Long time, no see fellas...

So let's get right to it...what's the probability of EW becoming our new GM? And what's the conseus on Gutekunst as a personnel guy? Is he ready to run a franchise or are we jumping the gun there???

Well, if you have a pipeline to the 49ers, they both stink. Seriously though, I think they both could be good, and some of us hope EW will be the GM for US this coming offseason.

I didn't think we had any kind of chance with Wolf. Everything I had read on him prior to this year had said he was defintely next up when Thompson retired. Didn't you guys even block his interview requests last year? But then when I saw he was meeting with us, I was kind of shocked. Wouldn't surprise me if he was just doing his due diligence and is definitely staying in GB. But I just wondered why now are they letting him interview all of a sudden? Is there some friction there those outside the fansbase don't know about?

Wolf looked to be the cherished successor to Ted Thompson. He was given a snappy new title this past year - Ted Thompson's old title. He was also blocked from interviewing with the Lions at the end of last season. Things seemed to be falling into place for him to become our next GM, if not in 2017 then probably sometime the year after. But in a strange turn of events he was granted permission to interview with the 49er's. Personally, I'm trying to understand what that all means. Something has changed and we don't yet know what that could be.

Gutekunst is even more of a mystery. The details of what he does goes largely unseen and unreported to us fans. He seems to be well liked within the organization, though. From a fan's perspective we just don't know what qualities he has that the organization holds in high esteem.

The outcome of the interviews with the 49er's will help to clarify some of the above perhaps. Your guess is as good as mine regarding either of them functioning effectively in the capacity of a GM. Who knows, you may end-up getting both somehow. At any rate, several GMs have fallen-off the Ted Thompson administrative tree and have been grabbed by other teams fairly recently. All are doing rather well for themselves. At this juncture there's no reason to doubt that Wolf and Gutekunst can't be successful, too.

Greenbay has a history on not letting any one person manipulate the franchise. Many strong wills at work under one roof. You think you have leverage against GB??? lol think again!
That's why we "over pay" to keep our guys, as many people complain. Its because those guys went to work. Didn't complain. Didn't get upset during negotiations which last years sometimes I bet. They walk the walk, and prove to be team players... As soon as someone gets an ego on them, they tend to find their way out of town sooner rather than later...

I think Thompson stays through his contract 2018. But Wolf will get more and more say in the draft picks. The transition will be seamless. By the time the actual GM job title changes over, Wolf will already feel like its his team that he built, with no need to have a major overhaul.... Seamless.

There is no chance in hell he is going to SF where the owner is a meddling ******** who is hiring the HC as well as the GM. One I heard he is not allowing the GM to hire the HC I felt 100 percent confident that neither will be going there.

I'm not all that surprised that the Packers blocked Wolf from interviewing with a division rival.

That's true but I was surprised the Packers granted the Niners permission to interview Wolf and Gutekunst.

They couldn't have denied it once the Packers season was over, so unlike last year when they denied Wolf the opportunity to interview with Detroit for their GM job that he was considered a front runner, they must have decided this time it wasn't worth pissing Eliot (and his Dad) off.

It could be an indication of the Packers realizing that if they want Wolf now or in the near future, they better just let him look around and keep him happy knowing his GM job awaits him in GB. Or, it could be mean that TT has told the Packers that he isn't ready to give up the job anytime soon and they have chosen TT over Wolf for now.

Which is an absolute joke. TT has two years left max. We have Aaron Rodgers and one SB!! We have an all time great!! Murphy needs to grow a pair and push him aside...

Since Wolf doesn't have much experience outside of Green Bay, he may have a bit of that Greg Jennings point of view. All he's been told is how good it is to be in Green Bay. He may want to break free of those chains to "see the world." Letting him interview with a spoiled kid owner may allow him to see that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

I'm still of the opinion that he should not be rushing to take on the job. As McGinn pointed out, even Schneider realized that at 39 he wasn't ready to be a director, let alone GM. I would be much happier with Ball and Wolf sharing GM duties. Since the structure of front offices tends to be very fluid I would try to convince Ball to handle the administrative side while Wolf manages the scouting side, learning from each other until one gets lured away to do it all somewhere else.

Well we can't do anything about the past. Murphy can step up now and ensure our saviour Wolf doesn't leave.

That is the part I don't get....how are people convinced that Wolf is our "savior" and what is he saving us from? This isn't Cleveland.

I mean I get, fire TT, Fire MM, fire Capers, etc. and sometimes all of them should be called out and haven't been perfect, but I think people assume firing one of them and replacing them with someone else, guarantees success. Will it?

Personally, I think all 3 of them show signs of brilliance, but from a fan viewpoint, at times each one of them appears to be stubborn and somewhat stuck in their ways. Let's go win a Super Bowl, sit down in the off season and decide what has to be done or what changes need to be taken, to keep the Packers in a place they have been in for quite awhile, one of the top teams in the NFL.

So we get to sit back and wait for the next HOFer?

At least Brett was in another SB, the loss in which a lot of folks blame on Holmgren.
Ted got the team in a spot for 2 more SB..No matter how you view it, it was Ted's hand that helped. We all know what happened..

I'm guessing that Gutekunst is probably more ready to run a franchise than Wolf. He's got 11 years on Wolf so it's likely he's more mature, more respected by peers and has learned things like patience and self-discipline.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, I'm not holding my breath. It would take ALOT to pry Wolf out of your organization. And I honestly don't think Jed York has the testicular fortitude nor the football smarts to land a guy like EW. Hope he proves me wrong...but I doubt it. Good luck to you guys in the playoffs. And if you happend to face the Cowboys, please beat that smug little smirk right off them and their fanbase.

That's a interesting thought. Just wonder why it took so long for him to rise up the ranks while Wolf, who is younger, seemed to be on the fast track from the the word 'go'. Maybe a little nepotism there but makes you wonder if he were that great, why isn't he the one being groomed to replace TT.
