To be more accurate in a history full of inaccuracies, I would say that we should thank George Calhoun just as much as Curly. While we are here, we should also thank the Green Bay Press-Gazette and Frank Peck of the Indian Packing Company. After a street-corner conversation, Peck gave Curly a job at the Indian Packing Company. A short time later the IPC agreed to buy uniforms for the new 11-man football team.
Calhoun deserves as much credit for the start of the team as Curly. He was likely at the first meeting (there is no record of whom was and wasn't there) and more importantly was the driving force behind the enthusiasm and continued support by the Press-Gazette that built the buzz and sustained the financial viability of the Packers.
Calhoun and Lambeau should really be thought of as the mom and dad of the Packers (or "My Two Dads" if you remember the 1980s sitcom) with Frank Peck as the seed donor.
