The one catagory they haven't been "above average" in since 2010 is pts. allowed/game. Which to me ultimately is the one stat that holds a lot of weight in determining how good your defense is.

Average to below average is probably not going to win you many Super Bowls though. Which is my point. People keep talking about this team as a "failure" because they have won 1 SB with AR in 2010, the year the Defense was top 10. How many times do we take a run at the SB and watch an average or below average defense cost us that goal?

Technically the defense was above average in points allowed in 2013 (11th) and '15 (12th).

I don't think that they were "very good" but they were 15th in yards and, more importantly, 12th in points. Addittionally, their 16 INT's was good for 9th and their 43 sacks was tied for 7th. So they were above average in a lot of categories.

Hey, stop bringing up good points! This is a Fire Capers discussion...he's the main reason the Packers haven't won three Super Bowls in the past ten years (granted, he's the reason the Packers won one Super Bowl in the last three seasons).

Technically, schmeclically....the point is that Capers is terrible, his defenses have always been terrible and they will always BE terrible. Thompson spent first round picks on guys like Perry and Jones and Capers has wasted their enormous talent; nevermind that Perry said he wanted to play in a 4-3 as a DE prior to the draft and Thompson drafted him as an OLB anyway.

Technically, 11th and 12th is above average yes, but is that "very good" and will that be good enough to beat the better teams in the playoffs?

Captain, not sure if you can find this stat, but how do Capers defenses fare through the years when playing against a top 10 offense? I heard something on the radio about it the other day, but was driving and couldn't write it down. Thought I remember hearing that on average they have given up over 35 points against top 10 offenses. That is a number that is really hard to consistently ask your offense to overcome, especially in the playoffs when that other team probably has a decent defense as well.

I agree that a lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball is the main reason for the unit struggling over the past few seasons. At some point it might be worth a shot to try another defensive coordinator though.

I would refer to it more as a lack of available talent, not lack of roster talent

Once again, Shields was the only defensive starter to end the season on injured reserve. With him most likely being done the available talent at Atlanta was the same as the roster talent going forward.

if I was basing my comment on the number of players on IR or inactive, maybe you'd have a point. Just the last game, Brice lost on the first play. Think that impacted our plans going in? Considering he's been an increasing player, and moving Burnett down or using him in man coverages. Think that had an affect on that game? I don't think they intended on playing Rollins hardly at all considering he'd just been out how many weeks with concussion? 2-3? How about Hyde? Think losing him early in 2nd quarter changed things? How about losing Ryan in the 3rd? Change anything? none on IR, so obviously they were all 100% available too right? Or Perry with a Club? no problemo

I don't consider Brice being injured on the opening kickoff to have been a decisive factor in the NFCCG. The game was already out of reach once the others got hurt.

This thread can be closed now. MM said during today's press conference that "Dom Capers is an OUTSTANDING football coach." He will NEVER be fired.

I do, we had been putting 3 safeties on the field quite a bit. I think they would have again after seeing how ineffective Randall was and having to use Rollins extensively beause Hyde went out. ANd the game was not out of reach. A fumble recovery and an INT, all which we had an opportunity to make, could have put us right back in the game. Assuming our offense was doing what they should have been doing rather than turning the ball over and going 3-4 and out against a mediocre defense.

and if you're going to use the final score to let everyone know how crappy this defense is, then you can certain factor in all the things that happened in the entirety of the game.

and this was just one game. We can do others too if you'd like. I know you like to pull up the IR stats, but fact of the matter is, we were faced with constant and steady flux from half to half and game to game every single week. Especially on defense. we probably would have been better off to IR those guys, at least they could have planned on not being able to count on them.

I'll say I don't really agree with this sentiment that MM said, but I think right now the ball is in Ted Thompson's court to bring in some veteran talent to this defense. He needs to do his job period if this D is going to get fixed.

NOW ... if the talent is upgraded and the production is still the same, then I think Capers will have to be shown the door with or without MM's permission. But until TT does something to fill the holes, it's likely Capers will get the pass whether justified or not.

Ohhhh...so Dom's defense last season should have been a little worse so the Packers would miss the playoffs and that would have been better I guess? My definitions of "very good" are based in season long performance, not one game out of 17 each year.

An average or even 'good' season of performance doesn't count for anything when you fail the final exam year after year. THAT has been the point.

Whatever, I surrender. Thompson assembled the most talented defense in NFL history but injuries to All-Pros like Brice decimated the unit as much that even the great TT wasn't able to come up with a solution anymore.

I fully anticipate we'll blame it on injuries and luck, retain Thompson and Capers both, and be back here again next year scratching our heads dissecting why we gave up another 40 burger in the playoffs.

MM said during today's press conference that he was impressed with all our DBs this season, and he's excited about their future in Green Bay. He also said Joe Whitt the CB coach is doing a great job.

That's simply not true. McCarthy said that injuries slowed Randall and Rollins this season and that both those guys will definitely grow from this experience this year.

if that's what you took home as the message I was trying to convey, then it's best you surrender.

Sweet... no changes to be made. Clearly everything is working as planned. No need to worry. Let's continue a complicated scheme and bring in young players to learn it. Probably shouldn't pick up a veteran corner in free agency either. We're good boys!
