Fiber deprived old guy.
This time of year, as the NFL goes, is painful.
Though I fully agree that cutting him is assanine, I thoroughly disagree that he is our best linebacker. Edge rusher? Sure. Blake Martinez is our best linebacker.
Meh. Blake is servicable but only because we have nothing else.
I think that Martinez is solidly above average. He’s not great, but he’s better than your typical, run of the mill ILB. There’s still room for him to grow too. He’s only entering year 3 and he’s reasonably athletic.
CM3 is still a good player. Although his play has dropped off, he still moves really well out there. I have seen more missed tackles as of late as well. He played so well for us in the past, that fans over criticize his decline. Blake is definitely on the rise and will overtake a declining Clay in the next few years.Blake is better than serviceable, and Matthews is still an impactful player.
Let's not forget the $11+ mil cap hit in addition to the decline. I'm pretty sure the complaints would be far less vocal if he didn't have the 9th OLB cap hit this year.
I'm in full agreement. Besides the guy you picked....don't know much about him. But I would definitely grab a few in the draft like we did with rbs last year...It's time to cut him. He is not an impact defender anymore. The TD pass from Newton to McCaffrey when we got eliminated from the playoffs by Carolina sums up what he is now. All bark no bite. He called out the wrong route, Cam made fun of him pre-snap, then Clay got sonned like a little kid by the left tackle/tripped and fell down. He wasn't a factor on the play and probably confused Josh Jones in the process of trying to be a "leader". I'd like to put Clay's $11 million cap # towards making Aaron happy with his impending mega-extension and go get Harold Landry to be a cheaper, younger, better replacement via the draft. Thoughts?

ME, i have the measurables. I'm explosive, never mind it's only on the toilet these days. I used to run a 4.5something forty 20+ years ago. 225 for 16 reps, also quite a while ago. But I'm still 5'11" 189 just this morning. Add 'em up, I could be something special. Take a chance on me with Clay's cap space. It could pay off. Makes as much sense as cutting him now for space and Trading Perry for a song and still losing more cap space with him gone this year than if he was here. Why do we need Clay's cap space? Who would we sign right now that we need that space for?
We still don't have anybody to replace him, the only rookie who could come in right away and suitability replace him would be Chubb (and I love Landry btw). This just isn't logical. He's got a year left, then we can sign a new contract or just move on.
None of this makes any sense to me.
Don’t paint with such a broad brush I would love to take part in a fire Matthews thread. We really should have 3 threads stickied...just so they don't pop up every now and then with no new content.
1) Clay Matthews should be cut
2) Randall Cobb should be cut
3) Janis should be out #2 WR and #2 CB
That way everyone would be happy.
Gute should maybe cut him and bring him back on a cheap 1 year vet minimum prove it deal, similar to Jordy. As that is what he is actually worth these days aside from selling jerseys and the lame commercials.
Can you explain why he should agree to that? Or what benefit it would be to the Packers? What could they do with the space?
He won’t agree, that’s the point, and will move on to disappoint and underachieve on the next team. Very compelling facts your bring up, so you want me to believe that nobody else is capable of playing olb or “edge” position in the entire ******* nfl so let’s just continue to hold on to him for the sake of keeping him. TT being too incompetent to find a replacement over the last how many years is no longer valid. The lines of “there’s nobody else” and “who else you got” are no longer valid. Wake up there are plenty of guys out there, this team was just too complacent with what they had to make a ******* move. The benefits to the packers would be simple not hanging on to the same guy and expecting different results out of him, let’s face it there is only 1 way for Matthews to return to the “glory days” however they do tests for that stuff....Can you explain why he should agree to that? If it wasn't for you two nuts I wouldn't even know he was talkingYou're dealing with a troll here. Just let him talk to himself.

I am not saying cut Blake or anything. But people overstate his performance last season and it doesn't hurt him that the next guy in line is Jake Ryan.
