Good for him, honestly. Hindsight is 20/20 and letting him go was the right move at the time.

In other interception news, we jumped from 20th in the league in interceptions to tied for 7th after the game yesterday.

No, I dont regret the move. I was just mentioning it with a little salt for the wound. lol
Hayward impressed as a rookie, but really stunk it up after that IMO. Had he not messed up his hammy, he may be our #1 instead of Chargers. But none of that matters now.

I think we let Sheilds go, and put that money into keeping Haha and Burnett.

House, Williams and Hayward in successive seasons. Ruined our secondary. Nothing in the players, but on stripping a position reeks of bad management. Whoever thought we can play rookies without any settling in or transition period?

Normally I would say let burnett go but that dude has been playing lights out this season, he seems bigger and hes hitting harder.

I think the secondary is doing great. You consider the injuries being the reason for the mid-season lull. Now that Hyde, Randall, Rollins are back and we are beating teams up. This secondary has great potential with a core of proven tallent. Sheilds isnt included in this equasion. He hasnt played. Makes too much, and will surely be cut or traded because of concussions.

When healthy Hayward mostly played on a high level in the slot for the Packers. He struggled on the perimeter though and therefore it was the right move to not match the Chargers offer this offseason.

The Packers wouldn´t have been able to afford re-signing House, Williams and Hayward over the past two seasons. BTW Josh Hawkins (8 snaps) is the only rookie the team has played this season at cornerback this season.

Funny how our defense it looking better now that we have Randall and Rollins back. I would venture to say that they still aren't playing at 100% yet either. INTs against the Seahawks sure helped out their confidence though.

How quickly we forget the cap bind we were in heading into 2016 with many quality players that we wanted to retain.

I think the rookies earned it. Randall, Rollins, and Gunter all impressed. Otherwise I don't think we would have made the moves we did.

I'm guessing the list will be House, Williams, Hayward, Sheilds, in about 7 or 8 months from now. With a couple more rookies added to the mix.
And that's assuming we find room in the budget for Hyde. Which I'm not certain is in the plans. Unless he plays for 2-3mil, sucessful journeyman tweener salary.

The Packers let Williams and House walk away in free agency before drafting Randall and Rollins as well as signing Gunter.

Who knows what Hayward's agent was thinking. Personally, I think many young players don't have long term vision and their agents are not very wise.
IMO, I would take a small annual salary adjustment to stay with a contender and I would negotiate the contract length and guaranteed $ to fit within the Packers budget.
I believe Hayward and the Packers would have benefited from a mid 4 Mil annual contract over 4+ years in length in the long term. That's chump change for an above average veteran slot Corner and an we know now in hindsight that is a steal and a half for one of the best Corners in the league.

I have the impression the Packers didn't even try to re-sign Hayward last offseason.

Do we even know that the Packers offered him a contract? I can see why they wouldn't with Shields, Randall and Rollins and the need to spend money elsewhere. I also see Haywards side for leaving, even if the Packers made an offer, he had a better chance at seeing more snaps in San Diego at what was probably a lot more pay.

While by no means a Pro Bowler, Gunter has been worth every penny of his 3 year $1.58 M contract. His slow and steady improvement is what makes draft (UDFA in his case) and develop actually work. Maybe toss out the Dallas game in that critique ;)

More specific, of letting the INT leader Hayward go... And also future moves I mentioned earlier of most likely letting Sheilds, and possibly Hyde go next year to continue the trend...

The NFL is a strange business. You see coaches and head office guys getting emotional on those Training Camp shows. Then you see teams cut veterans without even telling them, like calling off your wedding via text message. The Vikings didn't even talk to Antoine Winfield before cutting him. TT outright released Woodson without even talking about a reduced contract.

Sometimes I think that there is just more behind the scene. Maybe the coaches or the GM decide that they don't want a player back no matter what the price, due to attitude or off-the-field issues that are either publicly known or otherwise. I don't mind how our defensive backfield has been handled. You have to make several roster risks every season to make it all work, and hope that you made the right ones. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. That's part of the overall game of professional football.

House wanted big money. His body of work with us didn't warrant the pay day. The Chargers took a risk, and they won. We had two promising rookies that played well last season. The Packers also took a risk, and the less-costly one that allows for other players to stay. No problem with that from my POV.
