aaron have a great deal of mutual respect and once you earn loyalty (think AJ Hawk) then Neither would do anything to make the other one question their integrity or friendship.
